Douglas County inmate attempts suicide with sheet
Submitted by admin on Wed, 07/06/2016 - 3:33pmAn unidentified inmate at the Douglas County Jail in Minden attempted suicide over the weekend by tying a sheet around his neck.
On July 1 at about 2:45 p.m., paramedics were summoned to the jail for an unconscious male. The 49-year-old male was not breathing. Deputies began CPR while the fire department was responding.
The inmate was transported to a local hospital. He has since returned to custody at the DCSO jail. The inmate was in custody for a probation violation originally related to a DUI 3rd offense.

Douglas County students participate in gang resistance training program

The annual G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program has lessons from Deputies Teresa Duffy and Chris Wiggins which wrapped up with a four-day adventure event at Lake Tahoe.
Wenck won't seek reelection; Retiring from LTCC board after 42 years

Volunteers pick up thousands of pounds of holiday trash
Submitted by admin on Tue, 07/05/2016 - 10:03pmHundreds of volunteers hit the Lake Tahoe beaches on Tuesday to clean up after the holiday revelers who flocked to area beaches to celebrate the 4th of July.
The League to Save Lake Tahoe coordinated the trash pick up efforts at nine area beaches. Their volunteers gathered almost 1,600 pounds of trash which included 7,738 cigarette butts.
Single-use plastics were the second-most commonly found category of trash, following cigarette butts.
Three new bears arrive at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care
Submitted by admin on Tue, 07/05/2016 - 7:38pmThree bear cubs arrived in South Lake Tahoe Tuesday, after their mother was killed in a car accident in Yosemite on July 4.
Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care Co-Founder Tom Milham drove to Lee Vining this morning, to meet people from Yosemite and transferred the cubs to his car.
As is the norm with LTWC, bears are named by the region they come from, so these cubs, about four-five months old, are named Yosemite 1, Yosemite 2 and Yosemite 3.
Firefighters gain upper hand on the Trailhead Fire; 5,595 acres burned and 60% contained
Submitted by admin on Tue, 07/05/2016 - 7:05pmFirefighting officials expect the Trailhead Fire burning west of Lake Tahoe to be fully contained by Saturday, July 9. So far, the fire has burned 5,595 since it started on June 28. It is now 60 percent contained.
All mandatory evacuations have been lifted over the fire evacuation area.
Some firefighting personnel are being pulled off the fire, and more are expected to leave in the next couple of days, leaving some to continue mop up.

Forest thinning project resumes at the North Shore of Lake Tahoe
Submitted by admin on Tue, 07/05/2016 - 6:44pmThinning of trees for fuels reduction and forest health will resume on Thursday, July 7 on approximately 178 acres of National Forest System lands on the northeast side of Highway 267, north of Lake Vista Road above Kings Beach and Tahoe Vista. Mechanical whole tree removal will take place off Forest Road 16N52 over the next several months and the area will be closed for public safety.
Candidates sought for two South Lake Tahoe City Council seats

On July 18 at 9:00 a.m., filing opens, and it goes until August 12 at 5:00 p.m., or until August 17 at 5:00 p.m. if an incumbent does not run.
Number of arrests over 4th of July weekend in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/05/2016 - 4:20pmFor the 96 hours that made up the 4th of July weekend this year, South Lake Tahoe police arrested 27 people, nine of them on the holiday.
SLTPD Chief Brian Uhler said they could have made more arrests, but his officers look for a peaceful solution. If there is a sober adult in the situation, police will many times let them take care of the person in their party who'd been drinking. This leaves officers available and on the streets in case of emergencies, and not tied up with paperwork.

Latest Lake Tahoe fatality identified
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/05/2016 - 3:53pmThe man whose unconscious body was found on June 25 near a jet ski on Lake Tahoe has been identified.
A passerby found 21-year-old Jawahar Kaliyamurthy floating near the unoccupied jet ski east of Meeks Bay at about 11:38 a.m. on the 25th, called for help, pulled the man from the water and began CPR.
Virginia City fireworks start wildfire, show ends early
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/04/2016 - 11:15pmA fire started after embers from the Virginia City fireworks show landed in nearby brush at about 10:10 p.m., causing the show to end early.
Originally, the Storey County Sheriff reported the fire to be 4.5 acres, but the reports Tuesday morning say one acre. It is now fully contained.
The start of the fireworks show was delayed 30 minutes because of winds in the area according to the Storey County Manager. After the show had been on for 5-10 minutes, the fire started.
No injuries were reported.

Three new message signs were unveiled in South Lake Tahoe this week, just in time for the holiday weekend. Since the fourth of July is a big tourist draw, it is the perfect time to test out all the message signs can provide to those on the road.
Red Flag wind warnings on Tuesday; Cooling temperatures ahead
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/04/2016 - 10:39pmThe post-holiday week starts off with a Lake Wind Advisory on Lake Tahoe and Red Flag Warnings across Western Nevada. Expect winds in South Lake Tahoe to be 5-15 mph during the day and evening, with gusts up to 25 mph.
The Lake Wind Advisory is from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Carson City and Reno winds will be up to 35 mph.
The rest of the week's forecast from the National Weather Service:
Tonight - Clear, with a low around 47. Southwest wind around 5 mph.
Tuesday - Widespread haze. Sunny, with a high near 75. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
$583 million to be spent on California roads; Over $36 million in SLT

One major project in South Lake Tahoe has been adopted.

Suspect wanted during South Lake Tahoe standoff arrested

Sean Wanamaker, 31, was been arrested by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, brandishing a weapon, and violation of parole. Wanamaker's parole terms included not stepping foot into the South Lake Tahoe city limits.
Reno police officer shoots man driving van towards pedestian filled street
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/03/2016 - 5:27pmA driver of a minivan that was headed to a closed Reno Street full of pedestrians on Saturday was shot and killed by a police officer on foot.
The incident began at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 3 when a Reno Police Department Motor Unit attempted to make a traffic stop on a silver minivan in the area on Kuenzli Street and E. 2nd Street. The minivan failed to yield, proceeding west toward downtown Reno.

Six-hour stand off ends at Motel 6 in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/02/2016 - 9:59pmAn almost six-hour long standoff in the parking lot of the South Lake Tahoe Motel 6 parking lot has ended, with no suspect in custody, though a warrant has been issued for 31-year-old Sean Wanamaker.
South Lake Tahoe Police officers were called to the area Saturday afternoon after a person said a man got into an argument with someone in the parking lot, and that he brandished a handgun, then went into a trailer parked at the motel.

Saturday crash sends one to hospital
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/02/2016 - 8:55pmOne man was transported to Barton Hospital Saturday evening after a collision between his Kia and a van near the intersection of Black Bart Avenue and Martin Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.
According to CHP Officer Shannon Samas, the driver, a man about 40-years-old, was reported to be driving in and out of his lane when he and the van collided.
No names have been released, but Samas said the male had mild to moderate injuries and was transported.
No other details are known at the time and the details of the crash are under investigation.
Pyrotechnic crews finish up preparations for Lake Tahoe fireworks show

"We love out job," said Zambelli Fireworks Western Region Project Manager John Hagan. "We can use explosives to make people happy."
Zambelli is the company hired to produce the 25 minute pyrotechnic show over Lake Tahoe on July 4, starting at 9:45 p.m.

As of today, she's left the Chamber and is now preparing for a new career in coaching, leadership and training.
El Dorado Hills bank robber appears to be same as South Shore suspect
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/01/2016 - 4:42pmThe El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) is working on the strong possibility that a man who robbed the Chase Bank in El Dorado Hills on Friday is the same man who robbed the US Bank on Kingsbury Grade on Wednesday. Lt. Jim Byers of EDSO told South Tahoe Now that the moment the photo of the suspect came out, deputies in South Lake Tahoe saw the resemblance and notified him.
Apollo Global to buy Diamond Resorts for $2.2 billion

Apollo Global's offer of $30.25 per share in cash represents a premium of about 26 percent to Diamond Resorts' closing stock price on Tuesday. Shares of Diamond rose to $30.00 in morning trading, just shy of the offer price.
The deal follows a series of mergers in the hospitality industry this year.

South Lake Tahoe bank robbed Friday; second South Shore bank robbery in three days
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/01/2016 - 1:04pm8:30 p.m. update 7/1/16: The investigation of Friday's bank robbery at the Al Tahoe branch of El Dorado Savings led to the identification of Gabriel Antonio Evans, 36, of South Lake Tahoe as the suspect.
Detectives secured an arrest warrant for Evans and a search warrant for his residence in the 3000 block of Riverside Avenue. Due to Evan’s past violent criminal history, the SWAT team was employed to make the arrest. Officers, assisted by the FBI, arrested Evans at his residence at 7:45 p.m. this evening.
Missing South Lake Tahoe woman
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/01/2016 - 11:09amThe South Lake Tahoe Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating an at-risk missing person. 52-year-old Jeannette Marie Chapman hasn't been seen or heard from since June 29.
She is described as 5'06", brown hair with blue eyes and weighs 285 lbs.
Chapman was last known to be living in the area of 3740 Blackwood Road in South Lake Tahoe, CA. Chapman has a medical condition which may require her to seek medical attention.

Blue Go out, TTD in, as operations change July 1
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/30/2016 - 7:58pmThe Tahoe Transportation District will assume daily operations of the bus transit system in South Lake Tahoe beginning July 1, and along with that change is a new name. Blue Go is out, and TTD is in.
42 buses make up the local system which have more than 800,000 trips annually on their routes which cover both sides of the state line including commuter bus service from the lake to Carson City and the Carson Valley.
Gaming revenues drop again for South Shore casinos
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/30/2016 - 7:44pmIncome for casinos on the South Shore was down again in May, 2016, recording a 15.12 percent drop in gaming win when compared to income from a year ago, the highest percentage drop in Nevada. They had a "win" of $13,709,097.
The gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.
For the fiscal year, the local casinos continue to be off from last year, with a drop in the gaming win by 4.75 percent.

Memories of Bob were shared by his family and friends in front of the Osgood Toll House (OTH), the oldest standing commercial building at Lake Tahoe. It was Bob's desire to be remembered through Lake Tahoe's history. Over $4,000 in donations were received in his memory for the restoration of the OTH. Plans for the next phase were unveiled.

July 11, 2016 - 10:00am Auditions will be held for Missoula Children's Theatre production of Pinocchio on Monday, July 11 at South Tahoe Middle School Multi-Purpose Room from 10:00 to 12:00. Those auditioning should arrive at 10:00 and plan to stay for the full two hours. Auditions are free and if cast there is a $50 per child fee to participate in this week long theater experience. A limited number of scholarships are available by calling Peggy Blowney at 530 542-3632.

No change in service expected as ambulance services change on South Shore

The final touches to the new Cal Tahoe JPA service agreements were made Wednesday in preparation for a change from the City of South Lake Tahoe operating the ambulances that serve the city, to the function being part of the JPA at 12:01 a.m. Friday.
