One dead, one seriously injured in Alpine Meadows avalanche

January 18 update: In a statement, Alpine Meadows said the following: At approximately 10:16 a.m, Friday, an avalanche was reported in the area between Scott Chute and Promised Land near Scott Chair at Alpine Meadows, within an open area of the resort. A male skier sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 11am. A second male skier sustained severe lower-body injuries and was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

South Tahoe High ALLY Club keeps track of SnowGlobe lost and found items

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One can only imagine the amount of lost and found items accumulated during three days of a music festival where thousands of people attend.

To help with that at the SnowGlobe Music Festival, the South Tahoe High School Ally Club was recruited to operate the Lost & Found booth at the event. In return, Chad Donnelly, the founder and CEO of SnowGlobe, gives the club a donation to help with the club's activities.

Angel of Tahoe helps spread holiday joy in South Lake Tahoe for a third year

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Tahoe Youth & Family Services (TYFS) helped spread cheer this season by hosting a special children’s holiday party on Saturday, December 14 at the Lake Tahoe Community College. This event was a collaboration made possible by the generosity and giving heart of the ‘Angel of Tahoe,’ Mrs. Lisa Maloff. For the third year in a row, Mrs. Maloff made a sizeable donation to Tahoe Youth & Family Services with the request for the agency to help make the holiday season special for local children.

Big crowd shows up to welcome Humane Society back to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has opened an office in South Lake Tahoe to better serve the community and they celebrated along with a full crowd at their grand opening reception on Tuesday.

HSTT came to the aid of the South Shore after the former director of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society embezzled almost $60,000. Its members tried to hold the 51-year-old agency together but it disbanded in January of this year, never being able to gain back the trust of the community.

Training to be held for South Lake Tahoe Warm Room volunteers

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless will host training sessions for members of the community who would like to become new Warm Room volunteers this season. The Warm Room in South Lake Tahoe is an overnight emergency shelter that operates three-four months during the winter.

24th annual Parade of Lights in Douglas County Saturday

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The 24th annual Parade of Lights presented by the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce will be held on Saturday, December 7 starting at 5:00 p.m.

Join in for this fun and beautiful family-friendly event in the towns of Gardnerville and Minden, who have joined Main Street Gardnerville to support this event. The announcing stand and parade judges will be located at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center. The parade runs from Heritage Park in Gardnerville, down Hwy. 395 to Minden Park. Barton's 11th annual Festival of Trees & Lights returns to South Shore

A holiday tradition on the South Shore for the past ten years returns to help children and adults of all ages ring in the holiday season. The Festival of Trees and Lights moves to a new home this year at Harrah's Lake Tahoe starting on Friday, December 6 and going through Sunday, December 8.

The seasonal celebration features events and entertainment including the Senior Stroll, Family Night, the Gala, and Teddy Bear Brunch.

Caples Fire 100% contained, 3,435 acres burned

A burned area assessment of the area burned by last month's Caples Fire is now underway. The Incident Commander Kevin Breitwieser has declared that the Caples Fire is now 100 percent contained and in patrol status at 3,435 acres.

There has been almost no change in fire size since October 18. The extreme wind event on October 26 that prompted a public safety power shutoff was a good test of the containment lines and resulted in three small spots that were extinguished. Traces of smoke from interior burning will continue to be visible, but no additional fire growth is expected.

Remains of missing 20-year-old located; Washoe County Sheriff's Office seeks public's help

The remains of missing 20-year-old Kenyon Wilson were located last week in the vicinity of Moon Rocks Recreation Area, not far from where his heavily damaged car was found on October 20.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office detectives announced Thursday they are treating this case as a homicide investigation and are asking the public for any information that may help to identify and locate a suspect, or suspects.

27th annual CASA Gala 2019 - Be the sparkle in a child's life

Amgen Tour of California put on hold in 2020

The Amgen Tour of California race has been put on hiatus for the 2020 racing season according to an announcement Tuesday by AEG, the sports and live entertainment company that produces the race each year. Over the past 14 years, the cycling tour has showcased some of today’s best known and most decorated international cyclists, including numerous World, Olympic and National Champions. South Lake Tahoe has been a host city on both the men's and women's sides of the popular rolling festival.

Multiple agencies participate in South Lake Tahoe active shooter drill

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An active shooting training at South Tahoe High School last week gave local, state and federal agencies the opportunity to use their collaborative skills in responding to an emergency at the school.

In the simulated event after school, a call went over the radios on a secure channel to alert all first responders of a shooting at the high school and with the shooter still on the loose. At the first call, there were seven "victims" (volunteers acting for the training).

Local Soroptimists seek girls in grades 8-12 as G.I.V.E. award candidates

Are you, or do you know of, a young woman in grades 8-12 who volunteers in the community or at school?

The Soroptimist International clubs of Tahoe Sierra and South Lake Tahoe recognize young women annually through their G.I.V.E. award program (Girls Into Volunteer Experience).

An award of $100 is given to winners of this award and the Soroptimists also give $100 to the organization of the winners' choice.

Volunteer mapping of invasive plants along Upper Truckee River completed

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A three-year effort to survey the Upper Truckee River for aquatic invasive plants has wrapped up. Community members, supported by staff from the League to Save Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Resource Conservation District, and California State Parks joined together to map the plants in order to prevent their spread during major upcoming restoration projects along the river, Lake Tahoe’s largest tributary.

Tax-aide volunteers needed in South Lake Tahoe

Looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity? If you’re good with numbers and people, you’re the kind of volunteer needed by the South Lake Tahoe branch of the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide Program.

They are seeking individuals interested in working in the volunteer-run tax preparation center. These volunteer tax preparers, called counselors, work directly with the taxpayer to fill out tax returns and electronically file the quality-reviewed returns.

South Lake Tahoe to become Sister City with Ameca in Jalisco, Mexico

The City of South Lake Tahoe is on its way to becoming the Sister City with the City of Ameca, State of Jalisco, Mexico. This will be the first Sister City for South Lake Tahoe since its former relationship with Baikalsk, Russia ended.

On August 20, long-time local resident and educator Tere Tibbets brought the subject to the City Council and the process to become a Sister City began. Los Mexicanos Restaurant owner Victor Mora had the idea and worked with Tibbetts to bring it to fruition.

No parking fee at Eagle Falls trailhead Saturday in honor of National Public Lands Day

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is on Saturday, September 28 and in the Lake Tahoe Basin it will be celebrated by the parking fee being waived for the day at the Eagle Falls Trailhead.

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) manages approximately 78 percent of the public land in the Tahoe Basin. They will continue to the celebration of NPLD through the weekend of October 5-6 when they host a booth at the Fall Fish Festival at Taylor Creek in South Lake Tahoe. This time is also the 50th anniversary of Desolation Wilderness.

South Lake Tahoe Juvenile Treatment Center youth embrace horses

It was a beautiful September day in South Lake Tahoe, as students, who have encountered challenges and temporarily reside at the South Lake Tahoe Juvenile Treatment Center (SLTJTC), received an extraordinary experience from dedicated volunteers and the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Program. The El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE) administers SLTJTC’s academic program and partnered with El Dorado County Probation to provide this day of learning to teach students about the animals, potential careers and social skills.

Over 300 Vail employees volunteer during 10th annual EpicPromise Week

Annual Firefest returns to Lake Tahoe

On the 26th Liberty Utilities’ sponsor crew, consisting of Kurt Althof and Blaine Ladd, were very enthusiastic and eager to embrace the opportunity to pitch in and serve the vulnerable of the community.

Semi-annual Cram-a-Cruiser to benefit Bread & Broth 4 Kids

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Twice a year the community has a chance to fill a police cruiser with food for the Bread & Broth 4 Kids program that feeds children in South Lake Tahoe. The next Cram-a-Cruiser is set for Saturday, September 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Grocery Outlet on Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

During the school year, volunteers fill backpacks of food every weekend for almost 200 local school children. This food helps feed them over the weekend where the free breakfast and lunch programs at school aren't able to help.

Great Sierra River Cleanup

Barton Foundation awards $50,000 to groups focused on community's health needs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Fifteen local health programs offered by nonprofits and agencies in the South Lake Tahoe area have been awarded grants by the Barton Foundation. A total of $50,000 was distributed among the groups to aid in their efforts to address the community’s most pressing health issues.

During the 2018 Barton Community Health Needs Assessment, the top health issues identified in the South Lake Tahoe community were access to care, mental health, and substance abuse.

Thousands of Burners head through Reno-Tahoe International Airport on way to Black Rock Desert

The Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) was a very busy place Monday as most of the 20,000 people expected to fly in for Burning Man 2019 passed through on their way to the Black Rock Desert.

Attendees to the annual event (known as Burners) were greeted at the airport RNO's therapy dogs, Paws for Passengers, who wore costumes for the day to bring smiles to arriving Burners.

Welcome activities are taking place all week at Air Playa Info, a welcome area staffed by local volunteers dedicated to assisting Burners.

Kudos: Bread & Broth thanks Heavenly Mountain Resort

Heavenly Mountain Resort sponsored their 4th Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment Monday Meal this year on August 12th. Mike Allen, Vince Arthur, Russell Carlton, Eric Davidson and Ted McDowell, all members of Heavenly’s Senior Leadership Team, volunteered and participated in the dinner hosted by Heavenly.
