Before considerable scientific research by Western Nevada College Professor of Geosciences Dr. Winnie Kortemeier, it was understood that Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America, was created during the Pleistocene era, also known as the Ice Age, roughly 10,000 to 2.6 million years ago.

Through her radiometric dating of rocks and examining the basalt that has interacted with the water of Lake Tahoe, Dr. Kortemeier has determined that the lake is 2.3 million years old.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will be hosting the 3rd annual K9 Unit Challenge and Public K9 Obstacle Course on Saturday, October 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fuji Park in Carson City.

This is a free, public event.

Dozens of K9s from multiple agencies will compete in three primary events: patrol apprehension, odor detection, and agility. Apprehension and Agility events will be on full display at Fuji’s main arena, where there are bleachers for public viewing (and cheering).

TAHOE CITY, Calif. – This 9th annual fun-filled cruise, A Liar’s Cruise, is back! On Saturday, October 5, attendees will cruise down the West Shore on the Tahoe Gal at 952 North Lake Blvd., Tahoe City. Onboard are spellbinding storytellers, free-flowing fine wine by Highway 12 Winery (no-host bar available), and endless appetizers sponsored by Raley’s. Attendees must decide if they believe the storytellers are telling the truth or not; hence, a liar’s cruise! The evening ends with a lively live auction of unique treasures and experiences. The boat departs sharply at 4 p.m.

Chase International Foundation recently awarded $12,500 to Northern Nevada and California non-profit agencies as part of its ‘Four Pillars of Giving’ grant program.

The bi-annual grant recipients include the Ian Casey Foundation, Reno Judo Club, Food Bank of Northern Nevada, For Kids Foundation, Rescued Hearts Ranch, Sierra Kids Foundation, Sierra Lutheran High School, and Supporting Our Survivors.

TAHOE CITY, Calif. - The inaugural Tahoe Literary Festival is on Oct. 11 and 12 at venues in Tahoe City. Author and naturalist Obi Kaufmann is the keynote. Kaufmann will speak on Oct. 12 as part of the tour for his newest book, “The State of Fire, Why California Burns,” to be released in September.

STATELINE, Nev. – The Tahoe Knight Monsters, proud ECHL Affiliate of the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights and the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights announced today that the team has agreed to terms with center Luke Adam for the 2024-25 season.

Adam, 34, comes to Tahoe after spending the last eight years abroad. He played seven seasons in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) from 2016-2023, and split time last year with HC Plzeň in Czechia and HC Banska Bystrica in Slovakia. In that 2023-24 season, he played 28 games and totaled 15 points (5g 10a).

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - From Baldwin Beach to Rubicon Bay and inside Emerald Bay there are approximately six miles of submerged century-old cables containing about 107,000 pounds of lead in Lake Tahoe. They are just feet away from iconic Emerald Bay, beautiful beaches and tall trees, and underneath the turquoise blue water Lake Tahoe is known for.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The rollout of the new three-cart trash system is well underway in South Lake Tahoe, with the carts now making their way into the El Dorado county portion of the South Shore. As with anything new, things have been confusing for some, drawing numerous complaints from others, with most ready to try out the new way of disposing of garbage, green waste, and recyclables.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif/Nev. - A new Lake Tahoe Regional Evacuation Plan has been developed through a collaboration between Lake Tahoe fire chiefs, law enforcement agencies, and emergency management personnel. The plan was created using a diverse team of experts from two states and five counties, using experiences gained during past major wildfires.

The 185-page document is a "living document" intended to provide the public with critical information related to evacuations and will be updated periodically.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - U.S. Ski & Snowboard officially announced the 36 athletes who have accepted their nominations and will join the Stifel U.S. Freeski Team for the 2024-25 season. The announcement was made in Park City, Utah on Friday, and South Lake Tahoe native Piper Arnold is on that list.

Piper, who turned 17 this summer, is on the halfpipe rookie women's team, joining pros Hanna Faulhaber, Svea Irving, Riley Jacobs, and the other rookie, Kate Gray, 18, of Crowley Lake who skis for Mammoth Mountain.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) has arrested a suspect for causing the Crozier Fire that ignited in El Dorado County on August 6, 2024.

On September 16, EDSO arrested Jason Robinette, 48, of Placerville, on a warrant issued by CAL FIRE Law Enforcement. The arrest was made following an investigation into the Crozier Fire.

Robinette was arrested in Placerville and booked into the El Dorado County Jail on charges of arson and starting the Crozier Fire, ultimately burning 1,960 acres in El Dorado County.

Bail has been set at $250,000.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - At 4:30 p.m. Sunday, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded to a report of two deceased persons in a vehicle in the Glenbrook area. Deputies arrived in the US50 and Kelly Circle area near the historical marker, and discovered a male and female, in the front seat of a GMC pickup truck.

DCSO Sheriff Dan Coverley said it appears the male shot the female and then shot himself.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – When the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) passed its 2018 Shoreline Plan, the process of the cleanup of illegal buoys and moorings began. The Plan capped the number of piers and boat moorings, along with other shoreline activities such as commercial operations such as boat charters.

I've been vocal in my opposition to many of the tax measures that have come before our community over the last year, including the proposed property transfer tax, the TOT tax increase, the minimum wage increase and several others. I oppose Measure N, believing it is poorly written and will do little but increase the inefficiency that haunts our local government. However, when it comes to Measure U, the school bond initiative for Lake Tahoe Unified School District, I find myself in an uncharacteristic position: advocating for its passage.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Carson Valley Health has announced the addition of a dedicated cardiology team to the CVH Cardiology Clinic and Cardiac Catheterization Lab in Gardnerville.

Along with board-certified cardiologists, Carson Valley Health has a state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratory, or cath lab, as part of the imaging services offered at the newly expanded hospital.
