SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council approved a lowering of speed limits on some streets in the city after an Engineering and Traffic Survey (E&TS) was completed. California law requires cities to conduct a speed survey every 10 years for a speed limit to be enforceable,
even if no changes have been made to the roadway.

The Council approved a reduction in speed to 30 mph on Ski Run Blvd. from US50 to Pioneer Trail, on Lake Tahoe Blvd. from SR89 (the Y) to D Street, and a reduction to 25 mph on Pioneer Trail from Keller Road to US50.

TRUCKEE, Calif. – An American White Pelican was stranded in Truckee and a group of people came to its rescue on a bitterly cold day this week, right before a storm hit the region. This story could have ended poorly for the distressed bird, but determined volunteers kept it from a disastrous fate as they battled thick ice, a strong, elusive target, and much uncertainty in trying to save a magnificent American White Pelican.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A dose of pre-holiday spirit has arrived in South Lake Tahoe. A 60-foot white fir tree was delivered to Heavenly Village. From there it will transform into a decorated Christmas Tree with a tree-lighting ceremony on Friday, November 29 at 5 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Mountain Resort opened for the 2024/25 season on Wednesday, with resort officials saying they couldn't have asked for anything better - great snow, better company, and endless fun.

First ski and ride days always come with high energy and smiles, and it was no different today, said those on the slopes.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Ski California Board of Directors has tapped John Rice, a ski industry veteran with 47 years of experience, as the association’s new president. Rice, who has served as Vice President and General Manager of Sierra-at-Tahoe since 1993, succeeds Mike Reitzell, who is now president and CEO of the National Ski Areas Association.

OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. - For over 13 years there has been a plan in the works to expand the resort that is now known as Palisades Tahoe, adding residences, some dormitory-style housing, new commercial, retail, entertainment, and year-round recreational land uses including improved trail system, and public and private recreation facilities.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – The University of California, Davis, Office of Research has announced the appointment of Stephanie Hampton as the director of the Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) and professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy.

Hampton, an accomplished aquatic ecologist, and administrator currently serving as the deputy director of Biosphere Sciences and Engineering at Carnegie Science, will join TERC in the spring of 2025.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though an atmospheric river is aiming for California, Lake Tahoe will not see the brunt of the storm. The area north of San Francisco into the I5 corridor will see massive amounts of rain, up to ten inches in many areas.

The first wave of the storm starts Wednesday, with a second, stronger storm hitting the region Friday into Saturday. The public should watch the forecast as the system gets closer, especially if traveling through the Sierra and over mountain passes.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Rock Ensemble Class Performance, directed by Liz Broscoe, will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at the Lake Tahoe Community College's Duke Theatre. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Broscoe will also be the opening show.

Suggested donations at $5 per person will all proceeds going to support the St. Theresa Bread & Broth 4 Kids program.

The Duke Theatre is located at One College Drive, South Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Kings Meats extended their annual turkey giveaway to South Lake Tahoe this past Sunday, providing over 700 turkeys to families in need. This remarkable act of generosity, traditionally held only in Placerville, was made possible through the support of El Dorado County residents, family-run small businesses, community leaders, Kings Meats guests, and the El Dorado Community Foundation.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) Fall Prescribed Fire Program continues this week around Lake Tahoe, conditions and weather permitting. North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District may burn piles around Incline Village, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District may burn piles near Glenbrook, Logan Creek, and on Kingsbury Grade, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit may burn piles off Luther Pass near the campground and off Fallen Leaf and Spring Creek roads near South Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe has been trying to get Heavenly Mountain Resort to support its plans to annex the land where the California operations are located. Heavenly is an island in the middle of the South Lake Tahoe city limits, leaving it to be serviced by El Dorado County while those going to enjoy the resort use city streets and services.

Twice weekly, Bread & Broth (B&B) offers a meal service to anyone in the community who wants to enjoy a nutritious meal and the camaraderie of other locals. On Mondays, full-course meals and bags of food are provided at the Monday Meal served at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall, and then every Friday, a simple entrée, soup, and salad are offered at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) forest thinning (fuels reduction) projects are underway and scheduled to continue through fall 2024, conditions and weather permitting. North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, Liberty Utilities, NV Energy, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit are working together to protect Lake Tahoe communities by reducing excess vegetation that can feed unwanted wildfires.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – The 2025 Lake Tahoe Basin Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) has been updated to reflect the evolving needs of our communities and landscape. CWPPs are community-driven plans prioritizing wildfire risk reduction, using local input and data to guide fuel reduction, improve preparedness, and address structural ignitability and wildfire response.
