Warm Room opens doors in South Lake Tahoe

We've seen them walking along the streets, sleeping in the forests or hanging outside of an all night market. The faces of South Lake Tahoe's homeless. Winter can be brutal on the homeless in town with below freezing temperatures, snow covered paths and no place to keep warm.

That is, until today.

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless opened the doors of their new Warm Room on Friday, ready to take in their first visitors at 7:00 p.m. It is a safe and warm place for people over 18, getting them out of physically harmful conditions.

Holiday Parade heads through South Lake Tahoe Saturday

The fourth annual Holiday Parade will make its way through South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, December 12 starting at 3:00 p.m.

Golden Bear Events is the organizer of the event which will raise money and food for Christmas Cheer, South Lake Tahoe's year-round food pantry.

This year, ten parade entries will start at the top of Ski Run Blvd, head down towards the lake, turn west on Highway 50 and end in the TJMaxx parking lot where people can enjoy cookies and a visit with Santa Claus. The parade should end there at approximately 3:45 p.m.

South Lake Tahoe drive-by shooting suspect arrested on multiple felony charges

The hunt is over for the suspect in the October 14 drive-by shooting in South Lake Tahoe that sent a 19-year-old man to the hospital.

Samuel Tovar, 43, was arrested after a high-risk search warrant was served at 816 San Francisco Avenue at 10 p.m. Friday, October 4. Inside they found Tovar, who had been avoiding law enforcement since the shooting.

Crackdown on holiday drunk drivers in South Lake Tahoe

If you’re enjoying the holidays with a drink, South Lake Tahoe Police Department has a message for you: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Due to the increase in drunk-driving-related fatalities around the holidays each year, law enforcement agencies across America will be actively searching for and arresting drunk drivers from December 18 to January 3.

Alert neighbor leads to arrest of pair suspected of stealing package

A South Lake Tahoe man is being credited for the arrest of two people Thursday afternoon after he saw them slowly cruising his neighborhood and stealing a package off a neighbor's front porch.

South Lake Tahoe Police warn of possible illegal dental activity

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department has received unspecific information about someone in South Lake Tahoe performing basic dental work without a proper dental office or licenses. A check with two local dentists indicates that some people have needed dental repair work after receiving substandard dentistry possibly occurring in someone’s kitchen. It appears that such activity would function as a “cash” business and prey on the vulnerabilities of the poor.

The South Tahoe Police Activities League (STPAL) would like to extend a thank you to the many community members, organizations and volunteers that made it possible to offer positive alternative activities to the youth of South Lake Tahoe this past summer.

STPAL reached over 60 local middle school-aged kids with the opportunity to learn lifelong skills in mountain biking, skateboarding, and golf alongside positive adult role models.

Man arrested after felony domestic assault in South Lake Tahoe

A man from Canyon Lake, Texas is sitting in a Carson City jail on suspicion of felony domestic battery with strangulation after attacking his girlfriend at the Tahoe Lakeshore Lodge in South Lake Tahoe.

Man jailed in South Lake Tahoe last year arrested in SF for alleged child abduction

A man arrested in South Lake Tahoe one year ago has been charged in last week's attempted kidnapping of a toddler who was riding on a MUNI bus in San Francisco with his mother.

On November 17, 2015, 45-year-old Sudesh Singh allegedly grabbed the one-year-old boy as his mother was waiting on a bus for a transfer slip. Singh ran onto the bus and took the child, put him into his arms and ran away, according to officials.

The mother chased after them and freed the screaming toddler from Singh, who was a stranger to both of them, police said.

South Lake Tahoe Police looking for man who robbed teenager

A 16-year-old South Lake Tahoe boy was walking on the bike path behind the Motel 6 on Monday, November 23 when he was robbed by a man who came out of the bushes. The teen was on the path at 1:30 p.m. when the suspect had his hand in his trench coat pocket, simulating a gun, and pointed it at the boy. The suspect demanded money and the young victim, who believed the man had a gun, gave him what he had. The teen was unharmed in the incident.

The unidentified suspect left the area on foot.

The victim described the suspect as:

-White male adult, between 6’00’’ and 6’03’’

South Lake Tahoe man arrested after pulling knife on grandmother

A man is behind bars on suspicion of pulling a knife on his grandmother and threatening to kill her on Friday night in South Lake Tahoe.

On November 20, 2015, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department responded to a home on Candlewood Drive at 11:35 p.m. A 73-year-old woman had gone to a neighbor's house where she called 911 after her grandson, 30-year-old Jesse Shane Gage, displayed a large knife and threatened to kill her.

Gage, who lives with his grandmother, was arrested and charged with terrorizing, trying to harm an elderly person and exhibiting a deadly weapon.

Man facing several charges after South Lake Tahoe robbery

South Lake Tahoe Police Department officers responded to a report of an armed robbery on Friday night at 7:10 p.m. in the area of the CVS Pharmacy and Tahoe Beach Retreat Hotel on Highway 50. Two adult males reported being robbed by a man brandishing a handgun and long-bladed knife.

As they arrived, officers received other reports of the suspect firing one round after robbing two other adult men at the rear of the hotel.

Tommy Moose, symbol of caring, donated to local police and fire departments

South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire departments, and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office will be handing out stuffed moose to children they come across in their jobs who are facing times of stress, uncertainty and anxiety.

Members of Women of the Moose, and the Loyal Order of the Moose, Chapter 408 donated a box of Tommy Moose to the departments. Tommy Moose personifies one of the tenants of the Loyal Order of Moose: caring for children.

“The healing begins with helping kids at the scene of a serious event—starting right away makes good sense,” said Police Chief Brian Uhler.

American Century donates $55,500 to Lake Tahoe non-profits

Thirty South Lake Tahoe non-profits were given a share of $55,600 on Thursday, bringing the total the American Century Golf Championships have donated to the community this year to $107,100.

SnowGlobe 2015 adds more artists to their Lake Tahoe lineup

The SnowGlobe Music Festival announced Thursday additional artists to the 5th anniversary of the three-day celebration in South Lake Tahoe December 29-31, 2015. Hosted in the heart of California’s breathtaking Sierra Nevada Mountains, the unique outdoor winter festival offers over 50 world-class artists performing multiple stages and culminating in an impressive NYE firework show. By day, time is spent enjoying the many alpine adventures available in the stunning setting of Lake Tahoe.

City of South Lake Tahoe celebrates first 50 years

"South Lake Tahoe, you should be proud of yourself."

Those words, said by South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Brian Williams, were echoed throughout the evening as the City of South Lake Tahoe celebrated its first 50 years with a golden anniversary gala Saturday night.

Almost 300 people were at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel to share memories of the past, review of the present, and a look towards the future of a city that was formed because many of the residents were tired of being represented by a government in Placerville.

Barton Foundation hands out $35,500, still has $14,500 left to give

In a community with many needs, the Barton Foundation today donated $35,500 to ten different agencies that provide services to the residents of South Lake Tahoe during their annual Philanthropy Day. For the seventh year, the Barton Foundation gave away money raised through their annual fundraising efforts which include the annual Festival of Lights.

SLT Police Chief on Officer Hounsell, auto theft, violent crime and winter driving

Tragedy at the Police Department. The department is deeply appreciative of the support given to the family of Mark Hounsell who was killed, along with his wife Jeanne and her friend Laura Fisher, in a motor vehicle accident. They are survived by 4 children who have been the recipients of beautiful and heartfelt support from the entire community. The fund for the Children is now approaching the goal of $130,000. Stabbing at Halloween party in South Lake Tahoe

Halloween night was a busy one for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD). Just as they were handling the arrest of seven people that were found with bandanas over their faces and guns and drugs in their car, officers were called to the scene of a stabbing.

While attending a party at a Silverwood Avenue vacation rental, 21-year-old Josh Boyer of South Lake Tahoe was stabbed multiple times during a fight with several other party attendees.

Seven local gang members arrested in South Lake Tahoe

Suspicious activity on Halloween night led to the arrest of five men and two juvenile girls in South Lake Tahoe on several charges.

Near midnight, two officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) observed two car loads of suspected gang members drive to the dead end of Spruce Avenue, where a drive-by shooting on October 14 had taken place. Some of the occupants had blue bandanas over their faces.

Halloween safety at forefront of law enforcement activities

Halloween is often recognized as a holiday that offers just as much fun for adults as it does for children. Youngsters may look forward to a night of trick-or-treating, but many adults choose to partake in the festivities, too – oftentimes with alcohol included. While Halloween may be a spooky night, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and California Highway Patrol (CHP) want to help ensure that it is also a safe one. If you plan on making alcohol a part of your celebrations this year, designating a sober driver or finding a safe ride home should be a top priority.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested after shots fired at parked car

A 23-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested on October 29 on charges of being an ex-felon in possession of firearm, ammunition and for resisting arrest after a shooting the previous day.

Jahem Barton is suspected of firing several rounds into a car parked in front of a home in the 800 block of Emerald Bay Road.

According to South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Brian Williams, there is an active investigation into the matter and no other details are available at this time.

Barton remains jailed in the El Dorado County Jail Saturday night on a $38,000 bail hold.

Woman arrested on suspicion of auto theft in South Lake Tahoe

A 24-year-old woman was arrested in South Lake Tahoe on suspicion of stealing a car on October 24 in Grizzly Flats, Calif. and driving it to the lake.

South Lake Tahoe Police Officers found Hannah Marie Taylor sitting in the driver's seat of a Silver 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio convertible on October 26 in the parking lot of the 7-11 store located at 3923 Pioneer Trail.

According to SLTPD, Taylor was known to the owner of the car.

Her bail was set at $25,000 and she is no longer in the El Dorado County Jail.

SLT Police Officer Officer Mark Hounsell and wife laid to rest

Hundreds of mourners attended the memorial service for South Lake Tahoe Police officer Mark Hounsell and his wife Jeanne on Saturday at the LifePoint Church in Minden, Nev.

An large crowd of family, friends and law enforcement paid their respects both along the route from the funeral home in Carson City to the church and at the church.

Gunman identified in South Lake Tahoe drive-by shooting

Authorities have identified the suspected shooter in last week's drive-by shooting in South Lake Tahoe.

Samuel Tovar, 26, of South Lake Tahoe is wanted for shooting at a 19-year-old man who was standing in a lot near the corner of Highway 50 and Ski Run Boulevard just before midnight on October 14, 2015. Police were called when the unidentified victim showed up at Barton Hospital with gunshot wounds to his leg.

Memorial service set for South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Mark Hounsell and wife Jeanne

There will be a memorial service for South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Mark Hounsell and his wife, Jeanne Hounsell on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at LifePoint Church in Minden, Nev.

The couple was killed along with a family friend in a single vehicle rollover accident near Fallon, Nev on Saturday, October 17. Hounsell's four children were also in the car, but survived with minor to moderate injuries.

Fundraising campaign for family of SLT Police Officer Mark Hounsell

While the community is still in shock over the death of South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Mark Hounsell, his wife Jeanne and a family friend, a fundraising campaign has started to help their children as they move forward in life without a parent.

All four of Mark's children were in the 2004 Chevy Suburban on October 17, 2015 with Mark and Jeanne when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway and crashed, killing all three adults inside.

South Lake Tahoe City Council censures JoAnn Conner

During a special meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council on Monday, October 19, JoAnn Conner was publicly censured, a first of its kind for the City. An overflowing crowd spent over three hours in Council Chambers as comments were made both supporting Conner, and against what they said was "abusive, bullying and intolerant behavior."

Illinois woman identified in crash that killed South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Hounsell

Laura Fisher of Washington, Illinois has been identified as the third victim in Saturday's single vehicle rollover accident on Highway 50 in Churchill County that also claimed the life of South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Mark Hounsell and his wife Jeanne.

The 33-year-old Fisher was visiting the Hounsells.

The Nevada Highway Patrol investigation details indicate a white 2004 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Minden resident Mark Hounsell, 42, was traveling westbound on US Highway 50. Six other occupants were in the vehicle including his wife Jeanne, 34, Fisher, four children.

It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we inform our South Lake Tahoe community and others of the passing of Officer Mark Hounsell and his wife Jeanne. Mark had served the citizens of South Lake Tahoe as a Police Officer since May 19, 2007.

South Lake Tahoe Police Officer, wife and friend killed in crash

Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly single-vehicle rollover that occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday night that took the life of South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Mark Hounsell and his wife Jeanne, and one other person.

The NHP confirmed Sunday afternoon that three people died in the accident.

South Lake Tahoe man wounded in drive-by shooting

A 19-year-old man was shot in the leg overnight, apparently the victim of a drive-by shooting near the intersection of Highway 50 and Ski Run Boulevard. Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department were called to Barton Hospital just after midnight on the report of a man with a gunshot wound.

The unidentified man's injury is not life threatening according to SLTPD Lt. David Stevenson.

Since the shooting, police have recovered a truck near the "Y" that is suspected of being involved in the crime.

Seminar for people who sell, serve and pour alcohol in SLT

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is inviting business owners of establishments that serve or sell alcohol, and their employees, to attend a free seminar presented by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control on Monday, October 26th, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the City Council Chambers at the South Lake Tahoe Airport, 1901 Airport Road.

The LEAD (Licensee Education on Alcohol and Drugs) seminar will give you:
· Information on what is acceptable I.D.; the best way to check I.D.; how to refuse service; signs and prevention of illicit drug activity, and more

Man sought after trying to abduct a woman in South Lake Tahoe

A man is being sought in South Lake Tahoe after an attempted abduction in the Stateline area on Saturday, October 10.

At 9:40 a.m., officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department responded to the area of Park and Cedar Avenues after getting a call about a suspicious man who approached a woman, telling her he'd shoot if she didn't go with him. He simulated a gun inside the pocket of his grey hooded sweatshirt.

The scared woman ran away and the suspect fled the area prior to the arrival of police.

As of Sunday evening, the only description of the male suspect is:

South Lake Tahoe man in jail on robbery, burglary, drug and assault charges

A 24-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested Thursday on several charges stemming from an incident at his ex-girlfriend's home the night before.

According to South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), Jesus Corona Mariscal went to the former girlfriend's home on Wednesday night. He entered the home, allegedly grabbed her throat and choked her, then stole her keys and phone, and left.

South Lake Tahoe police find sexual assault charges unfounded

The man who came forward after his picture was circulated as being a suspect in a sexual assault case has been cleared by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

Tragedy at a Community College—what are we doing here?

Like many Americans, law enforcement folks have been deeply moved by the horrific images we have seen in Oregon. A certain feeling of helplessness has become the norm when we look at these events from the prevention perspective. We may ask questions like:

“Why do people who would do such a thing have access to a gun?”
“Why didn’t people who knew the shooter do something to stop him before people died?”

160 homes "evacuated" during South Lake Tahoe emergency drill

Though long awaited precipitation decided to fall in South Lake Tahoe Thursday, the Neighborhood Evacuation Drill still went ahead as planned.

"The drill went very well," said SLT Fire Chief Jeff Meston. "Overall a success with lessons learned.

He said there was great interagency cooperation with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Search and Rescue, El Dorado County STAR and South Lake Tahoe Action teams, Public Works department, and the Red Cross all joining the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department in the drill.

Homewood man faces charges of furnishing alcohol to minors

A man from Homewood, CA was arrested and cited on September 25, 2015 for allegedly furnishing alcoholic beverages to minors during the South Lake Tahoe Police Department's "Decoy Shoulder Tap Operation."

Mark Finlayson, 38, was approached by a minor under the direct supervision of a peace officer outside a store in the area of Emerald Bay Road and Lake Tahoe Blvd. The minor asked Finlayson to buy them alcohol, stating they were underage and couldn't purchase the alcohol by themselves.

Finlayson faces a minimum $1000 fine and 24 hours of community service.

Local officers honored during National Thank a Police Officer Day

In light of the recent ambushes and assignations of police officers across the country, communities in the U.S. celebrated the third "National Thank a Police Officer Day" on September 19.

South Lake Tahoe local Daniella Flatau tried to encourage people to support law enforcement by organizing the local celebration of a day meant to show those sworn to protect the public that people support them, especially in a day and age where violence against the police is increasing daily.

8th annual K-9 trials in South Lake Tahoe October 3

The South Lake Tahoe Police Canine (K9) Association (SLTPCA) will be hosting the 8th annual K9 Trials at Lakeview Commons at El Dorado Beach on Saturday, October 3rd.

As a sanctioned Western States Police Canine Association event, it is expected to draw 45-50 canine teams throughout California.

The competition will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 3rd with the Field Search phase which tests the ability of the canine team to locate hidden suspects.
