South Tahoe High graduate, Kyle Smaine made his first appearance at world championships count on Thursday night by winning the gold for men's halfpipe in Austria. The 23-year old won the 2015 FIS Freestyle Ski & Snowboard World Championships with a Left-side 1260 tail; Right-side 1080 tail; Switch 720 opposite safety; Right-side 900 high mute; Right-side 900 truck driver.

He skies for Sierra at Tahoe, just as do Olympians Maddie Bowman, Jamie Anderson and Hannah Teter.

STAR donates to South Lake Tahoe non-profits this winter

The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) gave a total of $15,000 to three area non-profits this holiday season to feed families as well as secure essential upgrades to community centers/programs.

STAR gifted $5,000 to Christmas Cheer All Year’s Food for Families, which resulted in $11,400 worth of fresh food from Raleys supermarket. Through this initiative Raleys was able to purchase items at wholesale while selecting various items that were in more demand. For every $1 donated to Christmas Cheer results in more than $2 worth of food.

Heavenly opens new terrain for holiday weekend

Vail Resorts announced the opening of the Terrain Park and Mombo Trail just in time for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend, one of the biggest winter weekends in South Lake Tahoe.

Groove Park is Heavenly’s most popular progression park, providing an ideal learning environment for beginners with a variety of features including five rails, one bonk and two jumps.

Tahoe Douglas Fire's Mark Novak takes Chief job in Vail, Colorado

Mark A. Novak, the current assistant chief for the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, has been named to head the Vail Fire Department.

Novak, 48, will begin full-time employment with the town on Feb. 2. He was selected from a field of 105 candidates during a national search process which included six finalists.

South Lake Tahoe's Sho Kashima named to 2015 US Freestyle Moguls Team

Sho Kashima of South Lake Tahoe has spent the off-season recovering from injuries and is preparing for the 2015 US Freestyle Moguls team.

The team was named this week in advance of the Dec. 13 FIS Freestyle World Cup season opener in Ruka, Finland. Kashima, who skis for Heavenly, expects to be able to join the team mid-season. According to his Facebook and Instagram pages he is working hard on rehabilitation.

Olympian Jamie Anderson hosts fundraiser for the Sugar Pine Foundation

South Lake Tahoe's Golden Girl Jamie Anderson is throwing a party in her hometown to help raise money for the sugar pine trees.

On Thursday, November 6, Jamie in presenting "Golden Experience" at Azul Latin Kitchen in the Heavenly Village from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. She will talk about her trip to Socchi, Russia and the winning of a gold medal.

The Sugar Pine Foundation will be auctioning off some snowboard gear signed by Jamie, Vail lift tickets and winter themed art.

Tickets $20 per person include a poster of Jamie snowboarding. Kids are free.

Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar resorts looking for 3,400 seasonal employees

More than 3,400 seasonal employees are needed by Vail Resorts for the upcoming ski season at their Lake Tahoe resorts Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar.

Three job fairs will be held in October where perspective employees can meet with resort personnel and have interviews.

This first job fair will be held on Saturday, October 11, from 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. at the Red Cliffs Lodge at Kirkwood Mountain Resort. There will be a free shuttle for job fair attendees that will leave the South Lake Tahoe Transit Center at the Y at 9 a.m., returning at 1 p.m.

Findorff named new Tahoe Sports and Entertainment GM

A collegiate Division 1 hockey player and pro prospect was named the new General Manager and Coaching Director for Tahoe Sports and Entertainment, Inc (TSE), the operators of the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.

Michael Findorff joins TSE after working for Vail Resorts, most recently as Assistant Manager in Products, Sales and Service. Prior to that Findorff spent two years pursuing a professional hockey career with the New York Islanders and Phoenix Coyotes organizations.

Vail Resorts buys Park City Mountain Resort

Vail Resorts, the parent company of South Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort, announced Thursday that they are purchasing Park City Mountain Resort for $183M.

The agreement includes the Park City resort's base area—which include property zoned for residential and commercial development—as well as parking, lower ski terrain and lifts.

Mountain Coworking Alliance allows members to work from California to Colorado

This season, skiers and snowboarders can travel to a top-rated ski resorts and have space to work. The Tahoe Mountain Lab opened on Ski Run Blvd last year and gives locals and travelers the opportunity to have a dedicated workspace when they need it and now members can travel to other ski resort towns and use other locations.

Other mountain communities that offer the same workspace opportunities are located in Frisco, Avon, Basalt and Durango, Colorado, Jackson Hole, Wyoming as well as in both North and South Lake Tahoe.

Vail Resorts participates in ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and donates $25,000

Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz took on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Tuesday in honor of Northstar Snow Services Manager, Matt Reeder, who has been battling the disease since 2011.

250 senior team members of the resort "jumped in" on the challenge and Vail Resorts gave $100 for each of them to ALS.

Vail operates Heavenly Valley, Kirkwood and Northstar in Lake Tahoe.

Kudos: Bijou Community School's NEW PLAYGROUND

The Bijou Community Playground represents a community effort and shows what we can do when we all come together and each do a little. "Many hands make for light work" is a true phenomenon here at Bijou School. Since 2007, with the inception of the Two Way Immersion program, and our forced volunteering program, the parents, staff and community members have consistently been spending time, funds, and those blood, sweat and tears we always talk about at this school. The new playground, as well as the field and park behind it, is a tangible representation of the volunteer force here at Bijou.

2015 Alpine Ski Team Full of Lake Tahoe Athletes

PARK CITY, UT (May 7) – Olympic gold medalists Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO), Bode Miller (Franconia, NH), Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) and Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) are among the 40 athletes nominated to the 2015 U.S. Alpine Ski Team. The team will formally named in the fall during Nature Valley First Tracks at Copper Mountain, CO – home of the U.S. Ski Team Speed Center.

South Lake Tahoe Sisters Named to Junior World Ski Championships Team

Local girls, Michael and Whitney Gardner, have been named to the 2014 U.S. Freestyle Junior World Ski Championships team.

They will join 20 other Americans competing in Valmalenco, Italy starting on March 30.

Both girls have attended Whittell High School, Michael is currently a student and Whitney is a graduate. They ski for the Heavenly Valley Ski and Snowboard Foundation.

Northstar Hosts Olympic Champion David Wise Saturday, March 15

South Lake Tahoe's Jamie Anderson Continues Her Winning Ways

Olympic gold medalist Jamie Anderson of South Lake Tahoe landed another major slopestyle victory at the Burton U.S. Open Friday. Anderson clinched the TTR World Snowboard Tour slopestyle title with her win at the snowy Vail Mountain venue. Canadian Spencer O’Brien took second and Isabel Derungs of Switzerland third in the women’s final. Canada’s Mark McMorris took the victory for the men with Norwegian Stale Sandbech taking second and Candian Max Parrot third.

U.S. Olympic Freestyle Team Nominations Announced

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association announced the nomination of nine moguls and aerials athletes to the U.S. Olympic Freestyle Ski Team. The team will be led by reigning Olympic Champion Hannah Kearney and Olympians Patrick Deneen, Heather McPhie, Emily Cook and Ashley Caldwell. The athletes were nominated based on results on the International Ski Federation World Cup.

DJ Cat Makes First Appearance outside Heavenly's Tamarack Lodge

Heavenly Valley's new DJ Cat was unveiled Friday afternoon.

There will be guest DJs all winter long as part of Heavenly's winter party plan. "There is a reason we’ve been dubbed as the wild child of Vail Resorts. Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts Holding a Job Fair

Job seekers are invited to have an experience of a lifetime this winter in Lake Tahoe as Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort hire a combined total of 2,300 seasonal employees for the 2013-2014 winter season. Heavenly will hire 800 seasonal employees. Northstar will hire 1,100, and Kirkwood will hire 400. I have been working for the last year on The Children’s Memorial Tree and I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to the community of South Lake Tahoe for their support in rebuilding the memorial. I wanted to keep the Skibum as well as my alter ego out of the publicity due to the fact that there would be resistance to the idea from those that do not always agree with my views and I wanted no distractions. We had to play good cop / bad cop with the city in order to push the memorial through and guess which role I played.

Bijou Community Park is Revamped During 4th Annual Vail Resorts Echo Day

Employees of Heavenly and Kirkwood Mountain resorts and their friends and family members teamed together for the 4th Annual Vail Resorts Echo Day on Sunday, September 21st. The 312 participants volunteered to revamp Bijou Community Park, putting in a combined effort of 936 volunteer hours Saturday. Volunteers laid sod to build a family picnic area, painted signs and picnic tables, planted shrubs, cleared bushes, redistributed wood chips, resurfaced the skate park, raked the volleyball courts, picked up trash, and cleaned up the bicycle path along Al Tahoe Boulevard.

South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts keeps Christmas Cheer doors open with $5k donation

Christmas Cheer, one of South Lake Tahoe’s local food banks, could not open its doors on some Sundays this fall from lack of available funds and contributions. The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) came to the rescue with a $5,000 donation that will significantly replenish the shelves at the food bank for the 400 households it serves.

Bobby Brown Dominates 2,750 ft Long Slopestyle Course Built at Kirkwood

As the chairlifts at Kirkwood Mountain Resort came to a halt this past spring, the Snow Park Technologies (SPT) snowcats were powering up. For twenty days, an SPT crew of seven logged 1,200 hours building the slopestyle course of Bobby Brown’s dreams. Three years ago the professional skier, who is based in Denver, CO, was asking friends, “What’s next for slopestyle skiing?” The result is Red Bull Megaslope, a 2,750-foot long course that flawlessly incorporates six epic features winding across the natural terrain of the mountain.

Lake Tahoe ski resorts report growth despite dry winter

Some Lake Tahoe ski resorts say their revenues improved this past ski season because of new, automated snow machines.

With all Lake Tahoe ski resorts now closed for the season, operators are reporting record profits, despite a lack of snow after the early season.

The ski runs above Lake Tahoe are quiet and ski resorts operators are counting the season's cash and customers. Vail Resorts reports a 10 percent rise in sales at its 7 properties nation-wide, but it said growth at its Tahoe resorts was slower. The problem was a dry January through April.
