A free, all day workshop about teaching science to children will be held at the UC Davis Tahoe Center for Environmental Science on January 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

They will present an overview of the Next Generation Science Standards, tips for becoming a better science teacher, sample activities to present the new standards, as well as tie-dying the scientific way.

1980 South Tahoe High graduate Dr. Graham Kent from the UNR Seismological Laboratory will give a presentation on ALERT Tahoe in Incline Village on Thursday, January 8.

ALERT Tahoe is a new, one-of-a-kind, fire camera and multi-hazard tracking system that includes smoke investigation, prescribed fire oversight, wildfire tracking, Earthquake Early Warning, and monitoring of extreme weather events. A prototype of the fire camera system is functioning, scoring early successes during the summer of 2014.

Dr. Kent will present on the existing and planned camera system.

Dr. Simon Hook from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) will be in Lake Tahoe on November 13 to discuss his work at the lake and around the Earth using satellite measurements of the surface temperature.

By the end of the century Lake Tahoe summers may be two months longer than they were in the 1960s and the maximum temperatures may have risen by 8 degrees F. Those were part of the predictions released in the State of the Lake 2014 report.

Data collected over the last 50 years, combined with the monitoring of Lake Tahoe during the 12 months of 2013, was presented at Thursday's unveiling of the report at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences (TERC) in Incline Village by Director Geoff Schladow.

Physicians are in high demand, but not just from patients. With an impending physician shortage and more job competition, medical administrators and recruiters will spend hours attending meetings, networking, and recruiting to hire top-notch physicians.

In a 2012 study, the Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (ASPR) estimated that physician recruitment costs between $75,000 and $90,000 per doctor. This does not include the time and effort to set up a medical practice and then to retain a physician.

Children and their families are invited by U.C. Davis to visit their Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences on Saturday, August 9 for a day of hand's on activities.

The 15th annual event is free and sponsored by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center. Children's Environmental Science Day includes more than 30 interactive science activities hosted by local organizations, all aimed at children ages 6 and up.

Why do bad things seem to stick in our minds so much longer than the good things? Is there anything we can do about it? Dr. Alison Ledgerwood will hold a lecture on Thursday Evening, July 17th at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Arts. Her behavioral science research suggests that negative thoughts are cognitively “stickier” than positive ones— but with some effort, it seems we can retrain our brains to focus on the upsides.

Tahoe’s rugged landscape and mild summer temperatures attract a mountain of sports events. From large events such as America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride and the Lake Tahoe Marathon to local favorites like the Tahoe Kids Triathlon, there is sports event for every ability and age group. Barton Health’s medical staff is gearing up for many of these events, but not just to compete.

If the showroom overflowing with screaming and happy fans is any indication, the Tahoe Arts Project's Dancing with the Tahoe Stars was a success.

Ten couples performed numbers in front of a panel of judges: Marcia Sarosik, Paul Middlebrook and Don Bosson. MC Dreu Murin guided the evening of entertainment from the dancers to performances by Marcia Sarosik Dance Studio, South Tahoe High Performing Arts and Forever Dance.

Ten local dancers will hit the stage for the Tahoe Arts Project's 2nd Annual Dancing With the Tahoe Stars on March 8 at 6:30 pm.

The 2014 monthly lecture series from UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center begins January 28 with a presentation on the dangers of radon. Eric Matus of the Nevada Radiation Control Program will lead a public lecture titled “Radon: What you don’t know could hurt you” beginning at 6 p.m. at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences.

Are you, or do you know, a high school student that is interested in learning more about science? Would you like to add a great experience onto your college resume while having a great time?

High school students interested in science can apply for the Youth Science Institute (YSI) program by January 10th, 2014. This afterschool program is offered on Wednesday evenings from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences in Incline Village beginning January 22nd and running through May, 2014.

UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center’s monthly lecture series continues with a presentation on water rights at Pyramid Lake on Thursday, November 14. Dr. Kate Berry, Professor of Geography at the University of Nevada, Reno, will discuss her research at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences.

Dr. Selina Wang of the UC Davis Olive Center will present her research into olive oil quality standards as well as new developments at the Olive Center.

Join Dr. Sally Rogers, UC Davis MIND Institute, for a presentation on the latest findings on effects of intervention on the youngest children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) on Thursday, August 22 at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences.

This lecture will discuss the need for intervention models for younger and younger children being identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and the effects of interventions that focus on this age group.

UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center releases the annual Lake Tahoe: State of the Lake Report on Wednesday, August 7. Lake Tahoe, climate change and how global warming affects the lake will be the subject of a discussion by renowned limnologist Dr. Charles Goldman Friday, 6 p.m. June 7 at the Sierra Nevada College campus in Incline Village.

UC Davis research at Lake Tahoe began with Dr. Goldman. In 1959, he formed the Tahoe Research Group and began regularly monitoring Lake Tahoe. Goldman successfully combined effective research and social action with his pioneering studies of lake eutrophication (the dense growth of algae and other organisms).

Art and science collide in April at the Lake Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences with a lecture and display of paintings that chronicle Anthropocene, the beginning of the fossil fuel era that sprouted in the late 1700s.

Migratory birds are commonly thought of as only summer visitors to the northern latitudes, but there are some migratory birds that can only be found in the Lake Tahoe area during winter.

There are also birds that have lost their way and end up in unexpected areas during the winter. Learn what visiting birds to look for in winter, where they came from, and why winter is a good time for them to be in the area, whether you are searching in the Tahoe Basin, Sierra Valley, or Carson Valley.
