Evacuation Drill for Zephyr Knolls and Zephyr Heights on May 31
Submitted by Editor on Mon, 05/28/2012 - 2:49amThe Tahoe Douglas Fire District will hold an inter-agency wildfire evacuation drill on May 31 between the hours of 10am – 2pm.
The drill will be held in the Zephyr Heights and Zephyr Knolls communities. Residents of these communities will be notified by direct mail, door hangers and signage at the entrance areas to the communities.
Residents are encouraged to participate. The evacuation center for the drill will be the Zephyr Cove Park picnic area. Lunch will be served to those residents who evacuate to the park.
South Lake Tahoe Certified Farmers' Market begins June 5

This year's crop of organic produce will find its way to South Lake Tahoe beginning June 5 and extend throughout summer at the American Legion Hall parking lot and Fridays starting June 22 on Ski Run Boulevard.
The Certified Farmers' Market will run from 8 a.m to 1 p.m. each Tuesday through Oct. 9 at the American Legion Hall parking lot. Produce is picked within hours of market days and visitor can talk directly to the farmer and learn about new varieties of fruits and vegetables and farming practices.

Submitted by Editor on Sun, 05/27/2012 - 11:14amCooler, wet weather helped firefighters yesterday achieve full containment of the Topaz Ranch Estates Fire 15 miles south of Gardnerville, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.
The fire consumed 7,152 acres, two homes and 17 outbuildings. The local Carson City BLM District office took over command of the firefighting this morning. Ten firefighters remain on the scene, down from a peak of over 500.
Webinar series offered to develop fire adapted communities at Lake Tahoe

Communities located in fire-prone area are fire adapted when they require little assistance from firefighters during a wildfire. Residents accept responsibility for living in a high fire-hazard area. They possess the knowledge and skills to prepare their homes and property to survive wildfire and they know how to evacuate early, safely and effectively.
Tahoe Yellow Cress planted in partnership with high school, private business and conservation groups
Submitted by Editor on Sun, 05/27/2012 - 10:11amA group of South Tahoe High School students joined Edgewood employees, conservation experts and officials on May 19 to plant new nursery grown stems of the threatened plant, Tahoe yellow cress on the beach at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. Edgewood Companies is participating in a volunteer program called the Tahoe Yellow Cress Stewardship Program and has been assisting with inventory surveys as far back as 1979.
Fuelwood permit sales for Tahoe Basin begin first week of June

Permits cost $20 per cord with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10-cords per household.
