With the assistance of the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and a determined committee, an unnamed peak on the North Shore of the Lake Tahoe Basin has been renamed “Gold Star Peak” in honor of soldiers from the area that paid the ultimate price in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the War on Terrorism. A ceremony to dedicate Gold Star Peak will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 6, 2013, at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe.

In honor of Peace Officer Memorial Week, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department honored officers, dispatch and citizens during its Annual Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 15, 2013.

“We are so proud of the selfless efforts by our police force on a daily basis and it’s nice to have an opportunity to support them in this way” said City of South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tom Davis. “These are all local heroes in our police and fire departments and its good we take the time to honor them.”

A traffic stop in South Lake Tahoe resulted in the arrest of three suspected felons. The driver was armed with a loaded handgun. Shortly after 4pm, on Monday, Feb. 18 South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Travis Cabral conducted a traffic stop in a residential area off of Pioneer Trail after seeing a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road.

Fans of the late Ed Carlson, known as "The Waver" to Northern Nevadans, will pay tribute to his life and the many lives he touched at noon today, New Year's Day, at Reno City Plaza for a short memorial service, according to a news release.

Following the service attendees will then walk one mile south on South Virginia Street while waving to oncoming traffic as The Waver did for some many years before returning to City Plaza.

Dear Tahoe community, we are all mourning the horrible, heart-breaking massacre of young children and educators in Connecticut yesterday. These were the children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews of people who loved those precious little ones as much as we do our own. This is the second mass shooting just this week and gun safety experts report that there have been 31 school shootings in the US since Columbine in 1999.

Two new officers will join the South Lake Tahoe Police Department force. They will be sworn by Chief Brian Uhler in in a brief ceremony 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26. Both are veteran officers of California law enforcement, who have passed through a highly competitive process to be selected for employment at South Lake Tahoe Police Department.

"Acceptance of Transition" by Cathy McClelland, is the selected image featured on the Tahoe Arts and Mountain Culture website collectible sticker #6. Cathy’s depiction of a Tahoe bear standing in an aspen grove of cascading leaves is playfully symbolic of our shared acceptance of this magical season of change with our bears and wildlife. The painting speaks to the healing power of Bear, and the peace that comes from acceptance. Only 1,000 of the collectible stickers are available at local shops.

The staff and golfing guests at Lake Tahoe Golf Course joined together on a community day at the golf course where all course fees collected went to support local non-profits. The Rotary Club of Tahoe Douglas was recently presented a check for $620 as a result of those donations.

Members of the 60 member strong Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club recently completed two kiosks for the public to use in the South Lake Tahoe area. The first one is located at Kahle Community Park and the second one is at the new Van Sickle Bi-State Park. The kiosks are now used to hold information, including maps of trails and topography as well as pictures and events. The club took on the projects as part of the worldwide volunteer work day.

Tahoe Regional Young Professionals inaugural TRYP-Stock will raise funds for Tahoe’s Animal Humane Society, Saturday, August 18 from 1 - 5 p.m. at El Dorado Beach - the new Lakeview Commons. The 60s-themed "Peace, Love & Puppies" party provides locals, visitors and kids of all ages, an afternoon filled with music on the beach, costumes, games, contests, vendors, food and beverages.

With the South Shore swelling by more than 100,000 people, authorities remained busy over the Independence Day holiday with a number of calls on both sides of the state line. South Lake Tahoe Police Department Lt. David Stevenson reports the following:

I am a big believer in balance. Balancing work and play, exercise and relaxation, the to do’s and the to don’ts. Unfortunately, it seems that many times our virtual see-saw gets pretty lopsided and we’re left stranded in the air with toes dangling, or completely weighed down without any way to get on our feet.

A 49-year-old Sacramento kept authorities at bay overnight in an armed standoff at a South Lake Tahoe motel. The following information comes from South Lake Tahoe Police regarding the standoff at the Pine Cone Acre Motel in South Lake Tahoe. No shots were fired.

We all have regrets. Well, most of us anyway. Maybe (just maybe) there is someone out there that has walked on this planet and felt good about all of the choices they made from birth to death (but it is hard to imagine). And I’m quite aware that there are some that make loads of bad choices but don’t know how to take responsibility for them and instead blame others for why their life isn’t working. (This is an issue worthy of later discussion).

For the past few weeks I have started and stopped writing this column. I've had some real inspiration, awoken with “brilliant” ideas in the middle of the night only to sit down, start writing and get absolutely nowhere. My virtual trashcan seemed to be getting full while the ideas seemed empty.

Since as far back as he could remember, Les Lovell wanted to be a law enforcement officer.
The notions of keeping peace and preserving justice were always on his radar and for 30-plus years, the now-retired senior lieutenant for the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office Lake Tahoe Branch fulfilled his commitment.

I want to have fun and live life to the fullest, do it all, see it all! I love to laugh, spend time with family and friends, listen to music, travel, eat, try new things, be challenged, learn, help others, and the list goes on. What is on your list? A few weeks ago, I wrote about the importance of creating a vision plan in order to begin getting what you want out of life. Just ONE thing you’d like to be different. Many people when faced with this task don’t know where to start because they get overwhelmed with thinking about ALL the things they want to change. Suddenly their eyes glaze over, their thoughts race in a thousand different directions, and frustration or helplessness sets in. Making changes just feels too difficult or even impossible to tackle.

So here it is. Valentine’s Day. A day of love and romance for some. A dreaded day of heartache and bitterness for others. Some of you may receive cards, flowers, a phone call from a friend, a nice romantic dinner or even a marriage proposal. Some of you will spend the day alone, avoiding the satin heart mayhem and gooey sentimental couples that inevitably come with the traditions of February 14th.

Barey's eyes widened with wonder as she held the piece of paper in her hand. She struggled to decipher the words on the document but understood its significance — the number, 5,000 Kenyan shillings, would be paid to her to start her own small business baking and selling chapati to support her family.

Justice of the Peace Tom Perkins announced today he will seek election to a full term as Justice of the Peace for East Fork Township. Judge Perkins was appointed in 2010.

Unity at the Lake began as a small study group in Karen Martin's living room and 17 years later is a thriving, diverse and open spiritual community that well over a hundred locals and visitors call their spiritual home. Their spiritual leaders, Stew and Hillary Bittman, are currently in the process of becoming ordained Interfaith Ministers. Unity has published the "Daily Word" since 1924.
