Vacation rental scams through Craigslist continue in South Lake Tahoe

Unknowingly, visitors to South Lake Tahoe are renting legitimate vacation homes through illegitimate parties, leaving them without money or a place to stay when they arrive.

South Tahoe Now has been warning people for years about renting both short-term and long-term homes through Craigslist, the online classified ad forum.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is warning potential vacation home renters that scams continue on Craigslist.

Champions Plaza “Spirit of Competition” unveiled

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long awaited 11 foot tall bronze sculpture "Spirit of Competition" perched on top of a 4.5 ton boulder was unveiled during a ceremony at Champions Plaza Friday.

Sculptor Gareth Curtiss transported his creation from his studio in Fortine, Montana just two days ago in the back of his van, early Thursday morning the bronze sculpture was picked up with a crane and placed on top of the boulder, bolted in and wrapped up for the ceremony.

South Lake Tahoe hockey games to raise funds for Santa Rosa fire victims

The Santa Rosa Flyers, the amateur youth hockey teams based at Snoopy's Ice in Santa Rosa, Calif., will be in South Lake Tahoe this weekend for season games against South Tahoe Amateur Hockey Association's Tahoe Grizzlies. Thirteen families from the Santa Rosa hockey organization lost their homes in the recent wildfires.

New boardwalk at Taylor Creek unveiled

The popular Rainbow Trail at the U.S. Forest Service Visitor's Center in South Lake Tahoe now has a brand new boardwalk at Taylor Creek.

As Kokanee salmon head upstream on the creek, many people walking the trail to watch this annual display of nature would often wander to the creek, many to get a selfie with bears in the area, and some even disrupting the salmon run.

Douglas County Sheriff's K-9 fundraiser

The final radio show of the year for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office will coincide with a K-9 fundraiser on Friday, October 6 with Jon Sanchez on KOH780AM.

Five of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office K-9s will be on hand during the live show and event from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sanchez Ranch Meats located at 1734 Hwy 395 in Minden, Nev.

The DCSO K-9 unit is made up of Shadow, Drago, Bak, Bane and Beny.

South Tahoe High homecoming activities include parade, football and golf

A week full of South Tahoe High homecoming activities wrap up with a parade through town Friday afternoon, football games Friday night and a golf tournament Saturday.

Watch the class floats with their worldly themes, an entourage of elementary school floats, school buses, the Homecoming Court in convertibles and dump trucks full of class and Viking spirit. They leave the bus garage on Al Tahoe Boulevard at Friday at 3:30 p.m. and proceed down Highway 50 to the high school.

South Lake Tahoe Grocery Outlet undergoing major remodel

The South Lake Tahoe Grocery Outlet is expanding their produce section and other healthy food option areas, and moving all other items around to make the store easier to move around.

"Nothing is going to be in the same place," said Deanna Schouten, whose family owns the popular local store. "The non-food items will be on one side of the store, there is one full aisle of NOSH (Natural, Organic, Specialty, Healthy), new coolers and dairy section."

Homelessness is a housing issue in South Lake Tahoe and beyond

Homelessness isn’t just a South Lake Tahoe issue. It isn’t just an El Dorado county issue. It isn't just a California problem, though the state ranks 49th in housing units per capita.

And it isn't a problem that is going away any time soon and will take a change in the way the problem is currently being addressed to be solved. For every 100 people who are added to the population of California there are only 32 housing units built to house them.

Fall plant sale and Grow Dome tours at Sierra House

Genoa Peak Fire nears containment

Update 8/24 6PM - The size of the Genoa Peak Fire on the Carson Ranger District has been updated after the GPS mapped it 5.9 acres today. The fire is 75 percet contained with 100 percent containment expected by the end of today. There are currently 31 firefighters on scene.

South Lake Tahoe, CA – Recovering from a major joint surgery doesn’t usually inspire the idea of snowshoeing by moonlight, but that’s exactly what Carol Bennis, age 75, was asked to do during her recovery last February.

Carol had never been on snowshoes before, or hiked at night, but when she heard her surgeon and other patients at a similar stage of recovery would be there, she decided to try it out.

Lake Tahoe Secret Witness offers $3,000 for arrest of Manpreet Singh's murderer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Secret Witness Program if offering a $3,000 reward leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder of local gas station attendant Manpreet Singh on August 3, 2013.

“Friends and family never forget and neither should we," said El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson as he asked for the public's help in solving the case.

Singh was the lone employee on the night shift at U.S. Gas on Lake Tahoe Boulevard when a gunman entered the store, shot and killed him.

National Night Out - Staying safe at home, work and play

South Lake Tahoe could see temps in the 90s next week

High pressure will set up over Northern California and Northwest Nevada over the next few days and dominate area weather. Expect hot temperatures, with some records possible on both sides of the Sierra.

In Nevada there will be isolated thunderstorms each afternoon and evening. The high will shift east late in the week with moisture increasing. Thunderstorm potential will increase at this time as well according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Guest Columnist: Turn Off the Mental Noise

Mental noise can affect ability to concentrate and often contributes to anxiety. This continuous inner conversation in your head can be particularly bothersome at bedtime or when waking in the middle of the night.

Here are a couple tricks to calm or turn off mental noise when trying to sleep.

1. Plan ahead. Before going to bed, grab a pad of paper and write down anything that is bothering you right then or that you think may be of concern if you wake in the middle of the night. Even the smallest things seem out of proportion at 3 a.m. as you toss and turn.

South Lake Tahoe to see week of highs 78-85

4:00 p.m. Saturday update: The popular saying "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes" is true again in Lake Tahoe. The National Weather Service in Reno has updated their forecast:

Saturday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 p.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 51. West wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light in the evening.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 86. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.

Two new members added to Douglas County K9 unit

There are two new members to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Beny and Bane.

Beny is from Slovakia and is a one-year-old German Shepard. His new partner is canine handler Deputy Adam Windsor, who has been with DCSO for 13 years. Deputy Windsor described Beny as "mellow."

Movie The Appeal of Suicide to be shown in Lake Tahoe

According to the World Health Organization, a massive 800,000 people take their lives every year—one death every 40 seconds. That’s over 2,000 a day.

A free showing of the movie "EXIT: The Appeal of Suicide" will be shown on the South Shore on Saturday, July 15 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m at Tahoe Community Church in Stateline. There will be a question and answer period Q & A after the movie.

Shakespeare for the younger set: Will's Kids, returns to South Lake Tahoe

I took a couple of field trips this month related to learning more about cannabis and how it may affect our city if retail, commercial grows, testing, and edible production are implemented. I learned a lot and will share some of the highlights with you.

The first trip was to Breckenridge, a visit I piggybacked on top of a wedding I attended in Vail. I met with their Mayor, City Manager (formerly the police chief) and the assistant city manager. Temperatures into the 70s bringing more melting snow, flood warnings

Warming temperatures will accelerate snowpack melt across the Sierra this weekend and the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for California and western Nevada, including the following areas: In California, Greater Lake Tahoe Area, Lassen-Eastern Plumas-Eastern Sierra Counties, and Mono County. In western Nevada: Greater Lake Tahoe Area and Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden Area.

Flows on small creeks and streams will rise through at least early next week. Daily peak flows on small creeks and streams typically occur during the evening
and overnight hours.

SLTPD 50th anniversary to have boat rides, K-9s, Calstar, BBQ, concert and awards

The community is in for a treat on Saturday, May 20 as the South Lake Tahoe Police Department celebrates 50 years of service with a party at Lakeview Commons from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Locals and visitors, young and old, can ride on the SLTPD boat, see the department's K-9s, watch a demonstration over the water with CalStar at 3:00 p.m., watch how the drone assists in rescues, an awards ceremony that will honor three citizens as well as staff at 4:00 p.m., and a free BBQ. There is also a free concert on the beach.

You Matter, I Will Listen

Life isn't always easy and sometimes people just need someone to talk to. Everyone can benefit from some sort of support and it can be as simple as a cup of tea with a friend, a walk around the block or a conversation.

The "You Matter, I Sill Listen" campaign was started last year by Sabrina Owen, manager of El Dorado County Mental Health programs in South Lake Tahoe, to help people be that needed a little support.

Professional cyclists start arriving in Lake Tahoe for two stages of Amgen

Tyler and Cheryl Cannon, owners of Sprouts Cafe in South Lake Tahoe, opened their doors Tuesday to two of the cycling teams in town for two stages of the Amgen Breakaway from Heart DiseaseTM Women's Race empowered with SRAM on May 11-12.

DROPS and United Healthcare (UHC) were there not only to enjoy the food Sprouts is known for, but to spend time with media and sharing their stories two days before race time.

Pro soccer team Reno 1868 FC to play LTCC in exhibition game Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.— Tuesday will be a historical night of soccer at Lake Tahoe Community College as the new professional soccer team, Reno 1868 FC, heads to the south shore to play an exhibition game against the college's men's soccer team. This will be the first professional soccer team to ever play in Tahoe.

On April 25, At 7:00 p.m. the teams will play under the lights at the LTCC home field. Admission is free and open to the public. Reno 1868 FC will sign autographs following the game.

Kingsbury Grade reopens

Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207) reopened at 4:30 p.m. Saturday after closing Friday afternoon to allow crews to remove a slide and remove trees and boulders.

Rockfall mitigation experts spent Saturday bringing down boulders from the top of a roadside slope on Kingsbury Grade. Heavy precipitation had loosened not only the boulders, but trees as well.

The roadway is now clear and traffic is moving from the Carson Valley to Lake Tahoe. Nevada Department of Transportion (NDOT) and their contractor Q&D Construction made repairs to an eroding roadside slope and extensive rockfall.

Kingsbury Grade closed indefinitely after rocks and dirt slide onto road

4:15 p.m. update: Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207) will remain closed indefinitely on the Carson Valley side of the road as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) continues safety evaluation and removal of major rockfall.

The highway was closed early Friday afternoon as NDOT and contractor Q&D Construction removed loose trees and earth from a roadside slope to help reduce rock and mud fall onto the highway. The slope had slid approximately one foot within the past 24 hours, posing the threat of bringing mud, rock and debris across the highway.

High winds in South Lake Tahoe; heavy snow and rain on the way

A late season atmospheric river will bring another significant precipitation event to the Sierra and western Nevada. Near saturated soils and a mostly ripe low to mid elevation snowpack will contribute to increased runoff. This will increase flood potential, especially along creeks and streams, Friday into Saturday. This event isn`t expected to be as strong as storms in January and February but is a significant precipitation event for April.

The winds have arrived in South Lake Tahoe, and three weather related warnings have come with them: wind, snow and flooding.

Skier caught in avalanche on Mt. Tallac

The Sierra Avalanche Center is reporting a skier-triggered avalanche in "The Cross" on Mt. Tallac Saturday. A group of eight skiers had been in the area about 11:00 a.m. and they skied the main entrance to the cross with some wet, loose snow activity observed.

Then, a group of two skiers went to the top of the mountain to descend into "The Cross." The first skier made several turns into the slope which released a slab avalanche.

Strong field of cyclists heading to South Lake Tahoe for 2-day Amgen race

The teams for this Spring's Amgen Tour of California and Amgen Breakaway from Heart DiseaseTM Women’s Race empowered with SRAM have been announced, and they contain some of the most decorated cyclists in the world.

AEG, the producer and presenter of the 2017 tours, made the announcement today.

The men's Amgen Tour of California runs from May 14-20 and the Amgen Breakaway from Heart DiseaseTM Women’s Race empowered with SRAM starts in South Lake Tahoe on May 11,with the final race on May 14.

Sierra-at-Tahoe hosts Freeride World Tour qualifying event

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Sierra-at-Tahoe will host the second annual Huck Cup, a 2-Star Freeride World Tour Qualifying event on March 3-4, 2017. The Freeride World Tour is a worldwide circuit of freeride skiing and snowboarding events where athletes compete on legendary and challenging terrain at the most renowned resorts around the world. The event will take place in Huckleberry Canyon, 320 acres of backcountry terrain accessed by five gates at the summit of Sierra-at-Tahoe.

Sunday and Monday storm to pack a wallop: 5 ft of snow above 7500 ft; high winds and flooding

The next storm headed to Northern California and Western Nevada is an atmospheric river that is trending wetter, just like the other storms South Lake Tahoe has seen in 2017 according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

A Lake Wind Advisory, Winter Storm Warning and and Flood Watch have all been issued for Lake Tahoe.
