Alpine Aspen Festival celebrates fall colors

The fall colors in Hope Valley attract thousands of visitors each year, and Alpine County has started an annual celebration to celebrate the Aspen tree's beauty and role in providing clean water to millions of Californians.

The two day Alpine Aspen Festival will be held October 10-11, 2015.

Homebrew for the Homeless to raise funds for Tahoe Warming Room

The Tahoe Homeless Coalition will be the recipient of funds raised at "Homebrew for the Homeless," and event for the whole family on Saturday, September 26.

The Leigh Wayne Miller DDRC ranch in Minden will be the scene for a day of fun and fundraising starting at 1 p.m. The horse ranch is located at 1625 Chowbuck Street.

An online biking guide for cyclists of all abilities in the South Lake Tahoe, North Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Carson Valley and California Alps just been released. 22nd Annual Boys and Girls Club Golf Tournament at Edgewood

Edgewood Tahoe is the home of the 22nd annual Boys & Girls Club Golf Tournament on Monday, October 12. The event raises over $40,000 each year to support the work of the club, which assists more than 600 local kids throughout the year.

This popular day of golf, food and fun normally sells out so early registration is recommended.

Nevada State Fair wraps up in Carson City on Sunday

There is just one day left to enjoy the Nevada State Fair at Carson City's Fuji Park. The fair has been a four day event featuring agriculture, carnival, evening entertainment and community showcase.

Dozens of vendor will at the fair, providing food, drink and product and local information.

Sunday's schedule of events:

History Sunday: The Pony Express Rides Again

Even though it lasted just 19 months, the Pony Express played an important role in the western expansion of the United States. The Pony Express was the most direct and practical means of east-west communications prior to the telegraph.

With the threat of the Civil War there was a need for faster communication with the growing number of people living in the West. Three men understood this need (William H. Russell, William B. Waddell, and Alexander Majors) and created the Pony Express.

Tahoe Bike Challenge wraps up with a Cycle Celebration

The 2nd annual Cycle Celebration will culminate the Tahoe Bike Challenge where 315 riders made 2,706 trips and covered 17,299 miles in the Lake Tahoe area on their bikes between June 1 and 14. All of those miles saved participants $3,845 in gasoline.

Bellamy Court at the back of Heavenly Village (by the parking garage) will be closed off for the celebration on Saturday, June 20 for a plethora of activities to celebrate biking in Lake Tahoe from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

City staff and locals help kick off the Tahoe Bike Challenge

Local cyclists got into the biking mode Monday in South Lake Tahoe at the start of the two week long bike challenge.

Pearl Izumi at the Y hosted the "Ready, Set, Pedal" party with swag bags, food and special discounts. Riders gathered at the store and started on either a 5 mile or a 10 mile loop.

66th Annual Wagon Train heads through South Lake Tahoe

A glimpse of times gone by will be moving along roads Sunday morning as the 66th Annual Wagon Train ride begins their week long trek from Zephyr Cove, NV to Placerville, CA.

In the early 1850's, pioneers crossed the Sierra Nevada into California, traversing what we now know as Echo Summit and the Highway 50 corridor. This route became known as the "Roaring Road" where travel was so heavy, oftentimes wagon trains were forced to wait for days to have their turn on the road.

Heavenly Gondola opens for the Memorial Day weekend

Heavenly Mountain Resort has switched gears from winter to summer and they're kicking off summer in South Lake Tahoe over Memorial Day Weekend. The Heavenly Gondola will be running 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 23-25 for sightseeing, dining and hiking on the mountain.

This is just a peek into activities at the top of the mountain since they won't open for full summer operations until June 12 when they'll start seven-day-a-week Gondola rides, unveil their new four line Hot Shot Zip Line, and open two of of the ropes courses, Discovery Forest and Boulder Cove.

10th Annual Tahoe Bike Challenge starts June 1

Every year for two weeks, hundreds of Lake Tahoe residents and visitors park their cars and ride their bikes to work, school, and for fun. Participants in the Tahoe Bike Challenge, which runs from June 1 to June 14, track their miles and join the friendly competition for fun prizes and bragging rights.

Final kilometer told the story during Stage 1 of SLT Amgen race

"The way they're dropping off you'd think the Donner Party was back," were the words of the announcer as he reported on the racers heading up Keller Road during the final kilometer of Friday's Amgen race around Lake Tahoe. "There are bodies everywhere," he joked, commenting on the final uphill portion of the race just before the finish line.

After 73.5 miles, the last .6 mile separated the group of women who had stayed in a close pack as they spent three hours racing around the lake.

Honor Ride Lake Tahoe helps injured vets through cycling

Cyclists of all ages and levels are invited to take part in Ride 2 Recovery's Tahoe Honor Ride on Friday, May 8 as part of the Amgen Tour of California.

The Honor Ride Lake Tahoe is a 19-mile route that departs from Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge and takes participants along Pioneer Trail toward Meyers before returning to Heavenly. Post-event celebrations will include the Amgen Tour of California festivities with vendors, food, drinks, DJs, and cheering on the professional athletes as they complete Stage 1.

Wings of Freedom Tour brings vintage planes to Minden-Tahoe Airport

In honor of WWII veterans, the Wings of Freedom Tour will make a stop at the Minden-Tahoe airport June 1-3, 2015 as part of their 110 day U.S. tour.

Plans making the trip will include the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress "Nine-O-Nine," WWII Heavy Bomber, Consolidated B-24 Liberator "Witchcraft" and P-51 Mustang fighter. This is a rare opportunity to visit, explore and learn about these unique and rare treasures of aviation history. There are only eight B-17s still able to fly in the U.S. and the B-24 and P-51 are the only ones remaining in service.

South Lake Tahoe getting closer to having new bike park

Boulder, Colorado has one. Portland, Oregon has one. Even Roseville and Truckee, California have one. If plans go as they appeared to during a presentation at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, South Lake Tahoe will soon have one.

What is it?

"It" is a combination BMX track and mountain bike skills park which will be located at the city owned Bijou Park.

Bijou Bike Park Association (BBPA) and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) President Ben Fish laid out the proposed plan to the Council and community.

Winter concert series continues to at Lake Tahoe Golf Course

Himmel Haus to start Haus Party Winter Music Series in the new year

Starting Friday, January 9, 2015, the Haus Party Winter Music Series will offer live music from all over California, Nevada and the Pacific Northwest every other Friday night.

This 21 and over music series will be held every other Friday night, January 9 – April 17, 2015 at Himmel Haus in South Lake Tahoe, CA. Doors will open at 9:00 pm with live music starting at 9:30 pm. Chamber sponsors the Winter Wine Walk at Heavenly Village

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is holding a holiday wine walk for their December After Hours Mixer. On Thursday, December 11, both members and non-members will get a passport and move from store to store at the Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe.

There will be El Dorado County wine as well as food at participating locations.

If participants find they have had too much to drink, free rides are being offered by Yellow Cab for all BAHM passport holders.

A family favorite trip aboard the Polar Express to the North Pole awaits, but tickets are selling quickly.

Young fliers take to the air during South Lake Tahoe Air Show

As part of last weekend's Lake of the Sky Air Show in South Lake Tahoe, kids were invited to take free airplane rides. 46 area youth were able to take part.

The Truckee Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) held a Young Eagles Rally at the Lake Tahoe Airport on September 21.

Full day of South Lake Tahoe activities on tap for Sunday

Visitors and locals alike will find a variety of activities to enjoy in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday, August 31.

The highlight of the day will be the Annual Labor Day Fireworks show. The show features a simultaneous music broadcast that can be heard on local stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL - AM 1490. Show begins at 8:30 p.m. The fireworks are visible from all over town.

Camp Richardson Corral seeks reissue of 20 year permit

The Camp Richardson Corral operates under a U.S. Forest Service Special Use Permit that is up for renewal. As part of the process, the USFS has opened a month long period for comments from the public.

They are asking for input on a proposal to reissue the corral a 20 year special use permit for the operation and maintenance of the corral and outfitting and guiding services.

Northstar California presents iconic, Fourth Annual Tahoe Trail 100

From www.bermstyle.com -I finally got out to ride Mr. Toads a few years ago, and it was a really fun trail —worthy of seeking out to experience. It was a lot more fun than sections of the Flume Trail and Rim Trail we’ve ridden, two XC rides that weren’t as exciting as we had hoped on longer travel rigs. After a discussion with Nat Lopes about building table top jump lines last year, (Nat and his company Hilride consulted on the project) I was looking forward to seeing the jump line on lower Corral.

Leadership Lake Tahoe Class of 2014 Graduates

The Leadership Lake Tahoe class of 2014 graduated from the ten-month program produced by TahoeChamber this week. On June 12, 2014, twenty-two participants, as well as family and friends, celebrated at Aston Lakeland Village with a commencement ceremony and reception to honor the hard work and dedication these individuals displayed throughout the year. Members of the Leadership Lake Tahoe Task Force, Leadership Alumni and TahoeChamber board members congratulated the class on its diligent efforts, as well as its success at the Leadership Lake Tahoe Summit “Elevate Your View” this past March.

El Dorado County Fair Opens in Placerville

It's that time of year again. The county fair, full of funnel cakes, carnival rides, animals, music, exhibits, wheelbarrow races, wine and beer competition and good old fashioned fun.

The El Dorado County Fair opened on Thursday and runs through Sunday, Father's Day at the fairgrounds in Placerville. The theme this year is "Photos, Fathers and Fairs."

The County Sheriff's Office invites community members to stop by their booth and see the brand new state of art patrol vehicles. They'll have a new SUV and sedan on display so people can see inside and check out their new features.

Heavenly Unveils Summer Activities: Ropes Courses, Zip Line, Day Camp

Heavenly Mountain Resort has upped the ante on summer fun, introducing new adventures at the top of the Heavenly Gondola for Summer 2014. Summertime guests will have the opportunity to swing through the trees and fly through the air on new experiences including the Boulder Cove and Black Bear Challenge Courses, the Discovery Forest Canopy Course and the 3,300 foot-long Blue Streak zip line. On Friday, June 13, Heavenly Mountain Resort will open these expanded offerings to the public seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through September 1.

Barton Medical Staff Invest in the Community

Tahoe’s rugged landscape and mild summer temperatures attract a mountain of sports events. From large events such as America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride and the Lake Tahoe Marathon to local favorites like the Tahoe Kids Triathlon, there is sports event for every ability and age group. Barton Health’s medical staff is gearing up for many of these events, but not just to compete.

Carnival Comes to Town

You may have seen the trucks full of carnival games, rides and food arrive in South Lake Tahoe this week. Over the last several days, the parking lot at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa has been transformed into a young person's paradise.

The carnival will be in town June 5 through June 8.

Unlimited ride daily wristbands are available for $25 per person.

Opening night on June 5 will be Buddy night where two-for-one wristbands are available.

Sand Harbor Shuttle Service in Place for Summer

There is a park and ride system for Sand Harbor in place once again for the summer of 2014.

In it's third year, the Tahoe Transportation District’s East Shore Express, the shuttle bus provides rides Incline Village to Sand Harbor. They are able to do so with a federal grant and funds gathered from the selling of Lake Tahoe License Plates.

Nine Decades of South Lake Tahoe Memories

Movies were in a Quonset hut where movie goers had to bundle up to fight the cold. Lake Tahoe was full of one way roads and a 2 room school. The switchboard operator knew where all 50 winter residents were at all times. Cattle walking down Highway 50.

Historic V & T Railroad Begins Season With Annual Mother's Day Wild West Train Ride

National Train Day

To commemorate National Train Day on May 10, the Nevada State Railroad Museum will operate and offer rides aboard Virginia & Truckee Railway's McKeen motor car No. 22. The car entered service for the V&T on May 9, 1910, and was retired in 1945. No. 22 is the only restored and operable McKeen motor car in the world.

In 2012, the Secretary of the Interior granted the No. 22 National Historic Landmark status, which recognizes the McKeen motor car's significance to United States history. The McKeen motor car will operate only three days in 2014 so mark this date on your calendar!

Foot of New Snow Allows Lake Tahoe Businesses to Get Back to Normal

Mother Nature dropped enough snow in the Lake Tahoe basin to allow many winter based operations to get back to business.

Borges Sleigh Rides hadn't been able to run their horse drawn sleigh rides over snow covered meadows since Christmas. On Friday, their staff was keeping busy while enjoying being on the snow again as the sun peaked from behind clouds.

Operations had shifted over to running carriage rides at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel. Those will continue, weather permitting, along with the sleigh rides.
