Tahoe Paradise Park seeks proposals for 2023 Music in the Park summer series in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/09/2022 - 9:13amTahoe Paradise Park, otherwise known as Tahoe Paradise Recreations & Park District (TPRPD) in Meyers is seeking an event vendor to assist with their long-running Friday night music summer series program in 2023 and has published a Request For Proposals (RFP) for interested parties.
TPRPD prefers Music-in-the-Park (MITP) events to have a similar 'look & feel' to past MITP events. For this RFP the Park prefers to work with businesses and contractors located within a one-hour drive of the park site, to further support the economy of our region.

Incoming storm upgraded to Winter Storm Warning - possible two feet of snow at lake level
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/08/2022 - 11:04pmFRIDAY UPDATE 9AM: The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has updated the expected storm totals for Lake Tahoe, but they still expect a major winter storm. The new total at lake level is forecast to be more like 12"-22" though Reno forecasters expect the higher number at this time. It will still be a major winter storm but the upper-level low came down offshore instead of over land and resulted in more push into Mono County, but Tahoe will still be impacted. Things will still fluctuate over the Sierra as the storm begins to enter the region.
Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless working through challenges in getting 3rd property open

The funds were used to purchase the Red Lodge, El Nido Motel, and Bear's Den motels.

Upon her passing in 2019, Sandy's husband Keith donated all of his art to the SITS club to be used to raise funds for use at Mt. Tallac, the center of Sandy's heart and passion.

Our South Shore community has been able to sleep better knowing that our homeless population has this option as well. This winter season marks the seventh anniversary of the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) providing warm beds to the most vulnerable in our community.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Ice Arena will be conducting a series of "Learn to Skate" sessions starting Saturday, December 10 at 10:45 a.m. These sessions are geared towards children aged 4 - 10 who would like to learn the basic fundamentals of ice skating.
The first session on the 10th is "FREE" and all other sessions are $10 and pay-as-you-go. The sessions will focus on balance, learning how to fall, getting back up, strides, and fun, fun, fun. All sessions are for children only.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/07/2022 - 7:47pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Truckee from Friday evening to Sunday night.
Heavy snow is possible with total accumulations of 20 to 30 inches, except 2 to 4 feet above 7000 feet with up to 5 feet of snow on the crest possible. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph.
The heaviest snowfall rates are anticipated Saturday and Sunday. The combination of heavy snow and wind may bring periods of whiteout conditions.
South Tahoe High grad McCallan Castles heading to play football for Tennessee
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/07/2022 - 6:08pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since graduating from South Tahoe High School in 2018, McCallan Castles has been showing the rest of the football world what South Lake Tahoe already knew the athlete could do.
Castles, who has been playing for U.C. Davis Aggies for the past three years, announced Wednesday that he will be playing for the Tennessee Volunteers next fall. He started his collegiate career with the Cal Bears, playing three games for them in 2018. He transferred to UC Davis early in 2019. The psychology major has one year of eligibility to use at Tennessee.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to forecasted inclement weather, the Festival of Winter Lights will be held for one night only on Friday, December 9 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Unfortunately, the Saturday portion has been canceled.
Organizers are disappointed with this change but are still very excited to invite the public out to enjoy the event for one evening. This change will have no impact on the festivities, vendor line-up, or entertainment schedule for Friday night.

Nevada Gaming: South Shore Lake Tahoe casino gaming win up 13%, statewide up 4.83%
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/06/2022 - 10:52pmNevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,280,704,342 for the month of October 2022, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's monthly report. This amounts to a 4.83 percent increase compared to October 2021, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,221,749,941. For the fiscal year (July 1, 2022 through October 31, 2022), the gaming win has increased by 3.02 percent.
The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.
New South Lake Tahoe resident arrested on grand theft charges, outstanding warrants
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/06/2022 - 8:49pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Sandeep Kumar, 29, was arrested by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on November 17. He is accused of stealing several hundred dollars from his employer.
According to SLTPD Sgt. Russell Liles, Kumar is a new resident of South Lake Tahoe and had worked for the business he allegedly stole from for only a couple of weeks. Upon arrest, it was discovered Kumar had outstanding warrants including one from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Barton Hospital seeing uptick in flu cases and hospitalizations

"We continue to see an uptick in respiratory infections including influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and other respiratory viruses, with the highest concentration in pediatric populations," said Dr. Tamara McBride, Barton's Director of Hospital Medicine, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and Infection Control.
Happy ending found in Northern Nevada for puppies, mother dog rescued from abusive breeder
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/06/2022 - 4:13pmThe Nevada Humane Society recently assisted in a large-scale rescue effort of nearly 300 abused dogs and puppies in Nye County.
While many rescued dogs were taken to different parts of the country to rehabilitate or be adopted, many found their forever homes in our local region of Northern Nevada.
The dogs in question were Caucasian Shepherds, from a failed breeding facility that turned into a nightmare for the animals involved.
While there are many ethical breeding kennels operating in Nevada, the individuals who owned the hundreds of shepherds were not among them.

Organizer and MC for the evening, Dreu Murin, welcomed the crowd to the evening's festivities which included incoming El Dorado County Sheriff Jeff Leikauf, Miss El Dorado County Carson Leikauf, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and South Lake Tahoe Police Department, and of course, Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus.
Tahoe Fund matching donations to Ski Run Community Park up to $100,000

The Eastern Nevada History series at the Wylder Hotel Hope Valley will continue on Sunday, December 11 with a living history presentation of Snowshoe Thompson.
Thompson was known as the Mailman of the Sierra as he carried the mail across the Sierra Nevada winter snows for 20 years. He would travel the 180-mile round trip in just five days on his hand-crafted snow skates (skis) with nothing more than a jacket, dried meat, matches, and his 80-pound bag of mail.
The program starts at 1 p.m., is free, open to the public, and is presented inside the Resort’s heated tent.

A Winter Weather Warning is still in effect until 1 p.m. Monday. Rejuvenated moisture is forecast to arrive late overnight/early Monday morning. Expect conditions to once again degrade from Alpine county northward. After Monday afternoon, precipitation should be more showery in nature, reducing the overall threat, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

TAHOMA, Calif. - The community is invited to join in the holiday fun on Saturday, December 3 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Marie Sluchak Park in Tahoma for the Holiday Gala.
Santa will arrive in a sled disguised as a fire truck, complete with sirens and lights! Santa's helper, Ed Miller, will be the Master of Ceremonies for the evening.

Decorating for the holidays is a tradition in homes all over the world but be sure to decorate safely. According to the National Fire Protection Association, almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems and more than two of every five decoration fires happen because decorations are placed too close to a heat source.

Richard Kenneth Hertzog ~ December 9,1949 - November 4, 2022
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/02/2022 - 6:33pmRichard (Rick) Kenneth Hertzog passed peacefully at Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. on Friday, November 4, 2022. He was 72 years old. He was surrounded by his wife Cindy, nieces Julia Ryan and Kathy Partida, and nephew Reuben Partida. His sister-in-law Dianne Ford, niece Sherri Newmyer, and nephew Daniel Maslyar had been with Rick since Thursday morning when he had been admitted to Barton Hospital. Rick’s brother Bruce Hertzog was en route when Rick passed. So many friends, neighbors, coworkers, and acquaintances came to pay their respects and say goodbye.

As a county, 89,823 voters of the 138,537 registered voters turned out, or 64.84 percent. In South Lake Tahoe, 45.55 percent of the registered voters turned in ballots.

Column: Partnering to reduce wildfire risk in the Lake Tahoe Basin

Since then, the California Tahoe Conservancy has received over four times the usual number of calls and emails about our open space lots. Most people contacting us have questions about wildfire risk and dead or dying trees.
New Winter Storm Watch issued for Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/01/2022 - 5:55pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Sierras have not yet said "goodbye" to the latest storm, but the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Lake Tahoe Basin for Saturday from 4 a.m. to Monday at 4 a.m.
With the new storm, heavy snow is possible with additional snow accumulations of 8 to 18 inches, except above 7000 feet where 1 to 3 feet are possible.
Winds and snow creating havoc on Lake Tahoe roads Thursday, especially I80
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/01/2022 - 3:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Interstate 80 crossing the Sierra Nevada is closed at this hour after visibility concerns rose with high winds and blowing snow.
Shortly before closing, CalTrans urged drivers to not travel on I-80 in the Sierra today unless they absolutely must. No ETO on reopening.
Chain controls on US50 start at Pollock Pines from the west, and Clear Creek River above Carson City from the east.
Watch conditions on SR88 as CalTrans will be doing avalanche control through the duration of the storm.

Prescribed fire operations overnight concern some Lake Tahoe residents
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/01/2022 - 3:27pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A prescribed fire operation above Fallen Leaf Lake on the Anogra Ridge caused some concern from area residents Wednesday evenings. Flames and images on heat maps were seen, prompting phone calls to fire officials.
The U.S. Forest Service was working on a planned fire, igniting 40 acres of piles primarily on the north side of Angora Ridge.
Holiday Tree Lane to raise funds for local nonprofits in South Lake Tahoe area

This year’s “parade of trees” includes twelve trees, each uniquely decorated by a local business and dedicated to raising funds for a cause.
The community is invited to view the trees and enter the raffle now through December 16 by going to bit.ly/HolidayTreeLane. Tickets start at $5 per entry, $20 for five entries, and $100 for 25 entries. 100 percent of the proceeds go to nonprofit organizations. The trees are also available to view at each business location.
