Police investigation underway after black doll found hanging in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is investigating a doll that was hanging from a power line in the Tahoe Sierra neighborhood on Tuesday.

When SLTPD officers arrived at the corner of Rose and Lodi Avenues they found a black doll hanging with a heavy string around its neck. With the assistance of Liberty Utilities, the doll was quickly removed.

Summer fire restrictions around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Fire season is upon us and many restrictions are now in effect where outdoor burning, campfires, and fire pits are concerned. 2020 started out with the driest February on record since the 1850s, and there is an increased fire danger posed by dead grass and hotter, drier conditions in the region.

It is important to understand that with all of the different fire areas around Lake Tahoe, there are different rules.

Fire at Van Sickle Bi-State Park in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Multiple agencies responded to a report of a wildfire at Van Sickle Bi-State Park in South Lake Tahoe Friday afternoon about 5:00 p.m.

They were able to jump on the fire quickly, leaving less than 1/4 acre burned.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, Lake Valley Fire Protection District, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, CAL FIRE Amador-El Dorado Unit and the U.S. Forest Service all responded.

Firefighters have completed a hose lay and hand line around the fire and will remain on the scene to mop it up.

The cause is under investigation.

Illegal campfire at historic site in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Firefighters from the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) responded to the report of another illegal campfire in Lake Tahoe, this time at the Tallac Historic Site on June 17.

LTBMU Engine 341 responded and after a careful inspection, the campfire was declared a wildfire named "The Heritage Fire."

The illegal campfire was constructed on top of a dry stump within the foundation of a historic feature at Tallac Point near Kiva Beach.

City to hold virtual town hall on policing in South Lake Tahoe

Deceased male found at Pope Beach in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Monday, June 15, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) was notified about a possible suicidal person after a note was found by the reporting party.

EDSO deputies were able to use the man's cell phone to provide a GPS location, leading them to the Pope Beach area of South Lake Tahoe.

Upon arrival, deputies located a deceased male.

This is an active investigation and no other information is available.

96th birthday celebration for WWII tail gunner in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In September, Danny Francisco was able to fly in a a B-17, 75 years after his last flight, and now today, June 5, the community can honor and celebrate him on this 96th birthday.

Everyone is invited to "attend" his party by driving by with a cheer, a wave, an American flag, or any other birthday greeting. He will be at 2216 Dunlap Street in South Lake Tahoe from 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the public can join in a drive-by celebration of this WWII vet. The home is located a block from South Tahoe refuse.

COVID-19 case update for counties around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County health department has announced four new cases of COVID-19 for the county, three in the Lake Tahoe region, one in El Dorado Hills.

This brings the total of cases in the county to 102. There have been no new recoveries, leaving 34 active cases. The only hospitalization at time is a patient in the ICU county-wide.

The new cases are two men and two women, three aged 18-49 years old and one aged 50-64.

179 additional tests were given.

COVID-19 case update for counties around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County public health officials announced two new confirmed cases in the county, bringing the total COVID-19 cases to 98. The new ones are both male, one from the Lake Tahoe region and the other from El Dorado Hills, one under the age of 17, one in the 18-49 age group.

70 more tests were given, with 6,527 now administered.

There were no new recoveries and no new hospitalizations.

There have been 42 cases in the Lake Tahoe area (including South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Strawberry, and Tahoma).

Peaceful candlelight vigil held in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There have been public gatherings across the country in response to the death of George Floyd on May 25 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, some peaceful, some turning into riots.

On Saturday, May 30, a peaceful candlelight vigil was held at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe to highlight "Black Lives Matter" and to raise awareness of racial injustice.

Sunny with above average temperatures this week in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Unusually warm temperatures are forecast Tuesday through Friday of this week as strong high pressure builds over the region and brings with it summer-like heat to the region much of this week with record highs possible. Afternoon thunderstorms could form starting Tuesday, mainly along high terrain. Storms look to become more widespread late week. Stronger winds, a few showers, and more seasonable temperatures (the 60s) are projected next weekend as low-pressure approaches from the Pacific, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Reno.

Work underway on Al Tahoe Safety and Mobility Project in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you've been driving through town lately you've most likely noticed the road work on Al Tahoe Boulevard.

After a restriping/lane change pilot project in 2017 that reconfigured two of the four vehicle travel lanes and added buffered bike lanes on Al Tahoe Blvd., the rest of the project has now begun. New TAHOE housing program in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Saint Joseph Community Land Trust (SJCLT) has announced a new program that seeks to preserve existing housing stock for permanently affordable, full-time homes for Tahoe Basin employees and residents. It is called the TAHOE (Tahoe Affordable Home Ownership Enabling) program.

TAHOE has been created to do three things:

1. Provide assistance to income-qualified households searching for a home in the Tahoe Basin;
2. Enable SJCLT to purchase available homes to be made available to income-qualified Tahoe Basin employees or full-time residents;

Fire quickly put out near Van Sickle Bi-State Park in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What appears to have been a cooking fire that got away in the forest near Van Sickle Bi-State Park on Saturday brought out a full response from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue with assistance from Tahoe Douglas Fire, Lake Valley Fire, Cal Fire, and the U.S. Forest Service.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Jay Manning was driving on Lake Tahoe Boulevard near Stateline when he noticed smoke from the park just after 12:30 p.m. on May 16. At that same time, a ranger from the park called into 911 to report a fire.

USFS lifts closures at recreation sites around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) said the order to close Lake Tahoe recreation sites will expire Friday at midnight and won't be extended.

Regional developed recreation site and South Shore Recreation Corridor will be open starting May 16 according to Lisa Herron of LTBMU.

The closures were to keep in line with local, state and federal regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

City Council amends emergency ordinance that fined second homeowners

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City Council voted Tuesday to amend their Emergency Order No. 1 from April that authorized administrative citations and fines of $1,000 for violations of the Governor's Stay at Home Order.

The City will not be fining second homeowners who visit their home in South Lake Tahoe but they will continue to fine those found renting out vacation homes until the Governor's ban on non-essential travel is amended.

Overland Meat to hold its final food giveaway in South Lake Tahoe

The time is here to place yellow jacket traps out in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It still isn't too late to prevent pesky yellow jacket interruptions of July and August picnics and outside dinners in Lake Tahoe. Now is the time to prepare by placing traps for the queens as they start to emerge from their winter hibernation.

The queens are the only bee colony member to hibernate in the winter. She emerges in spring and begins to look for a suitable place to build a nest and begin her new colony. By the end of summer one colony can have 4,000 to 5,000 yellow jackets.

Seasonal dog closure at Upper Truckee Marsh in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual closure of the Upper Truckee Marsh to dogs is underway and will last through July 31. Each year the California Tahoe Conservancy closes the marsh to dogs, both on and off-leash, to protect sensitive habitats for birds and other wildlife during breeding season.

The Conservancy-owned Cove East property, west of the Upper Truckee River, remains open for year-round leashed dog access. Beginning August 1, dogs will again be permitted access to the Upper Truckee Marsh, provided they are on leash.

Semi-truck rollover at the Y in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A semi-truck heading from Oakland, California to Dayton, Nevada rolled over at the Y in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning.

At 11:04 a.m., South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire Rescue Departments responded to the intersection of US50 and Emerald Bay Road to a call of a tractor-trailer rollover.

According to South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Shannon Laney, the driver of the semi was heading northbound on Emerald Bay Road when he took the right turn to go east on US50/Lake Tahoe Boulevard at a faster speed than the turn allows.

El Dorado County extends ban of all nonessential travel to Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The current order restricting travel into the Lake Tahoe Basin has been extended by the El Dorado County Public Health Officer Dr. Nancy Williams.

Originally set to expire on April 30, the ban's extension begins at 12:01 a.m. May 1.

The ban is for all nonessential travel into the El Dorado County portion of the Lake Tahoe Basin from outside the basin. Dr. Williams will review the current situation with local health care professionals at least every 14 days.

El Dorado County lifts orders but California stay-at-home orders still in place

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One layer of stay-at-home orders has been lifted for El Dorado County as its Public Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams, has lifted her stay-at-home directive effective April 30, the original date it was to be lifted when set on March 19.

This doesn't mean that South Lake Tahoe and the county are open for business though as the State's order is still in effect.

"We are requesting from the Governor that we [South Lake Tahoe] can move towards reopening in a phased approach with attention paid to his six guidelines," said South Lake Tahoe Mayor Jason Collin.

Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra's virtual Elegant Evening a success

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many nonprofits have had to cancel their fundraisers due to the coronavirus, but the ladies of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club in South Lake Tahoe weren't going to let the virus stop them.

Their 31t annual Elegant Evening was slated to be held at Harrah's Tahoe on April 18 with a sit-down dinner, live music, and dancing, raffle, and auction. The venue closed and restrictions on meeting in groups of over 10 people were created, so what do you do with an event that brings together 500 community members?

Events Center approved by Douglas County Commissioners

STATELINE, Nev. - In what has been a hotly debated topic for months between the five Douglas County Board of Commissioners and members of the public, the Tahoe South Events Center passed the final hurdle Thursday. In a 3-2 vote, the commissioners approved bond issuance, the final step in the approval process. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) had previously unanimously approved it.

New reflective traffic lights installed in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - You may have noticed stoplights along Lake Tahoe Boulevard have been changed over the past several days. Crews from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) installed the new light backplates not only in South Lake Tahoe but across the state to increase the visibility of the signals.

Sex offender arrested on child pornography charges in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Nicholas A. Rumble, a 30-year-old man from South Lake Tahoe, has been arrested after a year-long investigation into allegations of possession of child pornography.

Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) tracked Rumble via his ankle monitor to the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless Warm Room on Thursday, April 9 where he was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

New COVID-19 cases for all counties surrounding Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There has been one more person who tested positive for COVID-19 in the South Lake Tahoe area over the weekend, bringing the total to 10. In El Dorado County there are now 25 positive cases.

Fundraiser set up for those out of work due to business closures in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With a large number of South Lake Tahoe employees currently out of work due to closures mandated by the fight against the coronavirus, a South Lake Tahoe woman has set up a fundraiser to help those financially hurt the most.

Roberta Hainline, housekeeping manager with Vacasa, was concerned after she had to lay off her entire staff of 22.

"I know that all of those people that lost their jobs live paycheck to paycheck. Even though they are eligible for unemployment, the need is immediate," said Hainline, who was also furloughed.

Winter Storm Warning until Monday for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Winter Storm Warning is in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin until noon on Monday, April 6. At 10:00 a.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said to expect heavy snow with additional snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches, except 1 to 3 feet above 7000 feet. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph in the lower elevations and up to 90 mph over Sierra ridges.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County has created a new dashboard for COVID-19 cases and it shows South Lake Tahoe leads all areas with confirmed cases.

There are 7 confirmed cases in the South Lake Tahoe region, 3 in Placerville, 4 in El Dorado Hills with the County's other 5 cases spread around the west slope.

797 people have been tested with 648 of those coming back negative for the virus. 130 are still pending.

El Dorado County COVID-19: Three new cases in county including South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County has announced three new COVID-19 cases. As of 4:45 p.m. Friday, March 27, 12 people have tested positive for the virus. Health officials said the virus has been identified in both the West Slope and South Lake Tahoe areas.

There have been no numbers released on how many confirmed cases are in each area.

The best way to prevent the spread is to stay inside, and if going to an essential service such as the grocery store, maintain a distance of at least six feet from others.

Barton Foundation spearheading homemade face mask project in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The fact that medical workers in the United States are in need of face masks to protect them against COVID-19 has been well-publicized in the media.

To help with an anticipated need at Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, the Barton Foundation has created a homemade face mask sewing project after members of the community reached out to see how they could help.

Staff researched the best safety options and there are three masks volunteers can use, one with a filter and two simpler versions.

TRPA approves 6,000 seat Tahoe South Event Center

STATELINE, Nev. - The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) board today unanimously approved the Tahoe Douglas Visitor’s Authority Tahoe South Event Center planned for the parking lot area of Montbleu Casino Resort in Stateline. Edgewood Tahoe has donated the 13.3 acres at the corner of Lake Parkway and Highway 50 needed for the center.

Senior Citizen services and store hours in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The threat of the novel coronavirus and COVID-19 is a scary one for all people, especially the more vulnerable citizens of the community including senior citizens.

The South Lake Tahoe Senior Center is closed but nutrition services are being provided on a "to go" basis. Those 60 and older can stop by Monday through Friday between 11:00 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. and get a hot meal to go for a $3 suggested donation. Their Meals on Wheels program serves about 80 seniors with hot meals delivered Monday through Friday.
