No dogs allowed — in the bar

Chances are, the beast sitting on the bar stool next to you won’t be a real dog.

A measure heard Monday by the Senate Government Affairs Committee seeks to allow operators of stand-alone bars, saloons and taverns to allow dogs inside their establishments without interference from local government overseers.

But county health officials testified against Senate Bill 105, sponsored by Sen. James Settelmeyer, R-Minden.

Settelmeyer introduced the bill at the request of Karen Woodmansee, editor of the Virginia City News in Storey County. She also works at a local casino.

Colorado’s legal weed market: $700 million in sales last year, $1 billion by 2016

Legal marijuana was a $700 million dollar industry in Colorado last year, according to a Washington Post analysis of recently-released tax data from the state's Department of Revenue. In 2014, Colorado retailers sold $386 million of medical marijuana and $313 million for purely recreational purposes. The two segments of the market generated $63 million in tax revenue, with an additional $13 million collected in licenses and fees.

STHS grad returns to the South Shore as Hard Rock's new Executive Chef

Nothing like returning to your hometown with a bang in the midst of the biggest thing to happen in South Lake Tahoe in quite some time. Jonathan Snyder, a 1991 graduate of South Tahoe High, returned to his roots Wednesday as the Executive Chef at the newly opened Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Snyder greeted the media on Wednesday during the media tours of the hotel, restaurants and casino.

If you haven't made it to Azul Latin Kitchen yet it may be time to schedule a visit for lunch, dinner or a cocktail. The decorations are the bar are very creative and homey, including furniture hanging on the wall and crates as the light fixtures.

Azul opened in the Heavenly Village several weeks ago but they just had their official ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony on November 7. Many people from the South Lake Tahoe business community stopped by to enjoy the food and drinks, many for the first time. A band played near the fire pit outside.

Former Horizon Casino in Lake Tahoe to become a Hard Rock Casino & Hotel

South Lake Tahoe's Horizon Resort Casino is going to be a Hard Rock Casino & Hotel by the end of 2014 or beginning of 2015.

This comes amid local speculation and rumors that have been circling the community since the Horizon's closure this spring.

The new casino has a facebook page and website already.

Hard Rock Lake Tahoe is undergoing $60M in renovations and redesign that will highlight rock and roll and will also serve as a live music venue.

The Walls Came Tumbling Down....

The City of South Lake Tahoe issued a press release last week, inviting the public to a 9 a.m. ceremony on Monday morning to witness the long awaited removal of the fence at The Chateau Project near Stateline. Apparently the contractors on the project, SMC Contracting, had a different time frame in mind because when dignitaries, the press and the public showed up, the fence was already down.

The concrete barriers were all that remained along Highway 50, with some metal fencing and barriers remaining on the Stateline Avenue side.

South Lake Tahoe Landmark Restaurant Torn Down; New Building on the Way

It was once a plumbing supply store. It was once Johnny's Basque Restaurant. It was once the Vali-Hi. It was once the China Wok. For a short time, it was Godfather's Pizza. Most recently, it was a series of Chinese buffets. But that was then.

The building was torn down last week to make way for the future home of SUP Tahoe and South Shore Bikes.

Lakeside Inn and Casino Returns Cattle Grazing to Historic Lake Shore Meadow

April 1, 2014 (Stateline, Nev.) -- Lakeside Inn and Casino announced the United States Forest Service would be processing a permit for livestock grazing in Rabe Meadow, land adjacent to the hotel/casino for the purpose of raising prime Angus beef for Brazilian Barbecue at its Latin Soul restaurant. Rabe Meadow has historically supported cattle grazing during summer periods on the shores of Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe Tourism Officials Denounce Fireworks Lawsuit

With Tahoe South’s two annual fireworks celebrations meeting all state and federal standards throughout their 30-year history, area tourism officials strongly denounced a lawsuit that could threaten the annual July Fourth and Labor Day events as totally unnecessary.

In November, Joseph and Joan Truxler, of Zephyr Cove, Nev., filed a federal lawsuit against the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and Pyro Spectaculars North alleging the twice-annual fireworks shows violated the Clean Water Act.

Round Hill Pines Scheduled to Change Operators at End of 2013

Bob and Tammy Hassett, current operators of Camp Richardson and Meeks Bay Resort have been selected to run the concession at Round Hill Pines Resort according to Cheva Heck of the U.S. Forest Service. The current lease is held by the Forvilly family and is set to expire on December 31, 2013. Frank Forvilly has operated Round Hill Pines since 1971 and just found out yesterday that they weren't awarded the new contract.

Back Roads - Lake Tahoe to Apple Hill via Highway 4

My daughter and I had been planning our annual Apple Hill trek for several days when I decided to change it up a bit. Since my free time is so rare I figured why not include a visit to our favorite little town Sutter Creek? And then, since we're doing that, might as well throw in a drive down beautiful Highway 4! Since the portion of the road we'll be covering is closed after the first big snow we had to do it! The day was plotted on a map in my head with some verification on google maps. The map said our little trip was going to take 5 hours and 10 minutes and cover 225 miles.

Council Votes to Ban Single Use Plastic Bags in South Lake Tahoe

With a vote of 3 to 2 in favor, the City Council today voted to ban single use carry out plastic bags in the South Lake Tahoe city limits. This issue was passionately debated by council members and the 8 citizens that offered their comment during today's City Council meeting. The city council is expected to finalize the ordinance later this month. The ban will take effect in grocery stores and farmers markets three months after adoption and will apply to all retail establishments after one year. Pharmacies,restaurants, and non-profits are exempted.

2013 Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation Food Fest

The Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation will have its annual signature fundraiser, The Fall Food Fest, on Saturday, October 26, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Harvey’s Convention Center. Despite smoky skies, South Lake Tahoe was still a hot spot this Labor Day Weekend. The 4th Annual Sample the Sierra festival brought in masses of people to taste the unique flavors of the Sierra Nevada. The kickoff Winemakers Dinner at Bumgarner Winery spoiled attendees with a five course meal prepared in the wood fired oven with each course appropriately paired with one of Bumgarner’s fine wines. Saturday’s Sip & Shop at Après Wine Company drew more than 20 people to taste C.G. Di Arie wines and gourmet cheeses.

South Lake Tahoe jail inmates enrolled in culinary program win at county fair

In 2007 the El Dorado Sheriff’s Department formed a partnership with the Lake Tahoe Community College to expand the College’s existing culinary arts program to the Sheriff’s Tahoe jail.

Every year the inmates test their quality by entering the El Dorado County Fair in the Baking and Fiery Fair categories. Since 2007 the inmates have amassed over 70 first, second, and third place ribbons. This year was no exception. The inmates in the culinary arts program earned a total of 31 ribbons: 12 First Place, 11 Second Place, and 6 Third Place ribbons.
