El Dorado County election results

Under half of the registered voters in El Dorado County turned out in the polls Tuesday for the Presidential primary race that also chose a county judge and a few measures adjusting the county charter and growth in the county.

50,477, or 46.11 percent of the voters, voted in the June 7, 2016 election.

Measures needed to pass by a majority:

Measure A passed by a 2,600 vote margin with 53.02 percent of the vote. The preamble of the County Charter will be changed to new wording.

260 teams coming through Tahoe as they run 178 miles in two day race

The 12th annual Reno Tahoe Odyssey will take runners from Reno, north of Verdi, down to Boca Reservoir, Truckee, down to South Lake Tahoe, over to Virginia City and back to Reno starting Friday afternoon, June 3. The event this year is 178 miles long, has 260 teams which split up 36 legs of the race, and they don't stop as the sun drops, they run all night long.

Amgen Tour of California finishes in Sacramento

After 782 miles and eight days of racing, 23 year-old Julian Alaphilippe (FRA) of Etixx – Quick-Step Pro Cycling Team clinched the 2016 Amgen Tour of California championship, becoming the youngest rider to hold that title in the race’s 11 years. U.S. National Road Race Champion Megan Guarnier (Glens Falls, New York) of Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team also celebrated victory in Sacramento as the four-day Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease™ Women’s Race Empowered with SRAM which concluded along with the men’s event.

Amgen riders consume 4,000 to 8,000 calories a day

At the 2016 Amgen Tour of California, the biggest and most prestigious pro cycling race in America, the young development team Axeon Hagens Berman is making a name for itself and its riders – and three of them share a look at what's for breakfast on the road.

The 144 pro cyclists (18 teams) in the 8-day race aim to consume the same amount of calories they burn on the bike, which at Amgen, depending on the length and toughness of the day, can be anywhere between 4,000 to a whopping 8,000 calories!

Some trucks and boats on trailers cannot pass through Cave Rock tunnel

With construction started in the U.S. 50 Cave Rock tunnel, travelers need to know restrictions now that both lanes of traffic go through the eastbound tunnel.

Because of the slope of the interior to the tunnel, no oversized vehicles or oversized loads are allowed (wider than 8'6" and taller than 14'6"). Most buses and RVs are smaller than these restricted sized, and have been able to travel through the tunnel safely according to Meg Ragonese, Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) Public Information Officer.

Amgen tour sets up final race day in Sacramento

With thousands of fans lining the streets of Santa Rosa, Team KATUSHA’s star sprinter Alexander Kristoff (NOR) catapulted to a stage win, his eighth of the season, by a rim over all-time Amgen Tour of California stage win record holder Peter Sagan (SVK) of Tinkoff, who had spent much of the 109.1-mile day in a breakaway. The Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease™ Women’s Race Empowered with SRAM also spent the day in Santa Rosa, with cycling’s winningest woman Marianne Vos (NED) cinching the victory for Rabo Liv Women Cycling Team.

Dedication of latest phase of Lake Tahoe Bikeway

Another section of what is becoming the premier bikeway circling Lake Tahoe was dedicated in a ceremony behind Lakeside Inn on Wednesday. This new shared-use trail connects to Rabe Meadow with access to Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort.

"The TTD (Tahoe Transportation District) is pleased to have been part of this project," said Carl Hasty, District Manager of TTD. "Bike trails are thought of as a 'nice to do' project in many areas, but in Lake Tahoe they are important."

Young fans line up to watch elite women cyclists in Thursday's Amgen

It's not every day that elite cyclists come to your hometown for an international race, so when they do, take advantage of it. Students from Bijou Community School walked to the corner of Pioneer Trail and Ski Run Blvd. on Thursday to watch Stage 1 of the Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Race.

As the women raced by the young fans, they heard the chanting of "U.S.A" and the sounds of cowbells.

After a race around Lake Tahoe, Stage 1 for the women ended with Megan Guarnier of the United States in first. Here are the winners Thursday:

Skujins breaks away at finish line to win Stage 5 of Amgen in South Lake Tahoe

Stage 5 of the Amgen Tour of California is in the books. 24-year-old Toms Skujins from Latvia burst across the finish line at Heavenly Mountain Resort at the last second Thursday, edging out Adam De Vos of Canada and Xabier Zandio of Spain to take the win.

The day began as riders left Lodi at 50 feet above sea level, and crossed the finish line 130 miles later in South Lake Tahoe at 6,650 feet.

Amgen excitement building for South Lake Tahoe races

Stage 4 of the Amgen Tour of California is in the books, and now it's time for 180 of the best in men's cycling and 108 of elite women's racers to head to South Lake Tahoe.

Peter Sagan won Wednesday's race at the Laguna Seca racetrack. BMC's Greg Van Avermaet challenged Sagan, but it wasn't enough and the Tinkoff rider easily won and now wears the green jersey of the sprint competition leader. Dimension Data’s Nathan Haas was third after leading out the sprint.

Great viewing spots throughout South Lake Tahoe for Amgen Tour

Not only do people around South Lake Tahoe get the opportunity to watch international stars of men's cycling on Thursday, they also get to watch the women as the Amgen Tour of California features both races.

There will be a Lifestyle Festival in the parking lot at Heavenly California Base Lodge from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This is the starting and ending point for the women's race, as well as the finish for the men, so a great viewing spot, but there are other opportunities to watch the cyclists as they zip by all through town.

Countdown to Amgen: First Stage in the books, South Lake Tahoe on Thursday

It came down to the final moment of the race, and Peter Sagan emerged from the impressive field of sprinters as the winner of the San Diego Stage 1 during the Amgen Tour of California on Sunday, May 15.

Sagen, who rides for Tinkoff, was last year’s overall winner. This was his third victory of the season. Cannondale’s Wouter Wippert earned runner-up honors on the stage and Dylan Groenewegen of LottoNL – Jumbo took third at the end of the 105 mile stage in and around San Diego.

OMG Fun Run to take runners up Meyers Grade

The inaugural OMG Fun Run will be held in Meyers on Sunday, May 22, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to noon. OMG stands for "Old Meyers Grade," and that is where the course will take participants, over the 2.6 mile round-trip road which at one time took cars up Echo Summit.

Team led by Whittell grad develops race car that goes 1,215 miles per gallon

Mickey George, a member of the Whittell High School class of 2012, helped the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) Supermileage Team recently achieve high scores at the Shell Oil Eco-Marathon in Detroit.

The three-day event scores a car's performance based on energy efficiency, not speed. George served as the team's manufacturing lead.

Achieving 1,215 miles per gallon, Cal Poly's gasoline-fueled prototype vehicle was the top-scoring American entry and placed third overall at the 10th annual competition.

Tahoe Outrigger Canoe Club looking for new paddlers

Stand up paddle shop moving into old winery with new wine and coffee bar

It was down to the 11th hour, Chris Brackett had to be out of his South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle location and had no place to go with all of his boards. He was in the same situation as Rude Brothers, the bagel and coffee shop that shared the same location. With the building sold and all tenants given notice to move, both businesses needed to relocate.

Volunteers needed for Amgen Tour's South Lake Tahoe competition

The Amgen Tour of California South Lake Tahoe Organizing Committee is seeking 300 volunteers for the combined stages for men and women on Thursday, May 19, 2016.

The men’s elite race Stage 5 will begin in Lodi, Calif. at 10 a.m., and finish around 3:45 p.m. at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge in South Lake Tahoe totaling 132.4 miles. The women’s Stage 1 will start at 10:50 a.m. and finish approximately at 2:00 p.m. at Heavenly, totaling 72.7 miles.

South Lake Tahoe students get minimum day for Amgen Tour

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District has changed the school calendar to accommodate the anticipated road closures needed for the upcoming Amgen Tour.

Due to the rolling lane closures at approximately the same time schools are let out, students will get a minimum day on Thursday, May 19, 2016.

Two men are behind bars after being arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the shooting death of Dennis Wright, Jr. in South Lake Tahoe on January 30, 2016.

Cave Rock tunnel to be extended 60 feet this summer

The westbound, lakeside Cave Rock tunnel entrance will get a makeover this summer, one that will stop rocks from falling onto Highway 50, add lighting to the inside of the tunnel as well as adding water quality improvements.

Devin Cartwright, Supervisor with the Nevada Department of Transportation's Roadway Design Division, spoke to the South Lake Tahoe Lodging Association Thursday, giving them a overview of the project that will bring with it one lane of traffic in each direction, causing some traffic delays, 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week from May to October, 2016.

14 car pile-up sends 1 to hospital and closes Highway 88 for three hours

A series of five collisions occurred on Highway 88 on the morning of Saturday, February 6, 2016 near the Kirkwood Inn, injuring two and sending one to the hospital.

The collisions were caused by multiple drivers traveling at unsafe speeds for the conditions and following too close to other vehicles according to the California Highway Patrol.

"Slow and Steady Wins the Race couldn't be more true this Saturday morning," the South Lake Tahoe office of the California Highway Patrol said in a statement. "You can't be the first on the mountain if you don't make it there."

South Tahoe High Alpine Ski Teams end regular season at the top

The regular season is over for the seven high schools that make up the Tahoe Basin Ski League, and South Tahoe High took overall first place.

The Boys Team ended the season in first, the Girls Team in second, giving STHS enough points for the overall title.

Whittell High School boys ended the season in fifth, girls in sixth, with an overall sixth place.

Two men sought in South Lake Tahoe murder

Investigators from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department are looking for two suspects in Saturday night's murder of 40-year-old Dennis Wright, Jr. at the Beverly Lodge. According to SLTPD, Wright and his girlfriend came to South Lake Tahoe from their home in Amador County to sell 100 pounds of marijuana from a room at the motelnwhich is located on Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Amgen Tour announces Lake Tahoe men's and women's race schedule

Lake Tahoe will be the scene of both Amgen Tour of California's men's and women's races in May of 2016, and the routes announced Thursday show cyclists will ride into the Tahoe Basin from Kirkwood and Hope Valley, circle the lake, ride up the mountains leading to the Heavenly Mountain Resort and through South Lake Tahoe.

South Tahoe High Alpine Ski Team leading Tahoe Basin Ski League

The ski race season is in full swing for area high schools, with five races already completed. After Monday's slalom race at Heavenly Mountain Resort, South Tahoe High leads the Tahoe Basin Ski League with four girls and four boys in the top ten in their respective divisions.

Whittell High School's Payton Norton leads all boys in the league with his teammate Gunnar Barnwell currently in 10th place.

South Lake Tahoe sports roundup: On the snow and on the court

South Tahoe High and Whittell High athletes have seen wins this week, both on the court and on the slopes and South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman is at Mammoth Mountain today for the first stop for the FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup 2016.

South Tahoe High's varsity basketball teams won Wednesday night in Sparks. The boys beat the Railroaders 77-63 while the girls handled their opponent, winning the game by a score of 54-34.

Several Lake Tahoe skiers named to U.S. Alpine Ski Team

Several skiers from the Lake Tahoe area were announced to the 2015/16 US Alpine Ski Team, including Olympians Julia Mancuso, Travis Ganong, Tim Jitloff and Marco Sullivan. Even though Mancuso was name to the team she will miss out on the season due to hip surgery, but has her sights set on the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang.

Turkey Trot Fun Run in South Lake Tahoe Saturday

Amgen Tour for both men and women returns to South Lake Tahoe

Exciting news for South Lake Tahoe, the cycling community and local tourism today when it was announced that the Amgen Tour of California will be returning to the South Shore for both men's and women's events.

Professional cyclists will return to the lake for the men's Stage 5 finish and the women's Stage 1 start on Thursday, May 19, 2016. The men will take off in Lodi, Calif. and finish at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge in South Lake Tahoe. The women will also start/finish at Heavenly Mountain Resort on May 19.

City addressing complaints about Caltrans projects in South Lake Tahoe

There's an old joke about the seasons in Lake Tahoe: There are two seasons in Lake Tahoe. Winter, and Road Construction.

While the "winter" comment may not be as it once was, there is no question about "road construction" as it now goes from May through October.

Part of living in the mountains is sharing our best weather months with construction workers, road controls and traffic cones. Residents get that. But what drivers went through during the 2015 construction on highways 50 and 89 was not only inexcusable, it was preventable.

11th Annual Mutt Strut Poker Run in South Lake Tahoe

The Animal Coalition of Tahoe’s 11th annual Mutt Strut Poker Run, a fun, family event where you can get a little exercise with your pooch, play poker, and maybe win some prizes is just a few days away!

The Mutt Strut will begin at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Lakeview Avenue with registration from 11:30 a.m. to noon on Sunday September 27.

Thousands participate in IRONMAN Lake Tahoe

Almost 2,500 athletes from around the world experienced a Lake Tahoe many will never know. A 2.4 miles swim in the lake was followed by a 112 mile bike ride and capped off with a 26.2 mile run.

Emerging from the pack as the overall winner was Gregory Lindquist, an attorney from Boulder, CO who competes in the Men's 30-34 age group. He finished in 9 hrs 39 minutes and 23 seconds. After hours of competition, second place finisher Ryan Linden was just 29 seconds behind. Linden is from Washington, MI and is also in the 30-34 group.

Facts about Saturday's South Lake Tahoe 50th Anniversary Parade

More than 100 vehicles and floats will be in Saturday's parade that will be celebrating the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th anniversary. Along with the moving entries there will also be 500 people walking along the route.

1,800 cyclists to bike around the lake in Sunday's Tour de Tahoe

The 13th annual Tour de Tahoe bicycle ride around the lake is on Sunday, September 13. More than 1,800 riders are expected to take on the 4,000 feet of climbing involved in the ride which continues to gain in popularity. Besides recreational riders there will also be teams riding to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Route for City's 50th Parade changed so it leads to "Party in the Park"

The route of the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th Anniversary Parade on Saturday, September 19 has changed direction so it will lead to Bijou Park for the grand opening of the Bijou Bike Park.

So far there are 85 entries in the parade along with over 300 walkers joining in the festivities. The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the 'Y' and will proceed East on Highway 50, turn right onto Al Tahoe Blvd. and end at Bijou Community Park where the city will officially open and dedicate the Bijou Bike Park with a “Party at the Park.”
