Red flag warnings in place for Lake Tahoe; Fire weather concerns
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/06/2017 - 10:22amThe National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Lake Tahoe area from 2:00 p.m. Wednesday to 8:00 p.m. Thursday.
Thunderstorms with potentially dangerous lightening strikes are forecast along with heavy rain and possible flash flooding.
A negatively tilted trough is setting the stage for a widespread outbreak of thunderstorms this afternoon through Thursday from the northern Sierra and far western Nevada to the Oregon border.
Slinkard Fire near Topaz now at 49 percent contained; 9.091 acres burned
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/04/2017 - 4:51pmThe Slinkard Fire is currently located on the west slope of Antelope Valley, west of Topaz Lake and eight miles north of Walker, Calif. After being started by lightning on August 29, it has burned through cheat grass, sagebrush and pinyon/juniper.
418 firefighting crew members are working the fire which is located in Alpine and Mono counties in California and Douglas County in Nevada.

starting today according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Storms this afternoon will again be mainly over the Sierra, potentially becoming more widespread this weekend into early next week but predictability remains about average. Flash flooding will become more of a threat late this weekend and into early next week. Temperatures through the weekend will remain above normal with weak afternoon breezes each afternoon.

Douglas County declared disaster area after Preacher Fire scorches 4,651 acres
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/25/2017 - 7:08pmDouglas County Board of Commissioners signed a Disaster Declaration today due to the lightning caused Preacher Fire which is burning seven miles southeast of Gardnerville.
The fire is currently estimated at 4,651 acres as of 6:00 p.m. on July 25. It is being managed at this time by Sierra Front Type 3 Incident Management Team (IMT) with support from East Fork Fire Protection District and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Free tree removal for low-income El Dorado County seniors
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/20/2017 - 9:24pmWith tree mortality issues so prevalent in the Sierra, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors today launched a Tree Removal Grant Program for low-income seniors.
“The tree mortality issues in our county remain very serious. We’re just happy to have this program available to assist private homeowners, especially our seniors with limited income, who have no other means to remove dead or dying trees from threatening damage to their homes,” said District IV Supervisor, Michael Ranalli.
Free chipping service for city and county residents
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/18/2017 - 6:17pmResidents of South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado county, Fallen Leaf Lake and Alpine County are encouraged to take advantage of the free curbside chipping service offered by the Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD).
The free service will be offered through October, weather permitting.
Homeowners can work on their defensible space by removing limbs and slash on their property, then the chipping crew will come by and collect it, then convert into wood chips.
This action reduces flammable vegetation and helps homeowners protect their property from the threat of wildfire.
Angora Fire 10 years later: Water suppliers complete $1.6M in water infrastructure projects

Quagga mussels found on boat during inspection near Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/26/2017 - 3:23pmThe watercraft inspection spots around Lake Tahoe once again proved their valuable service when a boat at the Alpine Meadows station was found to have quagga mussels on board May 14.
The boat was quarantined for several days and Tahoe Resource Conservation District staff performed multiple decontaminations to ensure all invasive species were removed before the boat was released to the owner.
Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board voted to increase prevention methods by requiring motorists towing boats to remove drain plugs from their watercraft after leaving the lake.
Wildfire Awareness Month: Remembering Angora
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/18/2017 - 3:36pmThis June is wildfire awareness month at Lake Tahoe. It also marks the 10th anniversary of the Angora Fire, the most destructive wildland fire in memory at Tahoe.
An illegal and abandoned campfire started the Angora Fire on June 24, 2007. The fire quickly spread toward Meyers, stoked by strong winds and forests overgrown with hazardous fuels. In a few days, the fire burned 3,100 acres and destroyed 254 homes.
Almost 1,500 lbs of trash collected during Clean Tahoe's “Spring Clean”event

On Saturday May 6th, 118 volunteers scoured South Tahoe neighborhoods to help clean it up and kick off the summer with a litter-free town. The groups covered fifteen different locations and gathered 1,484 pounds of trash and debris from our environment.

TrapBags installed along Carson River to prevent flooding in Douglas County
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/05/2017 - 9:04pmA temporary levee-like barrier has been placed along the East Fork of the Carson River near the Aspen Mobile Home Park in anticipation of flooding as the snow continues to melt in the Sierra.
Douglas County, Carson Valley Conservation District and the mobile home park worked together to get on a temporary fix called "TrapBag." 600 feet of these barriers were installed along the river.
Roadwork to cause delays on Kingsbury Grade for next two months
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/01/2017 - 6:41pmDirt and debris will be removed from the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade from May 1 to June 30, and the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is cautioning drivers that they may face delays from 5-minutes to 30-minutes.
NDOT contractor Q&D will be removing debris from eroded roadside slopes and drainages Mondays through Fridays, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Most travel delays are expected to average under five minutes.
The loose dirt and debris will be removed from 15 roadside slopes along the grade.

The People's Climate Change March in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, April 29 will bring together families and community members concerned with protection of climate and the environment, beginning at Lakeview Commons at 10:00 a.m.
From the Commons, marchers will head over to Bijou Park for the local Earth Day celebration where presentations will take place.
Kingsbury Grade reopens
Submitted by paula on Sat, 04/08/2017 - 4:59pmKingsbury Grade (State Route 207) reopened at 4:30 p.m. Saturday after closing Friday afternoon to allow crews to remove a slide and remove trees and boulders.
Rockfall mitigation experts spent Saturday bringing down boulders from the top of a roadside slope on Kingsbury Grade. Heavy precipitation had loosened not only the boulders, but trees as well.
The roadway is now clear and traffic is moving from the Carson Valley to Lake Tahoe. Nevada Department of Transportion (NDOT) and their contractor Q&D Construction made repairs to an eroding roadside slope and extensive rockfall.
Kingsbury Grade closed indefinitely after rocks and dirt slide onto road
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/07/2017 - 9:38am4:15 p.m. update: Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207) will remain closed indefinitely on the Carson Valley side of the road as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) continues safety evaluation and removal of major rockfall.
The highway was closed early Friday afternoon as NDOT and contractor Q&D Construction removed loose trees and earth from a roadside slope to help reduce rock and mud fall onto the highway. The slope had slid approximately one foot within the past 24 hours, posing the threat of bringing mud, rock and debris across the highway.

22 tons of cocaine worth $577.5 million seized by U.S. Coast Guard in 26 days
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/31/2017 - 10:46pmSAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The U.S. Coast Guard unloaded 22 tons of seized cocaine this week, six in San Diego, 16 in Florida. The wholesale value of the cocaine is about $577.5 million.
The crew of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Stratton offloaded the cocaine in San Diego during a media event Friday. Several cutters in the Eastern Pacific Ocean area seized the drugs mid-January through February.
The drugs were intercepted in international waters off the coast of Central and South America.

Reno man charged in threats against Carson City judge after matching DNA confirmed
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/21/2017 - 6:16pmThe man believed to be responsible for shooting at and attempting to firebomb the home of a Carson City judge and sending him a threatening Christmas card in the mail has been formally charged for the crimes, officials announced Tuesday.
Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury announced Reno area resident Jason Aston, 74, is charged with fourth-degree arson, aggravated stalking and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. His bail is set at $250,000 cash.

Arrests made in El Dorado County human trafficking operation
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/18/2017 - 12:58amAn undercover operation targeting human trafficking and prostitution in Placerville was conducted on March 3, resulting in several arrests.
Detectives from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office researched ads on dating websites regarding escorts, made contact with them via phone and set up dates at a local motel. During the operation six female escorts responded to the room, all from out of the area. Three were arrested and booked into jail, two were cited with a promise to appear and one was released to victim services.

This substance is glorified as a method to enhance dining experiences, celebrations, entertainment, sporting events, and holidays. Alcohol itself is not the problem. A drink to accompany a meal or celebratory time is a much different choice than to completely dissociate from reality and manipulate others to achieve a “good time.”
Carson Valley Middle School student arrested for threatening to "shoot up the school"

At 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 16, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office received a call after a concerned parent intercepted the threatening message sent to their child. Deputies responded to the Indian Hills residence of the reporting party and met with the parent to examine the phone in which the threat was received.

Controversy brewing as City and County reps on Tahoe Conservancy Board resign
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/15/2017 - 6:33pmFriday's board meeting of the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) was delayed almost two hours due to ice on the road near near Zephyr Cove, causing it to close, and those weren't the only icy conditions on the South Shore that day.
The other ice could be felt during the meeting as conflict of interest, ethics, integrity, suspicious actions and lack of transparency were the theme of the day.
All three items on the agenda Friday were placed there amid a stressed relationship between the City of South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County and Patrick Wright, the Executive Director of the CTC.
Traffic stuck for hours at Echo Summit due to avalanche and safety concerns
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/10/2017 - 8:30pmAfter drivers were stuck on both sides of Echo Summit starting at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Caltrans has closed the highway as of 7:05 p.m. Eastbound traffic is being stopped at the Sly Park, and westbound in Meyers. Unsafe driving conditions due to heavy snow and the threat of avalanches have been a concern all day.
As of 7:00 p.m., cars hadn't moved much. For a short time at 4:00 p.m. Caltrans was attempting escorted travel from Meyers heading west before closing down the highway.
After rain, heavy snow expected through Thursday in South Lake Tahoe

The very dynamic and strong system passing over the Sierra also created some lightning and thunder overnight and on Sunday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno told South Tahoe Now that it is very common with a strong storm like this to see lightening.

Winter storm, high wind and flood warnings for Lake Tahoe Basin

The National Weather Service has issued three warnings for the Lake Tahoe Basin:
High Wind Warning in effect until Thursday at 4:00 p.m. Winds will be from the southwest 25 TO 40 mph with gusts 65-70 mph. Gust over 80 mph likely in wind prone areas around Reno, Carson City and Minden. Sierra ridge gusts up to 130 mph. Waves on the lake will be 3 to 7 feet.
Late night vote in Washington brings $415 million to Lake Tahoe

The decision brought cheers from many local agencies, including the League to Save lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

Washoe County teen arrested for making numerous 911 calls

Between November 12, 2016 and November 29, 2016, the Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received calls from the Sun Valley area, including reports of mass murder, shoot-outs in the street, and a bomb threat to a local elementary school.

SLTPD aiding in investigation of man involved in twenty-hour standoff in Cameron Park

A 911 call about a possible domestic violence situation in an apartment on La Canada Drive was received by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office dispatch at 6:10 a.m. on Thursday, November 17. According to the reporting party, there was an armed man holding a woman and her baby against their will inside the apartment.

US Coast Guard has record year in drug seizures - $5.6 billion worth
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/27/2016 - 7:21pmWith a growing cocaine problem, not only in South Lake Tahoe but in the whole country, the U.S Coastguard and their interagency partners are being kept busy seizing the drug from ships in the Pacific Ocean headed to the United States.
The Coast Guard broke records over the last 12 months by removing more than 416,000 pounds of cocaine worth over $5.6 billion from boats and ships. Their previous record was 367,700 pounds seized in 2008.
South Lake Tahoe council candidates share their views on sustainability and climate issues
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/18/2016 - 10:19pmThe South Lake Tahoe chapter of the Citizen's Climate Lobby recently asked all ten of the candidates their views on climate change, green buildings and our carbon footprint and how they can make a change if elected.
The Citizen's Climate Lobby is an organization focused on national policies to address climate change, and the South Lake Tahoe chapter is one of 354 in the United States and abroad.
Patricia Sussman of the local chapter said just five of the candidates responded to their questions.
Little Valley Fire is now 55% contained, 3,400 acres burned
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/15/2016 - 5:55pm10/16/16 update 7:00PM - The Little Valley Fire is holding at 3,400 acres with 55 percent containment. 667 personnel remain on the incident. More rain forecast tonight which will aid in extinguishing the fire which started on Friday.
22 residences and 17-outbuildings were destroyed with 480 homes saved in the direct vicinity of the fire. Multiple structures remain under threat until 100-percent containment has been achieved.

10:00PM update - Current acreage burned in the Little Valley Fire has been revised at 3,400 acres with 20 percent containment this evening.
I-580 and Eastlake reopen as Little Valley Fire burns 2,000 acres; 19 homes burn
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/14/2016 - 7:31amUPDATE 1:00PM 10/15/16: The Little Valley Fire in Washoe Valley has now burned 3,460 acres with 5 percent containment. Four injuries due to smoke inhalation have been reported.
The Sierra Front Type III Incident Management Team reports that 22 residences and 17-outbuildings have been destroyed. 500 structures are still under threat.
Interstate 580 is open in both directions, as is old U.S. Highway 395. Franktown Road, the area where most of the home damage is, remains closed.
Public meeting to cover efforts combating aquatic invasive weeds in Tahoe Keys

This summer,the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) has been both combating aquatic invasive weeds while also testing out methods for future eradication of the pesky plants from their channels. They will be hosting a public meeting to update the community on their ongoing efforts on Tuesday, November 1 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the South Tahoe Public Utility District board room.
