Dozens of employers will be on hand at Tuesday's Tahoe Regional Community Job Fair at Harrah's Tahoe from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Local businesses are looking for help to set up concerts in the area this summer, staff for golfing, boating, casinos, summer adventures on the slopes, retail, restaurants, the Forest Service, construction, lodging and banking to name just a few.

Tahoe Chamber moves Sample the Sierra event to September 17

This year, the Tahoe Chamber sponsored event has moved to Saturday, September 17 at Bijou Community Park from noon to 5:00 p.m.

Fight over Yosemite names escalates

The National Park Service has opened up a new front in the fight over the names of historic hotels and other beloved landmarks at Yosemite National Park.

The agency has asked a federal trademark board to cancel trademarks obtained by the company that previously ran the park’s hotels, restaurants and outdoor activities, the Sacramento Bee reported Friday. Those trademarks include the name, “The Ahwahnee,” which was used on a luxurious stone and timber hotel with stunning views of the park’s fabled granite peaks, and “Curry Village,” a woodsy family-friendly lodging complex.

St. Patrick's Day DUI checkpoint in South Lake Tahoe

With St. Patrick's Day being one of the biggest holidays centered around partying, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department is having a DUI Checkpoint as well as extra patrols on the roads to help lower deaths and injuries.

The checkpoint will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. on St. Patrick's Day, March 17. The location has not been disclosed.

California Assembly votes to raise smoking age to 21, seeks e-cigarette bans

In an effort to target young smokers and keep them away from the harm of nicotine, the California Assembly voted to raise the smoking age from 18 to 21 on Thursday. If it passes the Senate, California would be among the first states to raise the smoking age. Hawaii has already done so, and it appears New Jersey isn't far behind.

Last year, the state Senate approved the bill but it stalled for months in the Assembly, so many legislature observers in Sacramento think the move to raise the smoking age won't face much opposition.

Public gets chance to ask questions about US50 Revitalization project

The public once again had the opportunity to participate in the planning of the US50/South Shore Revitalization plan (also known as the Loop Road) during a meeting held at South Tahoe Middle School Wednesday evening. About 100 people took advantage of having the opportunity.

A panel made up of three representatives from the project, Tahoe Transportation District's Carl Hasty and Russell Nygaard, and the Project Manager Mark Rayback from Woods Rodgers.

Every Friday for the last 6 years, Bread & Broth has been partnering with Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church (LTCPC) to feed the hungry through the “Second Serving” program. “Second Serving” meals consist of soup and a simple entrée such as pasta dishes, Sloppy Joes and chili cheese dogs which are served from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Family room of the LTCPC. These meals complement the Bread & Broth Monday evening full-course dinners served at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall.

Burning Man skydiver killed in Paris attacks

Pierro Jacare Innocenti, 40, of Paris, was killed when gunmen stormed the sold-out Eagles of Death Metal show that Innocenti was attending at the Bataclan Concert Hall. Innocenti posted a photo on his Facebook page of the concert billboard with the comment “Rock!” at 8:45 p.m., less than an hour before three gunmen gunned down 89 people at the venue.

On Friday evening, gunmen and suicide bombers with the Islamic State, or ISIS, almost simultaneously targeted the concert hall, a major stadium, restaurants and bars in Paris, leaving at least 129 people dead and hundreds wounded.

Gardnerville restaurateur celebrates expansion to the South Shore

Sam's Place Bar & Grill and the Cork & More, two iconic South Lake Tahoe businesses, surprised many with their news this week that they are ending their multi-decade runs on the South Shore.

Neighbors want South Lake Tahoe property gone

Last week, South Tahoe Now carried a story about changes on the South Shore, businesses who were moving, starting or renovating.

Since that time, information has surfaced about one of the subjects, the Tahoe Pines Lodge.

New owner Darren Cobrae said he wanted to remodel the aging motel which has become home to long term renters. His plans for the property included adding two restaurants and retail space.

Vendor pairings announced for Labor Day's Sample the Sierra

Historic Tahoe Trout Farm faced with off-site sign challenge

The year was 1946. The President was Harry S. Truman, "It's a Wonderful Life" was in the theaters and a stamp cost three cents. It was also the year the Tahoe Trout Farm opened in South Lake Tahoe.

This business, located off of Lake Tahoe Blvd on Blue Lake Avenue, was the topic of the South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission's meeting on August 13.

In an effort to "Clean Up Highway 50," the City's sign ordinance is meant to get rid of the blight and unattractive signage that visitors and locals see each day they travel the main artery through town.

South Lake Tahoe Jail inmates win 17 awards at County Fair

Inmates from the Tahoe jail's culinary arts program won 17 awards at this summer's El Dorado County Fair, something they've done consistently for the past nine years. Since 2007, inmates have had food entries at the fair, bringing home a total of three best in shows, 51 first place awards, 47 second place awards, and 13 third place awards.

This year the inmates entered 18 items winning 17 awards. They received 10 first place and 7 second place ribbons. The ribbons are all posted down the walls at the jail's kitchen.

Years of water conservation have helped South Lake Tahoe

As one can imagine, Donielle Morse has been very busy lately. As the Water Conservationist specialist for the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD), Morse spends her days informing, teaching and keeping up on the new state water mandates.

Drought or no drought, water conservation is necessary and its the reason South Lake Tahoe is faring better than most communities in the West. Since 2007, local water users have cut back 27% of their annual water usage.

As the severe drought in California continues, the following water restrictions and provisions of the South Tahoe Public Utility District Water Conservation Program and the California State Water Resources Control Board Emergency Water Conservation Regulation are mandatory to conserve water resources. Failure to comply may result in a fine.

RESTRICTIONS
• Outdoor irrigation may only occur between the hours of 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and is limited to 20 minutes per zone per day, on your designated watering days. Drip or micro irrigation is exempt from this requirement;

South Lake Tahoe no longer a part of Hot August Nights

For the past several years, South Lake Tahoe has been a part of Hot August Nights with a few days of local show and shines, cruises and concerts prior to the big annual event in Reno.

This is no longer the case.

Without funding or a local venue to take on the "South Lake Tahoe Experience," Hot August Nights is bypassing the lake in 2015.

Monthly local's night at Lake Tahoe Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

As a thank you to area residents and employees, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe is hosting a free industry night for locals on the last Sunday of every month featuring live concerts in Vinyl. The first monthly event is Sunday, April 26 with a performance by Forget the Roses. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show starts at 9 p.m.

Local CHP officers trade in handcuffs for menus and aprons at Applebee's

Local law enforcement will trade in their handcuffs and badges for aprons and menus at Applebee’s restaurants in South Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada on Thursday, April 30 as part of a Tip-A-Cop® event benefiting Special Olympics.

The South Lake Tahoe California Highway Patrol (CHP) will have officers at the Applebee's located at 3987 Lake Tahoe Blvd for both lunch and dinner.

Highway 89 construction this summer worries business owners

While the summertime tourist to South Lake Tahoe should only be slightly affected, business owners along Highway 89 are worried about their livelihood with overnight road construction and blocked driveways.

During Thursday evening's Caltrans informational meeting at South Tahoe High, several owners of lodging properties, restaurants, sports and retail stores spoke about their concerns during the project which will last from mid-April to mid-October in 2015 and could even extend into the 2017 building season.

South Lake Tahoe Community Job Fair to be held

Due to popular demand, community job fairs will be held on both the North and South Shores of Lake Tahoe this spring. Last year's Tahoe Job Fair was held at Squaw Valley and over 1,100 perspective employees attended.

In a joint effort between Harrahs and Harveys, the Lake Tahoe Sustainability Collaboration, Professional Ski Instructor's Association and the American Assocition of Snowboarder Instructors, the Tahoe Regional Community fair will be held on the South Shore March 31 and on the North Shore on April 1.

Imagine Dragons, Sammy Hagar and Slightly Stoopid added to Harveys Outdoor Arena lineup

Grammy-award winning alternative rock band Imagine Dragons has been added to the Harvey's Outdoor Concert Series with a performance on July 18. Imagine Dragons' debut album in 2012 produced a slew of hits which include "Radioactive," "It's Time," "Demons," "On Top Of The World," "Bleeding Out," "Tiptoes" and "Nothing Left To Say."

Their second album, "Smoke + Mirrors", was released in February. Tickets will cost $89.50-$179.50 and go on sale at 10 a.m. on March 20.

Fees to be charges for required stormwater commercial inspections

The City wants to recover some of the fees involved in the enforcement of a state mandated stormwater program which requires them to ensure commercial businesses are not discharging waste or pollutants into the storm drain system.

Keeping grease, oil and other contaminants out of the system is the goal of the program. Jason Burke, the City's Stormwater Program Coordinator, told the City Council on Tuesday that he will provide outreach and education to the high profile businesses that use grease and oil on a daily basis.
