Letter to the Editor: City’s 4th of July Parade a huge success

The City of South Lake Tahoe hosted its first annual 4th of July parade on Monday, July 4, 2016. There were a total of 78 vehicles and approximately 200 people on foot either walking, biking, or dancing. American Legion Post 795 served as the parade marshals.

The City of South Lake Tahoe would like to say "Thank You" to all the parade participants, businesses and volunteers for making the 4th of July parade a fantastic community event!

Early morning fire at South Lake Tahoe home

5:30 p.m. update 6/27: A call went into South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue at 6:47 a.m. Monday, June 27 of a home on fire on Kubel Avenue. When personnel arrived, they saw flames from the roof and shed at the rear of the property.

Electrical short at South Lake Tahoe motel causes early morning fire

The cause is still under investigation as to why a mattress caught on fire Friday morning, sending two people to Barton Hospital with minor injuries.

Just after 6:23 a.m. May 27, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to the Sky Lake Lodge at 2644 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Once they arrived they found a mattress on fire.

Preliminary investigation shows an electrical short on or near the mattress caused the fire.

South Shore family safe after home burns in early morning fire

A Christmas Valley family is safe after their home suffered substantial damage in an early morning fire on May 16.

A family of three awoke to the sounds of their smoke detectors wailing and called 9-1-1. At that time, they didn't see flames but quickly exited the home.

Firefighters from the Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) responded at 4:50 a.m. to the 3300 block of West River Park Drive where they found the second story fully engulfed in flames.

Woman rescued from cliffs above Emerald Bay

An Incline Village woman was rescued from the cliffs above Vikingsholm in Emerald Bay on Thursday after she slipped while climbing down the mountain.

Jane Rylander had been climbing in the steep cliff bands from Vikingsholm parking lot down towards the main castle. She slipped and slid down the embankment becoming stuck on the cliff band. She was not injured but could not climb up or down and was in the need of rescue.

Suspected pipe bomb found in South Lake Tahoe turns out to be hoax

10:35 a.m. update: The "all clear" is about to be given at the El Dorado County Government Center. The bomb has been considered a hoax device meant to cause the major response by law enforcement that it did, according to SLTPD Chief Brian Uhler. Evidence is being gathered and roads will soon reopen.

At approximately 6:35 a.m. this morning, a groundskeeper working at the El Dorado County Courthouse located at 1354 Johnson Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe noticed a suspicious device in front of the courthouse.

Fire destroys condos in Tahoe Keys

5/4/16 11:00 a.m. update: The fire that swept through a Tahoe Keys condo complext on Tuesday caused an estimated $3 million in damage. Seven of the units suffered significant damage and a few other units in the surrounding condominiums have had some water and/or smoke damage. Firefighters arrived after receiving the 1:48 p.m. 911 call, and the fire was contained at approximately 4:10 p.m. Fire fighting personnel remained on the scene until 9:00 p.m.

Firestorm surrounding ambulance service in South Lake Tahoe

In the mix you have El Dorado County, the City of South Lake Tahoe, Lake Valley Fire Protection and the Cal Tahoe JPA. More importantly, and most likely the reason for the passionate responses from all involved, the mix also contains the safety of the public.

On March 15, 2016, the City of South Lake Tahoe sent a letter to the JPA, stating their intent to pull out of the agency that was created in 2001 to supply ambulance service to the City and the County and a portion of Alpine County.

Chief Jeff Meston and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) held their annual awards ceremony on Friday January 29, 2016 to celebrate the department's teams members and accomplishments for the past year.

South Lake Tahoe firefighters collecting coats for children

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is hosting a “Coats for Kids Drive” during the month of January and they are looking for donations from the community.

Be a hero and help children of the South Lake Tahoe community stay warm this winter by donating gently used coats. All donations will be distributed to children in need within South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue hosts blood drive and coat drive

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is happy to be hosting both a blood drive and a coat drive in South Lake Tahoe. The goal is to help the community by providing vital blood as a resource within our community and also provide coats to children in need. We encounter children on calls often who could benefit from a coat donation and hope to make a difference with this.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue expands EMS staffing

In a move that will save the city money as well as increase staffing, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue added 12 new Emergency Medical Services (EMS) specialists to their staff on December 14.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is now the only fire department in the Tahoe basin to have three firefighters on each engine at all times and two EMS specialists in the ambulance.

Hundreds evacuated from Montbleu due to fire Friday night

A fire in the air handling unit at Montbleu Resort in South Lake Tahoe forced the evacuation of all casino and convention center patrons on Friday evening.

According to Eric Guevin, Fire Marshal for the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, the motor of the air handling unit caught on fire, forcing smoke into the hallway between the convention center and the casino floor.

One ambulance and fire engine from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded along with four engines from Tahoe Douglas.

Successful Open House at South Lake Tahoe's three fire stations

In honor of National Fire Week October 4-10, the City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Department held an open house at all three of their fire stations on Saturday. The public was invited to get information, learn about fire safety, get free swag and win raffle prizes.

STAT members were on hand at all three locations as well. STAT, which stands for South Tahoe Action Teams, is a program is designed to incorporate trained citizens in the field with the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and other first responders during times of crisis.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue goes pink

For the month of October, members of the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Department will be wearing their pink shirts in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

"We will wear pink from October 1 to October 31," said Captain Tyler Jack, a 8.5 year veteran of SLT Fire.

This is the third year for the pink, a program spearheaded by the firefighter's association. They used to sell the shirts with half of the proceeds going to fight the battle against breast cancer, but with a change in their logo they didn't order new shirts according to Jack.

Open House at all three South Lake Tahoe fire stations

National Fire Week is October 4-10 this year, and in honor of it the City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue will have all three of their fire stations open to the public.

Each location will have different information, so visit one, or all.

There will be trucks on display, information about fire safety and raffle prizes.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tour the following SLT stations:

Fire Station #1 located at 1252 Ski Run Blvd.
Fire Station #2 located at 2951 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
Fire Station #3 located at 2101 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Blood Drive

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is hosting a community blood drive in honor of the 9-11 fallen heroes. It will be held at fire station #3 at the "Y" located at 2101 Lake Tahoe Blvd on Thursday, September 10 from 9 a.m.. to 1 p.m.
