Taylor Creek closure extended by USFS

Due to continued public health and safety concerns, trail construction, risk of bear-human encounters and in order to discourage large groups from gathering, the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has extended a Forest Order that temporarily closes Taylor Creek and the surrounding area. This order (see here) is extended through November 9 at this time.

USFS closes Taylor Creek for one month due to crowd and safety concerns

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The numbers of people who normally visit Taylor Creek for the fall spawning of the Kokanee salmon has prompted forest officials to close the popular area October 2 - November 2, 2020.

Due to continued public health safety concerns related to COVID-19, trail improvement work, the risk of bear-human encounters and in order to discourage large groups from gathering, the area is closed.

Over 8,100 pounds of trash removed from Donner and Tahoe by Clean Up The Lake dive teams

Clean Up the Lake dive teams have removed 8,183 pounds of trash from Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe, most from the summer of 2020.

The team completed a circumnavigation of Donner Lake, covering every inch of eight-mile shoreline at depths up to 25 feet. They removed all they could find in that area, resulting in 5151.5 pounds. They removed 3,032 pounds of trash from the depths of Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe Library hosts virtual author talk with Kathryn Reed

Investigation leads to return of custom bar top to brewery in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Finding a truck with stolen license plates on Tuesday has led to the recovery of a custom made bar top from a South Lake Tahoe brewery.

On June 30, 2020, deputies from El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) got an LPR (License Plate Reader) hit on a truck in Meyers.

The truck was traveling west on US50 and deputies found the truck near Ice House Road and attempted a traffic stop. The driver turned onto a rocky dirt road, stopped by the American River and took off on foot.

Sierra Speaker Series: A Sentimental Journey Along Highway 395

Ronald Gordon Renaldi ~ 1933 - 2019

Ronald Gordon Renaldi, R.Ph., passed away on December 4, 2019 at the age of 86.

Born in Oakland, California on October 26, 1933 to Hazel and Joseph Renaldi. Ron grew up in Oakland, graduating from Saint Elizabeth High School in 1951. He earned a BS from the University of California, Berkeley in 1955.

16th annual Drug Store Project in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Tuesday, April 2, 325 6th graders from South Tahoe Middle School, Zephyr Cove Elementary School and home-schooled youth, will spend the day at Lake Tahoe Community College going through the 16th annual Drug Store Project.

Since 2004, middle school students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have gone through the Drug Store Project (DSP), a day-long comprehensive drug prevention program designed to educate youth about the dangers of substance use and abuse.

Public's help sought in identifying attempted theft suspect

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is asking for the public’s assistance with an attempted theft at the Walmart located in the Topsy Shopping Center on December 23.

At approximately 9:42 a.m. an unidentified man entered the store at 3770 US Highway 395 and selected 23 items, then proceeded to the self-checkout lanes. He scanned ten of the cheapest items, paid for them with cash, then attempted to leave the store when he was stopped by security.

The man fled without his items and left in what looks like a white Acura. He drove off towards the highway.

Karl James Hildinger ~ 5/30/31 - 11/11/18

Karl James Hildinger was born in Danville, California on May 30, 1931. Jim passed away at home, surrounded by family, in South Lake Tahoe on November 11, 2018.

Three weeks after he was born, he was carried into Angora Lakes Resort in a Washoe papoose basket. He was a staunch environmentalist and spent his lifetime protecting and preserving Angora and the greater Lake Tahoe Basin. The Angora Lakes Resort remains in the family.

Credit card stolen from South Lake Tahoe used at multiple stores

Authorities are looking for a man suspected of using a stolen credit card at the Stateline CVS on November 7 and 10, and at the Carson City Home Depot, Target and Walmart on November 11.

The credit card used to shop was from a purse stolen in South Lake Tahoe on November 3.

The manager at the CVS told deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office the male suspect's name is possibly "Rick."

Car used in Carson City armed robbery stolen from South Lake Tahoe

The car used by the man who robbed a Carson City frozen yogurt shop on Monday was stolen in South Lake Tahoe the previous day according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on October 22, an unknown man walked into the Frutilandia yogurt and ice cream shop on Highway 50 East and pointed a handgun at an employee, demanded cash, then fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

The 60th installation of Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Foundation officers combined a patriotic 4th of July theme and America’s signature game, baseball, in a lighthearted ceremony at Harvey’s convention center on June 27, 2018. It began with photographs of the Club’s 1964 fundraising baseball game between Soroptimist and Rotary of South Lake Tahoe, followed by clips from the legendary Abbott and Costello film “Who’s on First.” The tables were decorated with cups of peanuts and Cracker Jacks; the officers to be installed in baseball shirts and hats.

Goin, , Foundation Professor of Art at the University of Nevada, Reno, has been working on the project for 25 years and he is presenting photos from the 19th century through the mid-twentieth century, with the photographer's comparative view of the same location.

New exhibition celebrates 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley

"Revenge Porn" gets man one year in prison

A man was found guilty of violating a domestic violence restraining order by a jury in El Dorado County on November 1, 2017.

Daniel Ramirez Rios, 43, violated a domestic violence restraining order and one count of intentionally distributing the images of the intimate body parts of another person – also known as “revenge porn.” Mr. Rios was remanded into custody after the jury’s verdict was announced.

South Tahoe High student photography on display at City Hall

Award winning photography by South Tahoe High School (STHS) students is now on display at the Lake Tahoe Airport's art gallery.

Some of the photographers were on hand a reception hosted by the City of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Arts Alliance on Monday, the second since the gallery was opened in June of this year. Work of local artists will hang on the walls at the entrance of City Hall at the airport throughout the year and will be rotated quarterly.

STHS photographers tops in state-wide contests

South Tahoe High School students were honored for their award winning photography during Tuesday's Lake Tahoe Unified School District board meeting.

Guadalupe Ruiz and Tristan Klasko received recognition for their first-place award winning photographs submitted to the California Streaming Photo Contest sponsored by the California County Offices of Education. They each won a camera, tripod and other gifts. Their award winning photos will be used on a calendar distributed to teachers across the state.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary holds 49th annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration

The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club is holding their 49th annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration at the Harrah's Lake Tahoe Convention Center from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday, March 17.

It started with a wine and cheese party on the second floor of Dart Liquor and it has morphed over the years into one of the top annual fundraisers on the South Shore.

600 people are expected at the evening full of food, fun, dancing and drinking, all in the name of community to raise funds for the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club's scholarships and grant programs.

New South Lake Tahoe Christmas event: Ski Run Holiday Stroll

Douglas County deputies cleared in shooting death of Gardnerville man

All six deputies involved in the July 2015 shooting of Mark Perkins have been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing according to the Douglas County District Attorney, Mark Jackson.

At 2:00 p.m. on July 30, Douglas County Sheriff's deputies responded to the Gardnerville Ranchos after receiving a call saying the 48-year-old Perkins was armed with multiple weapons and had threatened his wife and told her he was going to shoot a police officer and kill a neighbor.

Archives Tour: California State Parks Archives

Digitization your historic materials at free North Lake Tahoe event

This summer, the North Lake Tahoe Historical Society and the University of Nevada, Reno Photography Program will be co-hosting digitization day, a one day event where you can bring your historical Lake Tahoe photographs, postcards, and memorabilia in for professional-quality scanning.

Participants will be given free copies of scans on USB drives, and will have the option to donate a digital copy of materials for inclusion in the NLTHS’s databases, contributing to the visual history of Lake Tahoe.

Eleanor Preger's talk will take place in the Ron and Maureen Ashley Community Gallery at the Holman Arts & Media Center on campus from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Tahoe Big Year in Photos at SLT Library

Local birders, Bob and Jenny Sweatt, spent the entire year of 2015 searching the basin for as many species of birds as they could find through Tahoe Institute for Natural Science's competition entitled "Tahoe Big Year". The Big Year celebrates the hundreds of bird species that make the Tahoe region their home all year-round, during summer or winter, or while passing through to other destinations. The Sweatts documented their award-winning discoveries with amazing photographs.

Dangberg Ranch Shared at the SLT Library

Curator Mark Jensen returns to share more stories from Carson Valley's historic Dangberg Home Ranch. Just down the hill but centuries away, the family and its influence is incredibly interesting, and Jensen will tell some tales using the park's historic artifacts, photographs and documents. Join the Friends of the Library in partnership with the Lake Tahoe Historical Society for a multimedia history lesson. Free and open to all.
