SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For years the members of Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) have planned for a major legacy project for the community. The club has saved a portion of its fundraising proceeds for over a decade while searching for a major project which suits its mission to empower women and youth. The result of that search broke ground Wednesday - the renovation of the softball field at the South Tahoe Middle School. The socially distant ceremony was held with club members and partners in their endeavor.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be two new members of the South Lake Tahoe City Council after the November 3 election. In the coming weeks the pubic will have chances to hear from the candidates both via zoom, in print and possibly in person. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Internationally recognized psychiatrist, Joe Hibbeln, MD, has joined Barton Health’s team of expert mental and behavioral health providers. A board-certified physician, Dr. Hibbeln is working with patients over 18 years of age at Barton Community Health Center in South Lake Tahoe.

Since 1976, Choices for Children has been serving the South Lake Tahoe community with support for children, families, and childcare providers. They now have a new name, Catalyst Community, a name that emphasizes their dynamic commitment to community and change.

This is only the tip of the problem and managing our trash is key to prevent landfills being overflowed with our unnecessary waste.

Vail Resorts CEO, Rob Katz, and his wife, Elana Amsterdam announced the grant recipients of their previously announced $1.5 million donation to support youth organizations in cities surrounding Vail Resorts’ locations. Each of the 14 nonprofits receiving grants work to strengthen communities and support youth of color in urban centers across North America, including Boston, Baltimore, Chicago and Minneapolis, among others, as well as Lake Tahoe and Truckee.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, California – The Saturday Show of Support Series continues with a “Sound and Vision” celebration of Art and Music on Record Store Day at Keynote Used Records and Books, 2660 Lake Tahoe Blvd., in support of the Tahoe Art League. ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - The Zephyr Cove Elementary Parents Club and Whittell Boosters are reaching out to the community for support in the safe reopening of the two Douglas County Lake Schools on August 31.

Both of the schools will begin the 2020/2021 school year on Aug 31 with in person, daily instruction utilizing social distancing and other safety protocols.

Yesterday at approximately 4:20 p.m., Carson Tahoe Health wheeled its first COVID-positive, intubated patient, Linda McCain, out of the Regional Medical Center and back home to her family.

The Gardnerville resident had been in their care for 26 days.

Staff gathered in an Honor Walk to cheer on McCain, who had been using a ventilator to assist in breathing and fighting the severe respiratory illness, COVID-19. She was brought to tears by the support of Carson Tahoe throughout her stay, as well as during her farewell, as were several staff members.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Barton Foundation has awarded a record $100,000 in its annual Community Health Grant funding. This is in addition to more than $170,000 in grants given to local families and individuals from its COVID-19 Response Fund.

The 13 Lake Tahoe-based organizations that were awarded share Barton Health’s commitment to addressing the most urgent health needs in the area: mental and behavioral health, substance use, and access to care.

The organizations selected for a Community Health Grant serve the area’s most vulnerable populations and those in need:

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In just five years, the Tahoe Women’s Community Fund has been able to give $328,000 back to the community through 37 different non-profits on the South Shore.

Formed in 2015, the collective giving organization is able to support nonprofits that address pressing issues facing the community through a simple grant process. In 2020 they are awarding their most yet, $125,000.

By motor or by paddle, the experience of boating on Lake Tahoe is like none other. Hovering over its crystal clear shallows and unfathomable depths inspires awe, and the surrounding mountains and forests combine for a breathtaking experience. Given this, it is understandable that boating is both a major part of Tahoe’s culture and its regional economy.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It has been a wild two weeks for the Howard family, ever since ten-year-old Maeson entered the UC Davis Children’s Hospital with what appeared to be a COVID-19-releated multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C), or Kawasaki disease.

Maeson Howard is on the road to recovery and back in his Christmas Valley home with his parents and sister.

A $45,000 grant from the Tahoe Fund has allowed the nonprofit Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) to begin a trail improvement project that will reconstruct sections of the Upper Tyrolian Trail in Incline Village. The project is designed to enhance the user experience, make critical trail connections, rehabilitate and restore old logging roads to reduce erosion and improve lake clarity. It is expected to be completed by the end of October 2020.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Join volunteers who are helping to clean up South Lake Tahoe, one region at a time. There are three clean up Sundays scheduled starting with August 9. #IRunWithMaud, a local anti-racism group, will be cleaning Sierra Boulevard from Barbara Avenue to US50 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Their goal is to help underserved areas by helping to keep them trash free.

A group of area residents will be driving to Minden to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement on Saturday, August 8. Organizers are inviting everyone to caravan to the protest being held in Minden to protest Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley's comments made last week.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There has been an outpouring of concern for 10-year-old Maeson Howard who is currently in the UC Davis Children’s Hospital fighting multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) or Kawasaki disease. Since we shared Maeson's story on Monday, many had asked how they can help the family. Maeson attends Lake Tahoe Environmental Magnet School and lives with his parents and sister in Christmas Valley.

And who told him he has the authority to ignore 911 emergency calls – from the Douglas County Library! – because he’s upset about a draft statement on diversity that mentioned Black Lives Matter?
