Master Gardeners news: Teaching students to grow microgreens; Grow-Your-Own Festival

This UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe (LTMG) recently taught lessons on how to grow microgreens to 11 classes of third graders at four school sites within Lake Tahoe Unified School District, and the second graders at Zephyr Cove Elementary. This project is part of a larger effort to involve more students in the community in gardening. About 250 students got to plant their own microgreen seeds and learn how to grow and use them.

Elaine Dorris, 75, of Carson City, was last seen driving a red 2022 Honda Cr-V with Nevada license plate 061V75 in the area of Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Ski Run Blvd. in the afternoon of April 1, 2024.

Dorris is listed as “At Risk” due to medical history.

Six arrested in undercover operation targeting human trafficking in Stateline area at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Those opposing the proposed $6,000 vacancy tax in South Lake Tahoe are invited to join others against the tax in planned protests on April 2 and April 3.

Signatures are being gathered to get the initiative on the November ballot to tax homes in the City that are vacant six months or more during the year.

A few South Lake Tahoe residents will be demonstrating against the proposed tax, a penalty for owning a vacation home and are unable to vote on the tax measure, if on the ballot.

Monthly gaming report: South Shore Lake Tahoe up 12.9%, Carson Valley up 7%

Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,342,192,407 for February 2024, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's latest monthly report. This amounts to an 8.5 percent increase compared to the same month a year ago when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,237,048,360. For the fiscal year to date (since July), the gaming win has increased by 5.23 percent with $10,627,278,313 in "win".

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The search is on for volunteers who love to be paid in smiles and hugs while making a difference in a person's life. The local Special Olympic group seeks volunteers to work with athletes in their swim program. You don't have to be a "seasoned" coach, but you do need to enjoy working with this population. This is an "in-the-pool" position.

Fifteen members of Class 18 of the Lake Tahoe Fire Academy graduate

Class 18 of the Lake Tahoe Fire Academy held its graduation this week at the Tahoe Blue Event Center. Started in 2007, the Academy is a pipeline to active fire service in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The graduates have undergone fire training including wildland fire, hazardous materials, ice rescue, ventilation training, and other experiential learning services.

Normally a one-year program, this year's class graduated in just six months. The curriculum was revamped to accommodate the new schedule, increasing the number of people eligible to help fill fire service needs immediately.

Winter Storm Warning issued for Lake Tahoe over holiday weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) for the region from 11 a.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Sunday. The warning covers the Greater Lake Tahoe area of Stateline, Incline Village, Markleeville, South Lake Tahoe, Glenbrook, Tahoe City, and Truckee.

Expect heavy snow at times with snow accumulations of 8 to 18 inches with up to 30 inches along the Sierra crest. Winds will be gusting as high as 40 mph.

Six Whittell High School students make up the smallest graduating class in school history

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - The 64th graduating class at Whittell High School at Lake Tahoe will be its smallest with just six students.

The class started at the school with 35 students, then COVID happened and most did not return. There were five seniors when the school year started, then that dropped to four, and then there were six!

The class may be small, but they are mighty. One is heading to Camp Pendleton after graduation as a Marine, while his five classmates will continue their education.

Douglas County names new community services director

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Brook Adie has been tapped to be the next community services director for Douglas County. Adie served as the assistant community services Director from 2021-2023 and has been interim community services Director since July 2023.

“I am honored to be selected as the director of the department,” Adie said. “I have had the privilege of working with and learning from the previous director, Scott Morgan, who was with the department for 30 years. I have learned so much and I am excited for the opportunity to take his vision forward into the coming years.”

Lake Tahoe ski resort closing dates updated

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - March snowstorms have helped push the Sierra snowpack to just about average, allowing the ski resorts to keep operations open at several Lake Tahoe ski resorts. The 2022/23 season ended with the Central Sierra snowpack at 192 percent of normal, and as of today that total is 99 percent with more snow forecast before the end of the month. April 1 is the date normally used as the highest water content for the Sierra snowpack.

Kirkwood announced they will remain open until April 28, and Heavenly's last date is April 21. Sierra at Tahoe will also close on April 21.

Fundraising site for North Lake Tahoe 7-year-old snowboarder heading to USASA Nationals

A 7-year-old Tahoe City athlete is heading to the USASA Nationals Snowboarding Championships from March 29-April 9, and he is fundraising to help with expenses including airfare, entry fees, hotel, rental car, and food.

"Leland the Falcon" Vogt is the son of Chuck Vogt, the founder of nonprofit fundraising events Skake The Lake, Boarding for Breast Cancer, and owner of Tahoe Longboards.
