Man arrested after allegedly stealing car in Reno, leading officers to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE CALIF. - A 35-year-old California man was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning after he allegedly stole a vehicle in Reno, Nevada.

Raheem Ahmed Hanif, from Rodeo, California, was allegedly inside a 2017 Jeep Renegade when the Lithia Jeep dealer in Reno opened for business on January 31. Hanif then drove the car off the lot when the nighttime barriers were removed according to Officer Michael E. Brown of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in South Lake Tahoe.

Parent involvement and new focus key to WASC accreditation at South Tahoe High

When the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) didn't give South Tahoe High the results on their accreditation they wanted in 2016, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and high school staff set on a path to change those results in 2018.

The high school was given a two-year probationary accreditation instead of the desired six year accreditation and they will be reevaluated this March when a new WASC team returns to South Tahoe High School (STHS).

El Dorado County man sentenced after domestic violence conviction

A Cameron Park man will be spending the rest of his life in prison after he was sentenced this week after being found guilty of crimes including
criminal threats, domestic violence, multiple counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer and special allegation(s) related to the use of a firearm and inflicting great bodily Injury on a peace officer in the line of duty.

Michael Allen Hoffer, 47, was sentenced twice, once for 45 years and 4 months and the other for consecutive 25 years to life.

Sierra-at-Tahoe is holding "Jammin 4 Tash" on Saturday, January 20 to honor the late Natasha "Tash" Sagucka who died from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on November 4, 2017 at the age of 24.

"From the time she was two years old till her last days on this earth she found peace, love and light on the mountains," was stated on Sagucka's obituary. "She thrived from the energy of slashing through the trees and sliding on the rails just perfectly."

Choirs present "A Christmas of Hope, Peace & Joy" holiday concerts

The Tahoe Choir & Lake Tahoe Community College Chorus will present their holiday concert, "A Christmas of Hope, Peace, & Joy" in South Lake Tahoe December 1 and 3, 2017 at St. Theresa Church.

On Friday, December 1, the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, December 3, at at 3:00 p.m.

Tickets may be obtained from choir members, at the LTCC Bookstore, or one hour before each performance at the church. $2 of each ticket to be donated to the Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Fund. Ticket prices are: $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, free for children under 5.

Douglas County man arrested after injured woman wheeled into ER

A Gardnerville man was arrested on charges of Domestic Battery with Substantial Bodily Harm and Eluding a Peace Officer after he allegedly wheeled in a woman with major injuries into the Carson Valley Medical Center on November 19 2017.

Thanks go to local Realtors, out of town owners, and VHR rental agencies, who care mostly about money, not about the peace and tranquility of the local residents. Two new deputies for Douglas County Sheriff's Office

Two military veterans have become the newest deputies for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

During a ceremony on November 6 in front of family and friends, Deputy Kendrick Ta and Deputy Jose Gutierrez were sworn in as peace officers in the State of Nevada.

Sass Talk: VHRs, Martin Hollay and Yes on C

On Tuesday, a majority of city council agreed on a revised VHR (Vacation Home Rental) ordinance. In two weeks we will vote on the first reading of the ordinance and if a majority supports it, on November 7th would be the final vote to adopt the revised regulations and rules. The ordinance would then go into effect 30 days later.

Emily Lauren Torney 7/27/84 - 09/20/17

Emily Lauren Torney was granted her angel wings on September 20, 2017. She was born July 27, 1984 in South Lake Tahoe, CA to Phill and Sue Torney. She graduated from South Tahoe High School in 2002.

She loved the mountains and enjoyed skiing, snowboarding, water sports, and hiking. Growing up, she was involved in most sports, but loved gymnastics and dance. Her smile and infectious laugh could light up an entire room and she left a memorable impression on everyone she met.

Tibetan monk part of The Loft speaker series

The Venerable Geshe Lobsang Tsultrim, a Tibetan Buddhist monk of the Gelug order, will be in South Lake Tahoe as part of The Loft's speaker series on Tuesday, September 26, 2017.

Geshe-la trained in philosophy and sacred art at Gaden Shartse Monastic University in Southern India and for many years toured the world as sand mandala master for the Sacred Arts of Tibet tours. He currently lives in Auburn, Calif.

The evening's schedule includes an optional dinner, meet and greet, and teaching session.

Douglas County rules to keep people safe at Lake Tahoe on 4th of July

As the 4th of July approaches, Sheriff Pierini and members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office are reminding the public about rules the county has surrounding the holiday.

Possession and or discharge of fireworks is unlawful and will not be tolerated. Persons found in violation of the fireworks ordinance face criminal penalties, including a fine of up to $1,000.00 and/or confinement in the county jail for a period of up to six months.

Evan Allan Menchel 1991-2017

Our beautiful, spiritual, creative, loving Evan Allan Menchel has left us to soon on June 20th, 2017.

If you've ever met Evan, you remembered him. His time on this earth was short but glorious. He had a different outlook on life that very few could conceive. He lived for experiences.

His love for humanity was embraceable. His joys were: hiking, skiing, cooking, biking, driving, swimming, cars, motorcycles and crafting.

STHS photographers tops in state-wide contests

South Tahoe High School students were honored for their award winning photography during Tuesday's Lake Tahoe Unified School District board meeting.

Guadalupe Ruiz and Tristan Klasko received recognition for their first-place award winning photographs submitted to the California Streaming Photo Contest sponsored by the California County Offices of Education. They each won a camera, tripod and other gifts. Their award winning photos will be used on a calendar distributed to teachers across the state.

Two new deputies for Douglas County Sheriff's Office

Douglas County Sheriff Ron Pierini recently swore in two new deputies for his department, Grace Strachan and Dominic Lavezzo.

Deputy Grace Strachan grew up in Nevada and, after high school graduation, attended Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. After college she attended Texas Basic Police Academy and was hired as a police officer for Sul Ross University Police Department. Deputy Strachan returned to Nevada and recently employed as a public safety dispatcher for Nevada DPS while she sought a peace officer position.

10:06 p.m. update: The South Lake Tahoe Police Department has released an update on Friday night's stabbing at the Transit Center at the Y.

Originally we were told the suspect was born in 1945, instead, he is a 45-year-old male.

Judi McCallum leaves her El Dorado County post to pursue passions

For the past 26 years, Judi McCallum has been keeping the El Dorado County Supervisors from Lake Tahoe organized, on schedule, and connected to those they serve.

"I have had such a great run as a Supervisor's Assistant at the County of El Dorado Board of Supervisors doing exactly what I love most, helping people," McCallum told South Tahoe Now during her first hour of retirement.

Since 1991 she has worked for four District V Supervisors, with 18 elected Supervisors down the hallway, more than 10 Chief Administrators or Interims, and 1,600 "amazing" county employees.

Man arrested after allegedly assaulting a South Lake Tahoe police officer and stealing his baton

A South Lake Tahoe man is sitting in the El Dorado County jail after being arrested on suspicion of several charges including headbutting a police officer, grabbing his baton and trying to also grab his weapon.

37-year-old Richard David Castello is being held on $192,500 bail for taking an officer's weapon, obstruction of justice and battery on a peace officer.

Maria Barrows-Crist 1952 - 2017

The South Lake Tahoe community has lost someone who touched many lives, especially the over 6,700 young ones she cared for through her day care center, Kindertown.

Maria Rose Barrows-Crist was born January 18, 1952 and died unexpectedly on Sunday, January 22, 2017. She died peacefully in her sleep.

Recently retired, she was busy spending time and traveling with her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends.

South Lake Tahoe vacation rental workshop shows wide range of opinions

The City of South Lake Tahoe's second workshop on vacation home rentals (VHRs) drew about 45 people in person Wednesday, while several others participated from home via the internet. As is every discussion about VHRs in the community, passions ran high and differences were apparent.

Tahoe for Standing Rock holding benefit concert

Lake Tahoe area supporters of those protesting the pipeline in Standing Rock, ND will be holding a benefit concert at the Tahoe Biltmore on the North Shore on Saturday, December 3 starting at 1:00 p.m.

The family friendly event will feature musicians along with members of local Native American tribes. Also on tap is a arts and crafts area with face painting, raffle and silent auction. Tickets are $20 for adults (12 and under are free) and available by clicking HERE.

South Lake Tahoe resident asks City to ban street parking on Regina Road

Noel Farmer, a South Lake Tahoe resident, has been a vocal opponent to Vacation Home Rentals (VHRs) in his Heavenly Valley neighborhood. Farmer is present at City Council and Planning Commission meetings, as well as Zoning Administrator meetings when the topic is VHRs.

During this Tuesday's meeting at the airport, the City Council members will discuss Farmer's petition to ban street parking on the dead-end street where he lives, Regina Road, in the 3600 and 3700 blocks.

Is South Lake Tahoe safer after passage of the Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act?

The current crime and police officer staffing statistics in City of South Lake Tahoe is consistent with the State of California as a whole. Most of the crimes for which the Safe Neighborhood and Schools Act have mandated a reduction in criminal penalties have increased in our city. Also consistent with state-wide statistics is the reduction in numbers of South Lake Tahoe police officers available to address local crime.

Very good question! Just last week we were able to return a dog that had been stolen because it was micro chipped. We located the dog and because we were able to verify the legal owner via the microchip it made getting the dog back to his owner a much easier process.

New phone scam targeting Douglas County residents

Several reports of attempted fraud were reported to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office on Monday, but none of the targeted recipients paid any money to the scammer.

An unknown male called all of the potential victims, claiming to be Lt. Mike Sharp with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Caller IDs identify the phone number as (775) 375-5858, located in Winnemucca, Nevada. They were all told they owe money in regard to a civil case #6120-NV-8901.
