Tahoe Climbing Coalition hosts Global Climbing Day social party

Tahoe Climbing Coalition is hosting a global climbing day social party on August 20 at 4 p.m. The event will include beer for those 21 and over, food, and fun climbing games. The event will take place at the Adventure Fit Dojo located at 183 US-50, Suite E, Round Hill, Nev.

This will be a fun social event and opportunity to come and support our local climbing stewardship organization, the Tahoe Climbing Coalition.

Beer provided by Coldwater Brewery and food from Beach Hut Deli.

There will be free climbing at the gym during the event.

Game Time Basketball Camp held in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A basketball camp that was close to never happening, turned into the biggest and most successful camp yet for Game Time Basketball Camps at the South Tahoe Recreation and Swim Complex.

Sixty-seven kids took to the court over the course of the first four days of the camp. Most of the kids were from the South Lake Tahoe and Stateline (El Dorado and Douglas county communities) who had been eagerly awaiting the camp, and they were joined by kids from hundreds of miles away.

Winning plays announced for 2022 Wordwave - performances at Valhalla Boathouse Theatre

Lake Tahoe’s WordWave, a one-act play competition that celebrates up-and-coming playwrights, returns to Valhalla Tahoe on Sept. 11 with a new set of winning plays. Produced as a staged reading, audiences will meet a psychologist on the brink of retirement who suddenly finds himself with two new clients – but one of them is a ghost in Oded Gross’s play “Ghost Writer”; explore the nature of childhood friendships that stay with us throughout life in “The Letter,” by Bill Blush; and consider what makes a life worth living in Tony Pasqualini’s “Benign Departures.”

Extended closure of SR-89 eastbound on-ramp in Truckee starts Monday

TRUCKEE – Caltrans is alerting State Route 89 (SR-89) motorists in Truckee of an upcoming extended closure of the SR-89 south on-ramp to eastbound Interstate 80 (I-80).

The SR-89 south interstate entrance is scheduled to be closed around the clock from 5 a.m. Monday, August 15 through 5 p.m. Friday, September 2 for concrete work. Several concrete slabs are being replaced, which requires extended curing times before reopening to traffic. During the closure, a signed detour will direct motorists along Donner Pass Road to Coldstream Road for access to the I-80 eastbound on-ramp.

Markleeville residents air concerns, some needs are being addressed

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - It has been one week since two days of heavy rain fell over the Tamarack burn scar, causing a mountain of mud and debris to move through the town of Markleeville and creating a large hole under SR-89, closing the main artery for vehicle travel.

The residents of Markleeville voiced their concerns during a Town Hall meeting with the Alpine County Board of Supervisors and Caltrans on August 6, then again during a special BOS meeting on August 10.

Heavenly extends summer activities until October 2

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly is extending its summer operations on weekends through October 2. The resort originally planned to close around Labor Day before preparing for winter operations.

Activities that will remain open include the Ridge Rider Mountain Coaster, Gem Panning, and sightseeing and hiking trail access via the Gondola and Tamarack Express.

These activities as well as food and beverage at Tamarack Lodge and Café Blue will continue Fridays-Sundays during normal operating hours, 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Through Labor Day, summer activities are open daily.

Drainage work scheduled on State Route 89 near Palisades Tahoe

Caltrans is alerting State Route 89 (SR-89) motorists of scheduled one-way traffic control just north of Palisades Tahoe next week for drainage work.

Maintenance crews will be cleaning highway drainage systems from Olympic Valley Road to Goose Meadows Campground between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, August 15 through Thursday, August 18. During this work, one-way traffic control will be required with up to 20-minute travel delays expected.

Letter: No new sales taxes

Our City Council continues to push tax hikes on locals, avoiding any new taxes on tourists. At their last meeting, the Council voted 4-0 to push a new 6% sales tax on cannabis, making permanent what was supposed to be a temporary fee. This tax will require voter approval however - so this November, I’m voting No on measure G - no new taxes on locals.

Mud slides down onto Alpine County home of former South Lake Tahoe business owners

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - The two days of rain that saturated the Tamarack Fire burn scar last week, causing the town of Markleeville to fill with mud and lose their main artery of SR-89, also caused the hillside to slide into the home of former South Lake Tahoe residents, Larry and Casey Braun.

Several feet of mud came into the Braun home and shop on Horsethief Circle in the Mesa Vista area of Alpine County without warning. The wall of mud, debris, and boulders came down and enveloped their home, their shop, and their fifth-wheel trailer.

The Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe’s motto is “Service Above Self” and it is one of the local organizations dedicated to doing active community service. On August 8, Bread & Broth was very fortunate to have the club members sponsor a "Monday Meal Adopt A Day of Nourishment" as part of their community outreach.

Lake Tahoe Community College’s forestry & fire programs receive funding for scholarships, equipment

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA—Lake Tahoe Community College’s (LTCC) new Forestry program will launch this Fall quarter with generous scholarships in place for participating students, thanks to a grant from the Tahoe Fund. The Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at LTCC is also receiving grant funding from the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation for required gear and equipment purchases, allowing even more students to be able to participate in the program.

Vallejo woman arrested after allegedly dragging man from vehicle in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 41-year-old woman from Vallejo, California was arrested on Monday after allegedly dragging a male victim from a vehicle in the Raley's parking lot.

There was a verbal argument Monday morning between Antoinette Sunday Luna and a man in their vehicle in the east parking lot of the grocery center near Stateline. The victim was halfway climbing out of the vehicle when Luna kept driving, dragging him and causing an injury, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Scott Crivelli.

The Lake House Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe expands to outdoor fine dining, doubles capacity

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake House Tahoe, the popular dining establishment in South Lake Tahoe that was once home to Passaretti's, was acquired by the Lake Tahoe AleWorX family of restaurants in February of 2022. Once the transfer from Jeff and Misty Sparrow was finalized with Luca Genasci, the new team quickly got to work on constructing the approved plans for an outdoor patio expansion.

That patio is now completed and open.

Search continues for missing 16-year-old Truckee teen

Multiple agencies and volunteers continue to search for 16-year-old Kiely Rodni, the Truckee teen who was last seen near the Prosser Family Campground at a party early Saturday, August 6, 2022.

The Placer County Sheriff's Office considers her disappearance an abduction case. A $50,000 reward is being offered by the Rodni family. Also, a website, www.findkiely.com has been established by family and friends to aid in the search.

How the public can help residents and businesses of Markleeville

It has been a week since heavy rain and mud flowed through the Alpine County town of Markleeville, causing its main artery of SR-89 to close due to a large 20-foot hole under the road. The closure left no access to the Carson Pass thoroughfare, which most drivers used to travel to and from the town.

Sand Harbor State Park closed for Lake Tahoe Summit on August 16

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Sand Harbor State Park will be closed for the Tahoe Summit from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16. During the closure, only those attending the Tahoe Summit may enter the park. Visitors interested in attending the summit can register at https://takecaretahoe.org/events/2022-lake-tahoe-summit/.

The East Shore Trail will remain open from Tunnel Creek to the Sand Harbor Boat Ramp; however, there will be no access to enter Sand Harbor via the trail. Kokanee Bar and Grill and Clearly Tahoe Rentals will also be closed.

Mobile Outreach Safety Team (MOST) to expand coverage in Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nevada –The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) has announced that the Mobile Outreach Safety Team (MOST) is expanding from two days a week to four days a week.

MOST is a mental health assistance program in Douglas County designed to contact citizens with mental health issues and attempt to get them connected with mental health services in the community. They provide services to all Douglas County residents and visitors who experience mental illness, substance abuse disorders, or suicidal crises.

The Carson Pass Information Station is wrapping up the summer season with a series of activities for youth and adults including Junior Ranger hikes, wildflower and watercolor painting hikes, historical hikes, and naturalist hikes including birds, geology, and trees. Markleeville businesses and residents: "We need help now!"

MARKLEEVILLE, Calif. - When rain fell over the Tamarack Fire burn scar last week, causing the mud to flow down roads and hills, it did much more than wash out SR-89, the main artery between Markleeville and the rest of Alpine County.

It took with it the hopes to finally have a disaster-free summer where businesses could end their busy season on a positive note.

Road Beat - 2022 Acura MDX Type S review: better, but not the best

What is it?

Acura’s venerable MDX SUV turned up a couple of clicks after receiving the ‘Type S’ treatment. Don’t overthink Type S, though, as it’s not the AMG equivalent for Acura (at least not yet, where’s the Type R, Acura?), yet this does bring a raft of hardware and tuning changes to make the most sporting Acura SUV ever. On paper, this new MDX Type S promises to be a more engaging and sporting SUV in their lineup to keep things interesting and hopefully fend off new and updated rivals in the luxury three-row SUV segment.

NHL Vegas Golden Knights Rink Tour stopping in South Lake Tahoe

The Las Vegas Golden Knights will be stopping by the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena for the first leg of their Summer Rink Tours on August 15 at 10 a.m.
They are encouraging all Golden Knights hockey fans to make those "Welcome Signs" and show up early to greet Chance, the Las Vegas Golden Knights Mascot along with one or two of the NHL Vegas Golden Knights players. The tour bus will be parked in the rink parking lot so come down, and snap some pictures with Chance and the bus. There will be pre-autographed handouts for those in attendance.

One arrested for arson and other charges after South Lake Tahoe house fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and vandalism after a fire broke out at his home near the corner of Larch and Figueroa Saturday night.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) was dispatched to the home at 8:31 p.m. on August 6. Upon arrival, they found the home fully involved with fire, with flames along the rear of the home and heavy smoke at the front, according to Battalion Chief Tyler Jack.

Chance of monsoon moisture and isolated thunderstorms to start off week at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another surge of monsoon moisture will yield increased thunderstorm chances through Wednesday, with the potential for heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and strong outflow winds through the region.

Another round of heavy rains from these storms is possible with simulations indicating the potential for up to 1 inch per hour from any storms that develop. There`s even some risk of up to 2 inches per hour on Tuesday. This would result in renewed flash flooding threats, especially on recent burn scars such as the Tamarack, Caldor, and Dixie.

Kudos: Community supports growing tennis program

Making it the largest tournament in its 38 years, 270 players recently participated in the annual Hersh Herschman Memorial Tahoe Classic at Zephyr Cove Park. The four-day annual event that ended July 24 brought even more people to our area for the fun tennis competition.

The tournament is the biggest fundraiser for the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club Foundation. The money raised from the event, including a silent auction and raffle, will help to continue to provide the only organized recreational tennis, with a growing kids program, on the South Shore.

Trip to Green project implemented on US-50 through Placerville - no red lights on highway on selected dates

This weekend is the launch of a new program in Placerville along US-50, Trip to Green. As any traveler knows, traffic can get backed up in Placerville and in an effort to alleviate it, Trip to Green was created. For three weekends this fall, traffic signals on both eastbound and westbound US 50 through the City of Placerville will be set to stay green so that traffic may flow freely.

Interstate 80 travel delays through Truckee anticipated for next four months

TRUCKEE – Travel delays are continuing through November on Interstate 80 (I-80) in Truckee for roadway construction activities.

Motorists are advised to expect typical delays of 15 to 20 minutes when traveling through the work zones on weekdays. However, delays of 25 to 30 minutes are common on Thursday afternoons due to increased weekend travel levels.
