John Vanek, author of the book, The Essential Abolitionist: What You Need to Know about Human Trafficking & Modern Slavery, will be speaking in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, April 26 at 6:00 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe library.
The Friends of the Library are hosting the free event which will feature Vanek, who is a retired lieutenant of the San Jose Police Human Trafficking Task Force. Vanek will address the most commonly asked questions and topics surrounding human trafficking and the challenges involved in fighting this horrific crime and assisting its victims.

South Lake Tahoe's Krista Kline Carson is battling cancer after a tumor removed from her brain was found to be Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme, one of the fastest growing brain cancers.
She has been an inspiration to many, and to support her a group of friends has put together a fundraiser on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe Police Chief: Updates on crime, cleanup and murder case
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/03/2016 - 5:45pmGreat news! Compared to last year, our violent crime rate is down 41% (from 112 occurrences in 2014 to 66 in 2015). The news is not all good. Our property crime rate is up 6% (from 516 in 2014 to 548 in 2015). This was not unexpected as we reported on a significant upward trend in property crime 6 months ago. Total crime is down 2.2% over last year.
Smokey Bear visits South Lake Tahoe Head Start class

They were there to teach the pre=kindergarten students about fire safety and fire prevention.
Missing Spinoni Italiano dogs may have been spotted in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/03/2016 - 1:40pmSouth Tahoe Now and Carson Now carried the story of a helicopter search for missing Spinoni Italiano dogs near Carson City, and now reports of the two pets being spotted in South Lake Tahoe are coming in.
On Friday night, owners Stacey and Lorne Bell were walking the dogs, Mara and Adele, in east Carson City along the Carson River and on the ridges in the Mexican Dam area. As Stacey went to take a photo, the dogs broke loose and took off running, possibly after a rabbit.

March 5, 2016 - 10:00am We lost a beautiful, vibrant spirit much too soon. Our beloved Carolyn Batchelor left us February shortly after Valentine's Day, and our hearts are broken.
Carolyn Wands was born in Nampa, Idaho. She was the only child of Dr. Robert and Eileen Wands. At the age of eighteen Carolyn moved to Ontario, California, with her husband, Steve Batchelor. She, Steve, and their children lived in Cucamonga and Crestline.
California Assembly votes to raise smoking age to 21, seeks e-cigarette bans
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/03/2016 - 11:33amIn an effort to target young smokers and keep them away from the harm of nicotine, the California Assembly voted to raise the smoking age from 18 to 21 on Thursday. If it passes the Senate, California would be among the first states to raise the smoking age. Hawaii has already done so, and it appears New Jersey isn't far behind.
Last year, the state Senate approved the bill but it stalled for months in the Assembly, so many legislature observers in Sacramento think the move to raise the smoking age won't face much opposition.

Scam targeting South Lake Tahoe businesses
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/02/2016 - 8:32pmTwo South Lake Tahoe businesses lost almost $1,000 each this past week when scammers called them, demanding payment of an electrical bill or their power would be shut off.
In both cases, individuals claiming to represent Liberty Utilities called the businesses and demanded payment. The business owners were directed to purchase a prepaid credit card and then call them back with the card number.
Liberty Utilities representatives will not place calls to customers for payment.

Active weather pattern heading toward Lake Tahoe and the Sierra
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/02/2016 - 6:35pmAfter a month of temperatures close to record breaking and very little precipitation, South Lake Tahoe will see a series of storms heading to the Sierra starting Thursday, March 3.
The active weather pattern actually begins this weekend as a series of moderate to strong atmospheric river type storms impact the Sierra this weekend and into next week, according to the National Weather Service.
There is a 30 percent chance of rain on Thursday and Thursday evening which would be mostly in the form of rain due to a high of 52 degrees and a low of 32.

Carson City family charters helicopter to search for missing dogs

The owners of the Spinoni Italiano dogs are Stacey and Lorne Belt. The dogs, Mara and Adele, escaped while the couple were walking.
On Friday night the couple were with their dogs in east Carson City along the Carson River and on the ridges in the Mexican Dam area. As Stacey went to take a photo, the dogs broke loose and took off running, possibly after a rabbit.
Rude Brothers looks for new home after building is sold

Rude Brother's Bagels is located on the bottom floor of a building located at 3117 Harrison Avenue in South Lake Tahoe. The current owners of the popular coffee and bagel shop, Jim and Lisa Gosh, have been in the same location since 2001 after buying the business from Steve Rude.
Dr. Seuss' birthday celebrated at Bijou Community School
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/02/2016 - 3:14pmThe iconic Dr. Seuss would have been 112 years old today, and even though not still living, his birthday is celebrated with top hats, green eggs and ham and lots of reading out of his collection of books that has delighted generations.
Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Mass., and adopted the name Dr. Seuss when he was in college.
In honor of his birthday, students at Bijou Community School in South Lake Tahoe celebrated with stories, costumes and green eggs and ham.
Man's body found off Timber Cove Pier in South Lake Tahoe

The body of a 53-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was pulled out of the water by the Timber Cove Pier Monday afternoon.
At 3:28 p.m. on February 29, 2016, South Lake Tahoe Police received a call of a drowning victim in the water at the Timber Cove Pier, just off Connolly Beach and behind the Tahoe Beach Retreat & Lodge.
When officers arrived, the found the local man deceased in a few feet of water.

The lone new business item was for the creation of a City policy where local parades are concerned, an item requested to be placed on the agenda by Councilmember JoAnn Conner.
Jaycee Lee Dugard releases new book about life after captivity

They remember what they were doing when they heard, and the national focus the community got in the following days. This was the day Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped as she walked up Washoan Blvd. on her way to her bus stop.
The community of South Lake Tahoe rejoiced along with the world 18 years later on August 26, 2009 when she was found and her kidnappers, Phillip and Nancy Garrido were arrested.

South Lake Tahoe locals graduate from STAT training program
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/01/2016 - 12:57pmSouth Lake Tahoe citizens who graduated from the most recent South Tahoe Action Team (STAT) training sessions were honored during Tuesday's city council meeting.
The STAT program is designed to incorporate trained citizens in the field with the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and other first responders during times of crisis. This is the first program of its kind in the Tahoe Basin.
"Our disaster preparedness capability is much better because of this class," said Fire Chief Jeff Meston.

Weather - South Lake Tahoe will have a high today of 60 and a low tonight of 34. Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 60. Breezy, with a south wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 34. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph.
Long awaited storm due to hit Lake Tahoe this weekend
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/29/2016 - 9:49pmA fairly dry February didn't add much needed water to the Sierra snowpack, but a storm system heading to the Lake Tahoe this weekend may help make up the deficit.
Low pressure will brush by the region and produce gusty winds on Tuesday afternoon and evening. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect for both Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake on Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Southwest winds from 15-25 mph are expected with gusts up to 40 mph.
Erica Mirich hired by League to Save Lake Tahoe as Director of Development

A competitive national search brought Mirich back to Lake Tahoe previously served as director of development for the Lake Tahoe School in Incline Village. Most recently she served as senior director of annual giving for the Stevenson School in Pebble Beach, Calif.
Mirich holds a master’s degree in science education from Harvard and brings classroom experience as a science educator.
Missing ski instructor Carson May found in five feet of snow
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/29/2016 - 6:07pmTwo search and rescue teams training in the snow at the Sugar Bowl Resort on Monday found the body of missing ski instructor Carson May.
The El Dorado County Search and Rescue dog teams, along with the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue team, located May under five feet of snow in an avalanche prone out-of-bounds area at the resort.
Carson May, 23, was a ski instructor at the resort and went missing Jan. 15, 2016. He was not found despite an intensive, four-day search by dozens of volunteers and law enforcement officers.
Harveys adds Steve Miller Band and Slightly Stoopid to summer lineup

Slighty Stoopid is coming on Saturday, July 2 as a part of their Return of the Red Eye Summer 2016 Tour. Special supporting guests include SOJA, as well as Zion I, The Grouch and Eligh. The general admission tickets start at $37.50 each.
Lake Valley Fire maintenance shop earns honor

This makes their maintenance shop one of only two facilities in the Tahoe Basin to receive this distinguished honor. Body of missing Lake Tahoe woman found at Emerald Bay
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/29/2016 - 1:57pmA Search and Rescue team from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office found the body of Carolyn Batchelor, the Zephyr Cove woman who was reported missing on February 17.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office had been searching for the 69-year-old woman when her car was found parked at Inspiration Point overlooking Emerald Bay on February 19. At that time, the car was covered in a foot of snow from recent snowfall.
Missing dog from Fresno finds way to South Lake Tahoe

Two months after a dog went missing from a Fresno family's home, he showed up in South Lake Tahoe. How he got to the lake is unknown, and the truth most likely will never be uncovered.
On the day after Christmas, 2015, Toby the dog escaped from his yard after someone lifted the fence to break into the family's home after they had left for a two day trip to Las Vegas.

10:29 p.m. - Burglary - 17-YEAR-OLD MALE JUVENILE UNLAWFULLY ENTERED LOCKED SAFE THAT WAS INSIDE LOCKED CLOSET IN MEYERS.

Four arrested after high speed chase through Douglas County and South Lake Tahoe crime

Two different high speed chases through the Carson Valley and up Kingsbury Grade resulted in the arrest of two men and two women on Saturday, February 27, 2017.
At 3:10 p.m., a trooper from the Nevada Highway Patrol spotted a silver Mercedes-Benz with California plates going down U.S. 50 (Spooner Summit) at 85 mph. The driver failed to pull over for the trooper, instead turning South on Highway 395 towards Minden, Nev., at speeds in excess of 100 mph.
Soroptimists honor women in the South Lake Tahoe community

On Thursday night, members from the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra and Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe clubs presented their annual Violet Richardson, Live your Dream, and Ruby awards at Harrah's Tahoe.
Whittell Warriors crowned state champs after 53-48 win at Lawlor
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/28/2016 - 8:56amFor the second time in three years, the Whittell High School boys basketball team has won the Nevada state championship.
The win was the Warriors 25th consecutive win. They wrapped up their 2016 season with an overall record of 27-2.
On Saturday at Lawlor Event Center at the University of Nevada Reno, Whittell beat Word of Life Christian Academy out of Las Vegas, 53-48, earning them the NIAA Division IV crown.
