Tuesday: Numbers Fire south of Gardnerville now at 18,000 acres and 0% containment

The recommended evacuations for the Bodie Flats and Pineview areas have been lifted. Only residents are allowed to these areas. Please drive safely, watch for emergency vehicles, and be ready for possible future instructions in an ever-changing situation.
Multiple local, state, and federal agencies continue to work on containing the fire using dozers, hand crews, and aircraft.

Over the last four months, we have learned a lot about COVID-19 transmission, most notably that people who are infected but are asymptomatic or presymptomatic play an important part in community spread. The use of face coverings by everyone can limit the release of infected droplets when talking, coughing, and/or sneezing,
Multiple agencies working on fire east of Lake Tahoe in Douglas County
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/24/2020 - 2:59pmUpdate 6/25 at 9:00 a.m.: The Monarch Fire burning in Douglas County is now 1,794 acres. The fire is burning three miles south of Sierra Spirit Ranch in the Fish Springs/ Pinenut Creek Road area.
3:51 p.m. 6/24 update: From Douglas County: Several agencies including Bureau of Land Management, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, East Fork Fire, the US Forest Service and the Nevada Division of Forestry are currently responding to the Monarch Fire, a Brush fire in the Fish Springs Pinenut Creek Rd area. No structures are threatened at this time. No active road closures at this time.

5.8 magnitude earthquake near Lone Pine felt in South Lake Tahoe

There was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake near Lone Pine and Owen's Lake at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday with reports of it being felt in South Lake Tahoe. It was followed by 3.7, 3.6 and 4.7 aftershocks in the first 19 minutes after the main event.
There has been a lot of seismic activity from south of Topaz Lake and the Mammoth Lake area south to Tonopah over the last several weeks.

Homeless man severely burned in South Lake Tahoe fire
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/08/2020 - 5:00pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A homeless man suffered burns over 50 percent of his body after he fell asleep next to a warming/cooking fire in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday.
On June 4 at approximately 3:42 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to a call of a fire between Smart & Final and Christian Science Church on Lake Tahoe Boulevard.
The unidentified man was airlifted to the burn unit at UC Davis. His current condition is unknown at this time.

96th birthday celebration for WWII tail gunner in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/05/2020 - 9:13amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In September, Danny Francisco was able to fly in a a B-17, 75 years after his last flight, and now today, June 5, the community can honor and celebrate him on this 96th birthday.
Everyone is invited to "attend" his party by driving by with a cheer, a wave, an American flag, or any other birthday greeting. He will be at 2216 Dunlap Street in South Lake Tahoe from 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the public can join in a drive-by celebration of this WWII vet. The home is located a block from South Tahoe refuse.
Winners announced in Clean Tahoe and Jamie Anderson essay contest

Anderson was joined by a local teacher and writer to be the judges and read through all of the 30 entries. They said it was a tough choice but they were able to narrow them down to three winners and five honorable mention awards.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service releases 4,600 more Lahontan cuthroat into Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/28/2020 - 10:42amFollowing a successful three-day operation in October, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service this week released more than 4,600 Lahontan cutthroat trout into Lake Tahoe, helping to restore the iconic species to its native waters.
Lahontan cutthroat trout are the largest inland cutthroat trout in the world and the only trout native to Lake Tahoe.
The 4,645 fish from the Pilot Peak strain, originated at the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery Complex in Gardnerville and were released into the Nevada side of the lake this week.

Though taken far too soon, Sloan managed to live 10 lives in the span of his 47 years, punctuated by adventure, mischief, and quality time with his family and friends.
Suicides on the rise in South Lake Tahoe during COVID-19 crisis

There were none in January or February before the coronavirus hit.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District will be holding a regularly scheduled board meeting on Tuesday, May 26 at 5:00 p.m., followed by closed session.

City Council amends emergency ordinance that fined second homeowners
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/12/2020 - 11:23pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City Council voted Tuesday to amend their Emergency Order No. 1 from April that authorized administrative citations and fines of $1,000 for violations of the Governor's Stay at Home Order.
The City will not be fining second homeowners who visit their home in South Lake Tahoe but they will continue to fine those found renting out vacation homes until the Governor's ban on non-essential travel is amended.
Nominate a COVID-19 hero to win stay at Lake Tahoe vacation rental

Local boaters to be first allowed on Lake Tahoe; Future phases to allow out-of-area boats

On Friday the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) announced a phased approach to boating that discourages out-of-area visitation as part of state and local coordination on recreation guidelines for Lake Tahoe this season.

Dispute at Lake Tahoe construction site; One transported via Cal Star, other by ambulance
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/30/2020 - 10:11am5.1.20 UPDATE: In the morning hours of April 30, 2020, a group of construction workers were involved in a physical altercation at their job site at the new Tahoe Beach Club at the end of Kahle Drive. During the physical fight, a knife was produced and one male sustained major knife inflicted injuries to his head/face and he was transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno via Cal Star.
Another male suffered minor non-life threatening injuries and he was transported to Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.
Group started to match Lake Tahoe graduating seniors with gift-giving community members

In South Lake Tahoe, Baylee Inman decided to help out grads from all schools in Lake Tahoe, including homeschooled students and started a Facebook group Adopt-a-Senior Lake Tahoe to match the students with a gift-giving angel.

This time, Overland owners Brian and Kim Cohen had other businesses join in the fun.
Grass Roots gave away $10 gift cards, Heart Rock Herb & Spice Co. gave away spice samples, and Safeway at Bijou added two pallets of fresh fruits and vegetables to the mix.
"This is community effort at its finest," said Brian.

Birthday parties have become processions of cars parading past a celebrant’s home—people honking and waving, tossing candy and small gifts (for later disinfecting, then enjoying). And huge international celebrations like the 50th anniversary of Earth Day this week have moved online, giving room for individuals to celebrate and explore the conservation movement in new ways.
Portion of Barbara Avenue in South Lake Tahoe to close for Greenway project

This is the same area used for staging on the City of South Lake Tahoe's Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets project in 2019.
Jamie Anderson and Clean Tahoe team up for creative writing contest for local youth

Those ages 9-18 are invited to participate. $100 will be given to the winner from grades 4-5, $100 to the winner from grades 6-8, and $200 to the winner from grades 9-12.
The creative writing subject: It is the year 3030 and there is no such thing as trash.

Events Center approved by Douglas County Commissioners

In a 3-2 vote, the commissioners approved bond issuance, the final step in the approval process. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) had previously unanimously approved it.

South Lake Tahoe library offering story time and other digital services while closed
Submitted by paula on Sat, 04/04/2020 - 6:47pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though the El Dorado County library in South Lake Tahoe is closed to the public to comply with social distancing requirements, many services including storytime are offered online.
Library cards that are due to expire have been extended. All books due during their closed times will be accepted after reopening with no late fees. Their drop box is closed so no books can be dropped off.
All due dates have been extended to May 29, 2020.
Barton Health accepting the medical supplies in high demand and short supply

Barton Health is South Lake Tahoe is preparing for a potential influx of patients seeking care and is making every effort to ensure their supplies are adequate. They are working with regional health partners, new and existing vendors, local businesses and community members to procure the personal protective equipment (PPE) that may be needed to keep their healthcare workers and patients safe.

"We are not stopping cars unless it is for a traffic violation," stressed South Lake Tahoe Interim Police Chief Shannon Laney. "We are in protect mode for the community during this pandemic.
A rumor was started via social media, warning everyone that police were stopping all cars and identification was being checked.

Letter: Together in isolation

Our freedom to move, access to food and entertainment and, most importantly, our health. Like new parents discovering how much time they squandered in their previous lives, we will eventually come to terms with our isolated existence, only to return to our ordinary lives in a shock to our discovery. 4.5 earthquake centered just east of Lake Tahoe in Indian Hills
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/20/2020 - 6:48pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE Update 7:20 p.m. 3/20/20 - The University of Nevada Reno Seismological Lab has updated the magnitude of tonight's earthquake to 4.5. It centered near Lake Tahoe in Indian Hills, Nevada.
Since the initial earthquake, there have been four aftershocks at 2.0, 1.6, 1.6, 1.5 and more are expected.
The 4.5 was 4.3 mi SSE of Carson_City at a depth of 8.38 km.
These follow a series of small earthquakes in the same area at the beginning of the week.

No reports are in yet for the 6:33 p.m. earthquake and this story will be updated.

Robbery at Wells Fargo in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/14/2020 - 12:27pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is looking for the person who robbed the Wells Fargo Bank inside Raley's at Stateline on Saturday.
SLTPD responded to the call of a robbery at 11:02 a.m. on March 14. An unknown male had entered the store wearing a mask and headed to the bank on the east side. He demanded money from the teller and left with an undisclosed amount of cash and exited the store, heading toward Heavenly Village.
