Scams on the rise on the South Shore, targeting people as tax returns come in
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/14/2016 - 3:57pmJust as people are seeing some extra cash in their pocket with tax returns being processed, scams are on the rise in South Lake Tahoe, and elsewhere, trying to cash in on the extra dough.
In South Lake Tahoe last week, a woman who was selling furniture was caught up in a scam that ended up costing her $1,500, the same price she was selling the items for. According to El Dorado County Sheriff's Sgt. Michael Seligsohn, scams are getting more sophisticated such as the vacation rental scams, but the sold furniture scam this victim fell for is very common.

Lake Tahoe Ski Bum is hosting "Dual on Dynamite" at Sierra-at-Tahoe on Saturday, April 8. This is a dual format bump race that includes professional judges, discounted lift tickets and awards. All proceeds go to support the Sierra Avalanche Dogs.
Olympian and South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Travis Cabral will be once of the judges and celebrities at the event along with Robbie Huntoon, Warren Miller ski sensation and stunt skier in the movie Hot Dog, Daffy Don Ramirez, Murky Mark Watters, Flying Pineapple George Blackbern, U. S. Freestyle Team Judges, Coaches and former mogul competitors.
South Lake Tahoe Police search for convicted sex offender
Submitted by admin on Fri, 04/08/2016 - 9:33amRafael Corea, a 61 year old former restaurant worker, has failed to register as a sex offender and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department would like to find him.
In 1995, Corea was convicted for lew and lascivious acts with a minor aged 14 or 15. As part of his conviction he much register as a sexual offender for the rest of his life, and he failed to do so in 2015 as required.
SLTPD detectives discovered Corea has moved out of his former residence in South Lake Tahoe and his current whereabouts are unknown, and they'd like the public's help in locating him.
Illegitimate massage parlors focus of proposed South Lake Tahoe enforcement

The chase entered near Cardinale Way and it became a foot pursuit near the high school.

In February, 2016, Council sent proposed changes to a sub-committee, and those results will be up for vote Tuesday.
Proposed changes to the Vacation Home Rental (VHR) Ordinance include:
- Application for a VHR permit will not trigger the need to comply to TRPA BMP and coverage compliance.

Man providing beer was found, arrested for providing alcohol to a minor, and kids arrested for minors with alcohol.

Distracted driving focus of zero tolerance days in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/29/2016 - 5:40pmOn April 7 and April 20, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and California Highway Patrol will be especially vigilant for distracted drivers on local roads as part of a joint effort across the state.
Although the officers' goals are not to write as many citations as possible, sometimes citations are necessary for drivers to understand the importance of focusing on their driving.
Distracted driving is such an important safety issue that April is recognized as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Drunk driving is a top problem for both states, and local law enforcement will be joining forces to boost enforcement efforts and initiating a impaired driving mobilization period from March 17 to March 31, 2016.

South Lake Tahoe police officers responded to a call from the Safeway on Lake Tahoe Blvd. at 11:02 p.m. on March 14, 2016 after a physical altercation occurred when two store employees and two citizens tried to stop 19-year-old Jose Rodriguez and 18-year-old Jose Romero as they allegedly attempted to leave the store with the beer without paying.
High speed chase in South Lake Tahoe Tuesday morning
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/15/2016 - 12:47pmAn officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department attempted to pull over a SUV Tuesday morning near the intersection of Carson Avenue and Lake Tahoe Blvd for a traffic violation. The driver of the vehicle, which was a black 2005 GMC Envoy, failed to pull over and led officers on a high speed chase eastbound on Lake Tahoe Blvd.
A witness said the cars looked to be going 80 mph. When they got to the area of Ski Run, officers lost site of the vehicle and its two occupants when they pulled back due to safety concerns, and the pursuit was terminated.

St. Patrick's Day DUI checkpoint in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/10/2016 - 7:08pmWith St. Patrick's Day being one of the biggest holidays centered around partying, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department is having a DUI Checkpoint as well as extra patrols on the roads to help lower deaths and injuries.
The checkpoint will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. on St. Patrick's Day, March 17. The location has not been disclosed.

After a few weeks of practicing with their trained professional partner, the celebrities put on an entertaining show that brought out the cheers and applause, and lots of money for the non-profit.

All of the rehearsing, and nursing aches and pains, have come down to this, the final event which will be held at MontBleu Resort on Saturday, March 5 at 6:30 p.m.
South Tahoe Now caught up with a few of the couples in their secret rehearsals as they polished up their dance moves in preparation for the big night.

Our property crime rate is up 6% (from 516 in 2014 to 548 in 2015). This was not unexpected as we reported on a significant upward trend in property crime 6 months ago. Total crime is down 2.2% over last year.

The body of a 53-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was pulled out of the water by the Timber Cove Pier Monday afternoon.
At 3:28 p.m. on February 29, 2016, South Lake Tahoe Police received a call of a drowning victim in the water at the Timber Cove Pier, just off Connolly Beach and behind the Tahoe Beach Retreat & Lodge.
When officers arrived, the found the local man deceased in a few feet of water.
Four arrested after high speed chase through Douglas County and South Lake Tahoe crime

Two different high speed chases through the Carson Valley and up Kingsbury Grade resulted in the arrest of two men and two women on Saturday, February 27, 2017.
At 3:10 p.m., a trooper from the Nevada Highway Patrol spotted a silver Mercedes-Benz with California plates going down U.S. 50 (Spooner Summit) at 85 mph. The driver failed to pull over for the trooper, instead turning South on Highway 395 towards Minden, Nev., at speeds in excess of 100 mph.
South Lake Tahoe gas station loses liquor license for 20 days
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/26/2016 - 4:05pmThe South Lake Tahoe Police Department and Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) posted a 20 day liquor license suspension notice at American Gas on Thursday, February 25. The suspension comes after an undercover operation began on November 12, 2015 after the owner of the station allegedly sold a glass pipe used for smoke methamphetamine.
The owner, Stefka Dimitrova, said she wasn't arrested for selling the pipe as the ABC report claims and didn't understand the suspension.
American Gas is located at 2762 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/26/2016 - 1:59pmOn Friday, February 26, 2016, administrators at South Tahoe High School received a tip that there was a potential threat to the students at the school during their lunch break.
South Lake Tahoe Police Officers responded to the school and conducted an investigation. Many parents were concerned after receiving messages from their children and seeing the extra law enforcement on campus.
"We have interviewed students and spoken with the one behind the situation," said SLTPD Lt. Brian Williams.

Two separate investigations are currently ongoing surrounding the death of Wright, both a homicide investigation and a narcotics investigation according to EDSO Lt. Jim Byers.

South Lake Tahoe man injured after being hit by car Tuesday night
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/10/2016 - 8:20pmA 52-year-old man from South Lake Tahoe was hit by a car after attempting to cross Highway 50 near the intersection with Heavenly Village Way on Tuesday, February 9. The unidentified man was not in a crosswalk and was crossing the street when traffic had a green light.
A 69-year-old Carson City man had just passed through the intersection when he struck the pedestrian.
The South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire departments both responded after getting a 911 call of a pedestrian versus vehicle accident at 8:26 p.m.

Two men sought in South Lake Tahoe murder

According to SLTPD, Wright and his girlfriend came to South Lake Tahoe from their home in Amador County to sell 100 pounds of marijuana from a room at the motelnwhich is located on Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Man killed after bringing 100 pounds of pot to South Lake Tahoe

Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/30/2016 - 10:39pmA man was shot and killed at the Beverly Lodge in South Lake Tahoe Saturday night. At about 7:42 p.m. on January 30, 2016, several people called 911 to report shots being fired at the motel which is located at 34780 Lake Tahoe Boulevard.
Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department responded immediately as did an EMS unit from the fire department. Upon arrival they found a man who had been shot, lying on the ground outside one of the rooms at the motel. He was transported to Barton Hospital where he died within a few minutes of arrival.
SLEDNET investigates sex trafficking ring in South Lake Tahoe; Three arrested

Law enforcement has been investigating complaints of prostitution, focused on individuals who conduct human trafficking through advertisements for escort services placed on websites such as www.backpage.com.

The plastic bag ban ordinance was amended to only affect grocery stores and not retail outlets. Former Mayor Hal Cole asked for the issue to be brought back before the council in October. "I thought we were only voting to bring the ordinance back for review, not to pass it," Cole said about his vote on October 15, 2013.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/07/2016 - 9:05pmSouth Lake Tahoe Police Officer Andy Eissinger is enjoying his new job as the Resource Officer at South Tahoe High, having moved into the position when Aaron Crawford retired at the end of the 2014-15 school year.
Eissinger said the first five months on the job have gone well and have been a nice break from being on patrol for the City the last eight years. He spends all eight hours of the day on the campus, interacting with students and dealing with issues that come up on a daily basis.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/02/2016 - 8:51amAs usual, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department bolstered our patrol staffing to meet the emergency response needs of our crowded City during the New Year celebration period. There were squads of officers patrolling the state line area, the Snow Globe festival and extra officers were also assigned to work patrol throughout the City. South Lake Tahoe was quite full with holiday revelers, and the number of calls for emergency police responses was consistent with recent past years. We are pleased to report there was a decrease in arrests as compared to last year.

Minors and alcohol the biggest issue for law enforcement at SnowGlobe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/31/2015 - 2:54pmThe three-day SnowGlobe music festival in South Lake Tahoe attracts a young crowd with many college, and high school students in attendance. They enjoy the electronic music with DJs that are heard throughout the venue on the three stages.
What is also popular at the event is drinking. The trained staff that serves alcohol at SnowGlobe knows what to look for in the way of fake identification which is evident of the citations issued over the first two days at the festival.
Heavy snow for the Sierras today

If you are traveling you can expect road controls from chains or snow tire requirements to chains or 4WD with snow tires.
