STHS principal's monos featured on Warren Miller film; Chasing Shadows showing at school

"He" is Chad Houck, second year principal at STHS. Houck was recently featured in his second Warren Miller ski movie, this time in "Chasing Shadows." His first Miller highlight was in 2006 when his monoskiing was in "Off the Grid."

South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman leads US Freeskiing Team

South Tahoe High graduate, and Olympic champion, Maddie Bowman was named to the 2016 U.S. Freeskiing halfpipe team on Thursday. She leads the women's team that also includes Annalisa Drew from Andover, Maine, Devin Logan from Dover, Vermont and Brita Sigourney from Carmel, Calif.

Bowman, a Sierra-at-Tahoe skier, won gold in the freeskiing halfpipe at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi,

The men's team is led by Reno resident and Olympic champion David Wise.

SOS launches programs at Heavenly with 75 local youth

SOS Outreach, a non-profit serving South Lake Tahoe youth, launched their winter mountain program at Heavenly Ski Resort this weekend. Vail Resorts and Heavenly donate instructors, gear and access to the mountain. For their first day on the mountain Saturday, SOS had 75 at risk and underserved youth for day one of a five day Learn to ski/snowboard Program.

SOS uses core values and positive adults while teaching youth to ski or snowboard.
Each day of activities staff and youth participate in has a focus, and this first day on the slopes was "courage".

Weigh in on planned changes at top of Heavenly Gondola

Heavenly is proposing improvement to their existing skiing and snowboarding terrain near the top of the gondola, and the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit wants input from the public.

Improvements would include construction of a permanent ticket sales kiosk, relocation of the Red Fir handle tow lift, installation of a Magic Carpet surface lift, obstacle removal and widening of the Tamarack Return Trail and tree removal under the Blue Streak Zipline.

Several Lake Tahoe skiers named to U.S. Alpine Ski Team

Several skiers from the Lake Tahoe area were announced to the 2015/16 US Alpine Ski Team, including Olympians Julia Mancuso, Travis Ganong, Tim Jitloff and Marco Sullivan. Even though Mancuso was name to the team she will miss out on the season due to hip surgery, but has her sights set on the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang.

SnowGlobe 2015 adds more artists to their Lake Tahoe lineup

The SnowGlobe Music Festival announced Thursday additional artists to the 5th anniversary of the three-day celebration in South Lake Tahoe December 29-31, 2015. Hosted in the heart of California’s breathtaking Sierra Nevada Mountains, the unique outdoor winter festival offers over 50 world-class artists performing multiple stages and culminating in an impressive NYE firework show. By day, time is spent enjoying the many alpine adventures available in the stunning setting of Lake Tahoe.

Heavenly and Northstar to open this weekend!

Mother Nature has put in her best effort and the opening date at both Heavenly and Northstar have been moved up to November 14. The new snow totals overnight, combined with both the anticipated snowfall Monday night and snowmaking efforts, have helped the resorts open a week early.

Sierra-at-Tahoe hasn't given an opening date but Kirkwood has put November 21 on the calendar for their big day. Sierra's marketing team told South Tahoe Now that they are getting excited since snow is falling, and plan on opening as soon as possible.

Boreal and Mt. Rose resorts have already opened.

Tahoe Blizzardfest to have art on the beach, pray for snow party and concert

Lake Tahoe area ski resorts holding job fairs; Teens can apply

Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort will all be having job fairs at the beginning of November, and new this year, 15- and 16-year-old teens can now be employed.

They are accepting applications for the upcoming 2015-16 winter season as well as having the job fairs.

Movie in Lake Tahoe combines snowboarding, surfing and environment

Local Freshies and Beyond Boarding are hosting the U.S. premier of the movie, Northern Grease, at South Lake Tahoe's Himmel Haus on Friday, October 23 at 8 p.m.

Northern Grease is an independent documentary that tells a story of snowboarders and surfers learning the real social and environmental impacts of resource extraction in Northern Canada. The Beyond Boarding crew gives us an in depth look at what’s possible when we all set out to achieve a common goal, no matter what the opposition.

Sierra-at-Tahoe announces upcoming job fairs

There has been a slight dusting of snow over the highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada this week, a sign of the approaching winter season.

In order to prepare for the ski and snowboard season, Siera-at-Tahoe will hold their first job fair of the year on Tuesday, October 6 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Applications for jobs in the food and beverage area will be accepted.

There will be a job fair at the resort November 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for mountain operation jobs such as lift operators, guest services, host, ticket takers, and ski school.

Music and food to reward participants in 9th Annual Keep Sierra Clean Day

The whole community is invited to help clean up Sierra-at-Tahoe during the 9th Annual Keep Sierra Clean Day on Sunday, October 11, 2015. Ride up the Nob Hill chairlift, sweep the mountain of trash and enjoy live music and free lunch on the Solstice Plaza.

In past years, thousands of pounds of trash has been cleared from the summer slopes, brought in by loyal passholders and employees along with community groups and organizations such as the Sierra Education Foundation, local Boy Scouts and West Slope high school ski and snowboard teams.

Sierra-at-Tahoe's John Rice on the evolution of small resorts

22 years in the making, GM of Sierra at Tahoe John Rice, has been living the dream. Rice contributed to the “snowboarding energy” in Tahoe, and specifically at Sierra at Tahoe, in the early 90’s. At a time when snowboarding was barely allowed at the resort and had a non-existent park scene, Rice made a mark.

We were making snowcats do things they weren’t made to do at a time when [snowboard terrain] parks weren’t even allowed [at Sierra at Tahoe].

Firefighter dies while fighting blaze near South Lake Tahoe

8:00 p.m. update 8/9/15

The 21 year-old firefighter who died in Saturday evening as he was working on the Sierra Fire has been identified as Michael Hallenbeck of Shingle Springs, CA.

Hallenbeck was a member of Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) Organized Crew 36.

Northstar holds special women's biking events all summer

Northstar California Resort is rolling out the red carpet for ladies all summer long with specialized mountain bike events and activities designed to fit the schedules and coaching needs of local women.

During the 2014-15 winter season, Vail Resorts launched the 4Her initiative, offering one-on-one ski and snowboard instruction for women, by women. This summer, Northstar is continuing the trend of customized activities that are women-centric.

Man reports robbery by knife point at ATM; Arrested for making false report

A 30-year old South Lake Tahoe man said his "life was boring and stagnant" so he made up being robbed at knife point at an ATM machine on Thursday, May 21.

Police were called to the El Dorado Savings Bank on Al Tahoe Blvd at 5:51 p.m. on Thursday, by a man saying he'd just been robbed. According to the police report, the "victim" said a man approached him as he was making a deposit. The "suspect", described as a white man between 30-34 years old and between 150 and 200 lbs, pulled a knife and asked for the man's wallet. He reported that the robber pulled out a $10 bill and left.

Reno's Jitloff nails third straight national title; Gardnerville's Cohee third

SUGARLOAF, ME - Giant slalom specialist Tim Jitloff (Reno, NV – U.S. Ski Team) threw down on bumpy snow at the Nature Valley U.S. Alpine Championships to take his third national title in a row ahead of first run leader Tommy Ford (Bend, OR – U.S. Ski Team). Former University of Utah racer and current Team Geronimo member Nick Cohee (Gardnerville, NV – Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club/Team Geronimo) took third.

Sierra-at-Tahoe latest resort to close due to drought

Sierra-at-Tahoe is the latest Lake Tahoe area ski resort to announce that it will suspend operations, beginning Monday, because of the lack of snow brought on by the ongoing drought in the west.

Olympian Jamie Anderson gives back to kids on the South Shore

Jamie Anderson continued her Give Back With Love sponsorship program on Tuesday, by giving three local students a dream package of equipment and a ski pass.

Anderson wanted to be present to give the students their prize but, according to Sierra-at-Tahoe, Jamie has been tied up with the X Games and Burton European Open. They wanted to get the kids up on the hill as soon as possible so didn't wait for Anderson's return but she'll join them on the slopes once back in South Lake Tahoe.

Five Tahoe/Reno area skiers named to US Ski Team

World Champions Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO), Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), Bode Miller (Franconia, NH) and Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO) headline a strong group of 26 athletes, 14 men and 12 women, named by the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association to compete in the 2015 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships Feb. 2-15 in Vail/Beaver Creek on home turf. Joining them will be five-time medalist Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) as well as Audi FIS Ski World Cup downhill winners Travis Ganong (Squaw Valley, CA) and Steven Nyman (Sundance, UT).
