Schools remind parents of new immunization rule for California
Submitted by paula on Sun, 05/15/2016 - 5:09pmEl Dorado County Public Health and school officials are reminding parents of a new California school immunization law, SB 277 that went into effect January 1, 2016. The law eliminates exemptions based on personal beliefs, including religious beliefs, for the vaccines that are currently required for entry into child care or school, kindergarten through grade 12.

United Blood Services is holding a blood drive Wednesday, May 18 at Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District Station 23 in Round Hill. Donations have declined since mid-March and the demand has escalated, dropping the available supply of Type O-Negative and Type O-positive to extremely low levels. Blood center officials have concluded that an increase in Zika deferrals after Spring Break travels has caused a decline in public responsiveness to donate blood.
Mental Health Awareness: Reducing number of adults with mental illness in jails

The initiative, signed by two hundred fifty counties, has one lofty goal: reduce the number of adults with mental illness in the criminal justice system.

But if a person feels sad more days than not and it causes a difference in social, academic, and occupational functioning, it may be signs of a depressive disorder. The day may feel heavy or overwhelming, a person may lose track of time or forget what is important, and things that used to cause joy and pleasure no longer bring happiness. Get free screening during Posture Awareness Month

In response to this focus, Dr. Joshua Welch of South Lake Tahoe is offering free posture screenings thru May, 2016 at Safe Haven Chiropractic. Included is a free report and exercises to reverse poor posture in young children and adults.
“Maintaining correct posture and correct alignment is one of the foundations to healthy living," said Welch. "It can reduce injuries, decrease flare-ups and allow athletes to maintain elite performance.”
New community health nurse hired for Douglas County

After a nationwide recruitment, Carson City Health and Human Services along with Douglas County selected Fuller which included an interview process which began in February, 2016 and included a panel of nursing, social services, and administrative leadership from the Carson City and Douglas County Community Health and Social Services agencies.

Community collaboration helps to change the stigma of mental illness

Hosted by Barton Health, this year's forum participants shared the progress they've made on strategies for mental health and local service gaps that were generated during the 2015 event.
Jeanne Nelson from the South Lake Tahoe chapter of NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) was very pleased with the outcome Thursday.

“Mom’s Morning Out is an event just for women that unites the body and mind.” says Natasha Schue, Barton’s Community Relations Coordinator. “It’s an opportunity to slow down, unwind, and be pampered.”

Dr. Amanda Weavil voted Barton's Doctor of the Year

Dr. Weavil is a board-certified OB-GYN for Barton Women’s Health. In early March, she won the Dancing with the Tahoe Stars competition and received the people’s choice award. Now, in honor of national Doctors Day, Barton Health physicians and staff voted Weavil as their favorite physician.
Barton Memorial Hospital receives Four Stars for patient satisfaction

Each Medicare certified acute care hospital across the nation receives a patient perception rating between one and five stars based on patient satisfaction surveys. Of the 298 California hospitals assessed, Barton Hospital ranked in the top 14 percent.

Participants must register for this class by March 14th at www.cslt.sportssignup.com. The class is conducted by American Red Cross Certified Instructor Liz Terzian and will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will be trained and certified to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illness until EMS (emergency services) take over.

The South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department the class with instructor Liz Terzian who will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will be trained and certified to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illness until EMS (emergency services) take over.
South Lake Tahoe woman running across US to bring awareness to obesity

Ari touched the Atlantic Ocean and left Jacksonville, Florida on January 28. Today, Tuesday, February 16, she is 350 miles away in Fort Walton Beach.

South Lake Tahoe woman facing brain cancer with friends, family and hugs

Those powerful words come from South Lake Tahoe local Krista Kline Carson.
The 1989 South Tahoe High graduate, wife, mother and wellness coordinator for Barton University, is battling cancer after a tumor removed from her brain was found to be Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme, one of the fastest growing brain cancers. On Monday, January 18 she begins a six week regime of radiation and chemotherapy.

Barton Health is hosting an open enrollment working session on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at the Lake Tahoe Community College from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
During this session, individuals can apply for health coverage and have access to certified representatives for any needed assistance. The deadline to sign up is January 31, 2016.
They are reminding people to bring their picture identification, social security number and household income to the enrollment session.

Tendons are bands of fibrous connective tissue that attach muscles to the bones. Micro tears in the tendon can lead to irritation and inflammation known as tendonitis. If the area is not well rested or treated, the tendon starts to degenerate and can turn into unhealthy scar tissue that does not perform or move well.

Chemicals linked with severe respiratory disease found in common e-cigarette flavors

Chan School of Public Health. Two other potentially harmful related compounds were also found in many of the tested flavors, which included varieties with potential appeal to young people such as Cotton Candy, Fruit Squirts, and Cupcake.

Those are the telling words used to open the film, Effects of Domestic Violence on Children. As our brains grow, they create a blueprint for every new experience we have, the sounds, the touches and the sights. We may not remember what happens to us as a baby but our experiences are forever etched in our brains and create the building blocks of our lives.

Hear from a team of experts about how to stay injury free during the upcoming winter season at the next lecture offered by Barton Health on Wednesday, November 4. Terry Orr, MD, from Tahoe Center for Orthopedics will share what happens when a knee injury occurs and LTCC anatomy professor Beachy Orr, PhD will teach about the anatomy of the knee. Two of Barton Health's certified athletic trainers, Andy Borah, ATC and Jeremy Vandehurst, ATC, will also lead participants in exercises to get the winter season going.
