Public comment sought on USFS-Liberty Utilities plan to thin forests around power lines

Liberty Utilities and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) are working together on a proposal to reduce the risk of unwanted wildfires on approximately 6,300 acres of forest in the Lake Tahoe Basin along 55 miles of power line corridors.
The Liberty Utilities Resilience Corridors Project would help create healthier and more resilient forests while reducing the risk of unwanted wildfires that could ignite either from vegetation coming in contact with utility infrastructure or failures of infrastructure.

TRPA: What's new for the 2019 Lake Tahoe boating season

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – New boating safety programs are coming online at Lake Tahoe this summer, according to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA).
Additional enforcement of no-wake zones and excessive boat noise under TRPA’s Shoreline Program are two measures being taken to protect the lake and non-motorized watercraft and swimmers. Boat inspections fees are also being adjusted for the first time in seven years to better safeguard the lake from aquatic invasive species, and sticker fees now include a $12 fee as part of the Shoreline Program.
Spring aging and caregiver series in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Family Caregiver program is offering a six-week series of classes designed to provide instruction and support to caregivers who are or are planning to care for a family member or friend age 60 or older.
It started on April 15 but participants can still join and attend any or all of the remaining sessions. This series is offered twice a year.
Mooring permitting underway in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif – New online permitting options are available for mooring permits at Lake Tahoe. The Lake Tahoe Shoreline Plan approved by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency in 2018 requires lakefront property owners, homeowners’ associations, and marinas to register all existing boat moorings, including buoys, boatlifts, and boat slips.
Daffodil Hill closes for the season after just one weekend

For those waiting for an annual sojourn down State Route 88 to Daffodil Hill, it's time to change your plans. They opened for the season on March 30, not knowing their season would only last two days.
A rainy week has more than dampened spirits, it also damaged the thousands of daffodils lining the four-acre farm owned by the McLaughlin family.

TTD receives award for use of cellular data for Lake Tahoe transit needs

City of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Wellness Cooperative reach settlement

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An agreement has been reached between the City of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Wellness Cooperative (TWC) after over two years of court proceedings between the two.
During the closed session portion of Tuesday's City Council meeting, the four councilmembers allowed to participate voted unanimously to accept the signed agreement between the City and TWC. Councilmember Cody Bass had to recuse himself from voting since he is the owner and president of TWC.

Hosting their second Adopt A Day of Nourishment this year, the Filipino community group sponsored the March 25th Monday Meal and brought their well-honed cooking skills and favorite Filipino cuisine recipes to feed the grateful dinner guests congregating for a communal meal at Grace Hall.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2019, voters will be selecting their new District 1 State Senator, a vacancy created when Ted Gaines won a seat on the state Board of Equalization in November.
District 1 spans California’s northeastern corner from the Oregon border to Lake Tahoe, including some of the Sacramento area’s eastern suburbs. Residents living in Alpine, El Dorado, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, and Siskiyou Counties are in District 1 as well as parts of Placer County (Auburn, Colfax, Lincoln, Loomis, and Rocklin) and Sacramento County (Folsom, Orangevale, and Fair Oaks).
STPUD starts process to raise water and sewer rates

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) will start the process to raise water service rates by up to six percent and sewer rates by up to five percent in order to start replacing aging pipes and providing improved fire flow throughout their service area. If fully implemented, this increase would fuel an $81.5M capital improvement program for sewer improvements, and $70M for water system improvements, especially fire flow projects.

On March 14th, the City of South Lake Tahoe held a public meeting to discuss the already approved plan to re-route Hwy 50 through a bunch of small businesses and a whole neighborhood, around the backside of Harrah’s where half of the existing Loop Road now sits. This plan was concocted by the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) with little input from the community and the near absence of participation by our former City Leaders.

Land at the Y in South Lake Tahoe to be purchased for affordable housing project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A vacant one-half acre lot on Emerald Bay Road at the "Y" in South Lake Tahoe will soon become an “affordable by design” housing project and could be the site of tiny houses. At Thursday's California Tahoe Conservancy meeting they announced their intent to sell one of its developable properties to Dinsmore Sierra who will finance and build the project which is across the street from Alpina Cafe.

South Tahoe High School endured the beginning of Spring weather as the snow stopped falling and temperatures rose to 45F, giving students hope of warmer weather for the next following weeks. This week at STHS students prepared for upcoming school events, Julia Russell discussed Challenge Day, and Sofia Hedqvist signed to a college to continue her volleyball career in North Dakota.

South Lake Tahoe police station to undergo small portion of needed renovations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A full list of needed renovations at the South Lake Tahoe police station would cost a few million dollars, but until a more comprehensive capital planning process is completed the Council voted to give them $225,000 to get started on the most immediate needs.

Yes, there was a fire that damaged our building but not “the church” (our congregation). We are currently meeting for worship at Temple Bat Yam on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. Our church continues to thrive, thanks in a large part to the outpouring of love, concern, and support from you, the community of South Lake Tahoe.

The art reception will include a meet and greet with displayed artists and city officials. All are welcome to attend. The event is free of charge.

State Route 89 recreation plan to address traffic, experiences and parking

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Giving people a positive experience as they travel along the west shore of Lake Tahoe will require removing congestion from the roadway is one of the goals of the State Route 89 Recreation Corridor Management Plan.
A collaboration of 17 agencies and organizations have been working on the plan which covers the stretch from 15th street in South Lake Tahoe to the Placer County line at Sugar Pine Point State Park. Along the plan area are popular areas to view scenery, hike, bike and visit beaches along a 12 mile stretch of undeveloped shoreline.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been over three decades in the making. The US50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project, also known as the Loop Road, is getting closer to becoming a final plan and its implementation.

John Thiel: New man at the helm of South Tahoe Public Utility District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After Richard Solbrig told the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Board of Directors he was retiring in January 2019 after 29 years with the agency the hunt was on for a new general manager.
It turned out they didn't have to look far.
John Thiel had been hired by Solbrig in 1992 as a staff engineer and he worked his way up through the ranks over the last 27 years until the Board chose him as the new general manager.
Novasel honored by Assemblyman as 2019 Woman of the Year

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - County Supervisor Sue Novasel was honored by Assemblyman Frank Bigelow as the 5th District's Woman of the Year during a special ceremony on Monday during a Floor Session in Sacramento.
Each year, the California Women’s Legislative Caucus sponsors and hosts its Woman of the Year event to honor women from around the state for all they do in their communities.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College held a 90th birthday celebration this week for their first president, Dr. James Duke.
Dozens of past and current leaders, staff, students and community members enjoyed the party for Dr. Duke who started with the college on September, 1974 when a key to a post office box was all there was.

Mt Rose Ski Tahoe, Donner Ski Ranch are Closed. Diamond Peak is Closed due to Power Outage… Call Ahead … Road Controls posted on All Highways in and around Lake Tahoe with I-80, Hwy 88, Mt. Rose Hwy & Emerald Bay Road CLOSED… Back Country Avalanche Danger is HIGH… Ski & Ride with Care & Be Safe!
Waze responds to El Dorado County about South Lake Tahoe westbound traffic issues

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Traffic is nothing new in South Lake Tahoe and Meyers, but Sunday traffic leaving Lake Tahoe has become worse once tech-savvy drivers learned how to navigate side roads. Residents cannot leave their homes for fear they won't be able to get back for hours, and drivers trying to make it back to Sacramento and the Bay Area get frustrated with standstill hours-long lines.

We are stronger at Lake Tahoe when we work together. Everyone benefits when people of different interests, backgrounds, and perspectives agree to bring their ideas, energy, and creativity to the table to shape solutions for a healthier, more vibrant, and sustainable Lake Tahoe.
Working together can be hard, of course. But we’ve built a spirit of collaboration at Lake Tahoe and it’s growing. Through it we are achieving things that once seemed impossible, things that we could never achieve working on our own.
