Prescribed fire operations continue around Lake Tahoe

Members of the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) will continue conducting prescribed fire operations this week in the Lake Tahoe Basin. If conditions and weather remain favorable, California State Parks, Nevada Division of Forestry, North Lake Tahoe, and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts will be burning piles in numerous locations. Smoke will be present.

Carson City man in jail after allegedly stabbing Douglas County man multiple times

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A Carson City man was arrested Monday after allegedly stabbing a Douglas County man in the 800 block of Mica Drive.

On November 14, 2022, at approximately 10:45 a.m., deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) were called to the Indian Hills home for a report of a stabbing. When the deputies arrived they found a male victim with multiple stab wounds to the torso. He was transported via Care Flight to Renown Medical center for treatment. His current condition is unknown.

560 Christmas tree permits sold in first day in South Lake Tahoe

UPDATE: USFS LTBMU has updated its figures from tree permits sold on Monday. They started the day with 1,360 permits to sell, and sold 560, leaving 800 permits still available.

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless receives $100K donation from Kyle and Jessica Aster

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) has announced they received an incredibly generous donation from Kyle and Jessica Aster. The Asters made a donation of $100,000 that will help with their operational shortfall as winter begins. These funds are helping at a
critical time as temperatures plummet, more snow is on the way, and they are under renovations on rooms for new tenants. Currently, forty rooms are housing vulnerable members of our community, and twenty more units will be available in 2023.

One woman dies, two children injured in early morning collision south of Lake Tahoe

One person died and two children were injured in an early morning traffic collision Monday morning at Picketts Junction.

At approximately 4:25 a.m. on November 14, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) was notified of the solo vehicle collision. CHP units arrived and found a white 2019 Hyundai sedan had collided with a small boulder. It was determined the driver of the sedan had been traveling southbound on SR-89, approaching SR-88 (Picketts Junction).

Restoration of Upper Truckee Marsh completed in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the last three years the California Tahoe Conservancy (Conservancy) has been working on restoring the 1,600-acre Upper Truckee Marsh in South Lake Tahoe. After years of damage caused by development and moves made by ranchers, the river lost its natural meandering flow and has been just one straight channel of water. Now, the work of the Conservancy has completed the steps needed to re-create the wetland with new channels, the filling in of a sailing lagoon, and new willows and other vegetation planted.

Cold nights and a quieter pattern this week in South Lake Tahoe - but what happens over Thanksgiving?

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a week with a recording setting low for the date (2 degrees), and a couple of feet of snow, what's coming will prove to be much milder. The cold conditions continue with an overall quieter pattern for the week ahead.

Longer range guidance still points toward a wetter pattern returning around Nov 21-23, leading into the Thanksgiving Holiday just as travelers hit the roads. The hints of an Atmospheric River will be answered soon.

Sierra-at-Tahoe announces first opening date since the Caldor Fire ripped through it

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - It has taken a large team of dedicated individuals with relentless dedication, working long hours over the last 441 days to bring Sierra-at-Tahoe back from the ruins created by the Caldor Fire to the anticipation of a new ski season.

The Sierra-at-Tahoe Ski Resort announced this weekend they will be ready for the 2022/23 season and reopening on December 3 (weather and Mother Nature permitting). The resort's 75th anniversary season was supposed to be last year, but with only being able to open for a day of celebration, the true party begins in just a few weeks.

South Tahoe High Boys Soccer team and coaches honored for 2022 season

South Tahoe High's 2022 boys' soccer program had an outstanding season. They had the best record since the team won the State title in 2010. This team had one of the league's best defenses which only allowed seven goals overall, eight goals counting conference games. Their offense scored 54 overall goals. In league play, they had five clean sheets, nine clean sheets counting conference games.

Community turns out for South Lake Tahoe Veterans Day ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A large crowd was at the American Legion Hall on Friday for the annual Veterans Day ceremony, one of the largest seen at the outdoor venue in South Lake Tahoe. Post Commander Tom Millham was master of ceremonies which had music from singers Davin Kangas and Jill Scharlow, and bagpiper Maria Delallo, speeches, a POW/MIA ceremony, and a Vietnam Veteran pinning from Daughters of the American Legion's local chapter.

NDOT completes 2nd year of work on SR431 and SR28 - announces next season's projects

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and Q&D Construction have completed the second season of a multi-year project to enhance the existing roadway and utility system along sections of State Routes 431 and 28 to help preserve pavement and protect Lake Tahoe. They will begin the third season next spring.

During the 2022 construction season, crews made the following highway improvements:

- Removed and repaved approximately four inches of aging roadway asphalt on six miles of Mt. Rose highway near the summit

Dressing up for Halloween is always fun for both kids and adults alike. With Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal falling on Halloween this year, wearing costumes was a fun treat for the team members from Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) who came to host and volunteer at the October 31 evening dinner. Dressed as a dinosaur, skeleton, cowgirl, and mouse respectively, Dan Segan, Bridget Cornell, Victoria Ortiz, and Rebecca Cremeen brought both a hot meal and a smile to the faces of the evening’s dinner guests.

Lake Tahoe Historical Society offers giant 3d Paper Flake making class

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is holding its popular Giant 3d Paper Flake Making Class once again this year. Learn how to make the paper flake from one of a dozen patterns. Each participant will make two or more flakes, with one of them for the museum and the other to take home!

All flakes made for the museum will be hanging from the museum's ceiling during the holidays and available for purchase!

The classes will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, November 28, and Tuesday, November 29.

The cost is $10 for members, and $15 for nonmembers.

10,000 more ballots tabulated in El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Ten thousand more ballots have been tabulated since Tuesday, leaving little change in the results for the east slope. There remain approximately 16,000 ballots to be counted. The final count is expected on Tuesday, November 15 at 5 p.m. as the elections office is closed for Veterans Day. So far, 51.92 percent of the county's 138,537 registered voters have had their ballots processed and tabulated.

Nevada Donor Network (NDN) recently hosted it's annual "Hope Dinner" to acknowledge and thank key partners who have made significant efforts during the previous year to make organ, eye, and tissue donation possible in Northern Nevada.

Snow and cold temperatures allow Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar to open early

Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood, and Northstar have all pushed up their opening dates to this Saturday, November 12. Mother Nature delivered the goods and the resorts are ready earlier than expected. The cold weather and snow have allowed for natural snow to accumulate along with their snowmaking teams.

This will be both Northstar's and Kirkwood's 50th anniversary season.

Kirkwood is opening 20 days earlier than expected, and Heavenly and Northstar are a week before what was previously announced.

South Lake Tahoe Carpenter's Union shares Halloween photos from their Heavenly Village booth

The local 1789 Carpenters had a booth at the Heavenly Village Halloween celebration and wanted to share photos of some of those who stopped by.

Heavenly Village held a free Halloween party with multiple stops for candy from businesses in the Village as well as community members like the carpenters who had a booth for the celebrants to come by for candy.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Now that signs of winter are here and temperatures are starting to drop, thoughts turn to warming up in front of an indoor fire. DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Elections Office is notifying county residents about a fake text message being sent out to voters by a third party, pretending to be Senator Catherine Cortez Masto.

The message is not being sent out by County elections officials. If you receive this message, do not reply and disregard it.

Tahoe Fund issues call for 2023 projects around Lake Tahoe

TAHOE CITY, Calif. - The Tahoe Fund has announced the opening of its annual call for projects. The nonprofit is seeking projects for its 2023 portfolio that will increase the pace and scale of forest restoration, improve lake clarity, expand sustainable recreation, provide innovative solutions to transportation challenges and create more stewards of Lake Tahoe. Priority projects will also break down barriers to access and increase inclusion for underserved communities in Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe and Washoe County schools on 2-hour delay, Tahoe Truckee and Douglas open

Due to the snow and road conditions, Lake Tahoe Unified School District is calling for a 2-hour delay start today, November 9.

The bus schedules are posted on the district website, page 2 of the list of schedules.

Washoe county schools are also on a 2-hour delay.

Tahoe Truckee School District is on a regular schedule.

Douglas County School District is not announcing any closures or delays.

LTUSD Focus: Elevated Digital Learning Academy

Each month for the remainder of the school year, Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will feature one of its eight innovative and engaging school sites with a short article intended to educate the community and future families about our local schools, educational programs, and options for students. This month we’d like to highlight Elevated Digital Learning Academy!

Elevated is LTUSD’s online school. The school was born in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic but wow, has online education changed since then!

Israeli Commando of Entebbe to give first hand account of the Greatest Hostage Rescue in History

Chabad at Lake Tahoe will be hosting a historic evening with Major Rami Sherman, a veteran of the Israel Defense Special Operation Forces, on Sunday, November 27.

During the terror-filled years of 1972-1980, Rami served in the Israel Defense Forces’ most elite commando unit. He participated in several covert operations in Israel’s mighty struggle against Arab terrorism.

2022-23 winter season gets started at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe this Friday

With snow still falling at Lake Tahoe, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe has announced they are opening this Friday, November 11. The resort will be closed mid-week, Nov. 14-18 to finish work on the new Lakeview Express chairlift, and reopen for daily operations for the 2022-23 winter season on Saturday, Nov. 19.

Bins around South Lake Tahoe for Toys for Tots, big drop-off date set

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Once again, Toys for Tots is collecting toys and names of children who need them in South Lake Tahoe.

There are drop boxes at hardware stores, banks, fire stations, and Blue Zone Sports.

Stuff-a-Truck with toys will be in the TJMaxx/Blue Zone parking lot in South Lake Tahoe on November 19 from noon to 3 p.m. There will be a fire truck for ids, magic kits for anyone who wants them, treats, swag, and raffle prizes from local donors.

The Road Beat: 2023 Genesis GV60 review

What is it?

The first all-electric vehicle from Genesis, the luxury subdivision of Hyundai/Kia. Slotting in below the GV70 and GV80 SUVs in terms of size, the GV60 isn't any cheaper, but it is wildly more powerful in this spec due to its all-electric powertrain that makes 429 horsepower (and 483 temporarily for extra boost). Does this compact luxury crossover make any sense, though?

Car crashes into boulder on US50 at Echo Summit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A car crashed into a large boulder on US50 Sunday evening, causing some injuries and damage to the vehicle.

At approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 6, a Honda Accord was traveling west on the highway near the area of several rockslides earlier in the year. A boulder almost four feet in width had fallen onto the roadway and the driver of the Honda could not miss it.

Airbags were deployed and the three people in the vehicle had some injuries that were tended to by Lake Valley Fire paramedics. The damaged vehicle was towed away.

Letter: Local Elections Matter

With Americans firmly planted in red and blue camps, rarely coming together to talk about solving our shared problems, it’s easy to get disgruntled about the state of our politics. Elections at the national level have become largely spectator sports, with very few clear opportunities to participate meaningfully in government as intended – of, by, and for the people.

A Veteran’s Musical Tribute and Fireside Chat are both canceled due to expected storm

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Monday night’s Veteran’s Musical Tribute at South Tahoe Middle School has been canceled due to weather. Staff is discussing alternative options and they will inform the public on possible future dates.

Also postponed due to weather is the Lake Tahoe Historical Society's Tuesday evening Fireside Chat at Camp Richardson. With heavy snow expected the speaker's drive from Reno would be challenging and the organizers did not want the public to be unsafe in traveling to the event. A new date will be released shortly.
