Prescribed burning to continue next week around Lake Tahoe

Operations are scheduled near Sugar Pine Point, Brockway Summit, Incline Village, Glenbrook, Lower Kingsbury Grade, Ski Run Boulevard, Lake Tahoe Airport, Fallen Leaf Lake and Meyers.

She will be coming to the South Lake Tahoe Library to discuss her books, poetry, and the ordinary yet extraordinary madness of her life. Her books will be available for purchase. All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Library and the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless. Open to all.

Deputy accidentally shoots bear with live bullet in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/06/2017 - 3:12pmA Washoe County Sheriff's deputy trying to scare off a group of bears in Incline Village Saturday morning shot the mother bear with a live round instead of a rubber round.
At approximately 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2017, deputies responded to a report of a group of bears near residences in the area of Driver Way and Village Boulevard in Incline Village.
On arrival, deputies encountered a mother bear and three cubs. This group of bears had been previously identified as food aggressive and deputies have had numerous encounters with this group in recent weeks.
South Lake Tahoe Mayor Sass: Teamwork, roads and VHRs

This came after a survey was completed and results were presented by the outside independent company contracted by the city. The results indicated that almost 68% of the survey respondents supported the increase as long as the funds would be dedicated by law to roads.

TrapBags installed along Carson River to prevent flooding in Douglas County
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/05/2017 - 8:04pmA temporary levee-like barrier has been placed along the East Fork of the Carson River near the Aspen Mobile Home Park in anticipation of flooding as the snow continues to melt in the Sierra.
Douglas County, Carson Valley Conservation District and the mobile home park worked together to get on a temporary fix called "TrapBag." 600 feet of these barriers were installed along the river.
South Lake Tahoe area rivers and creeks over banks, some flooding in Tahoe Keys
Submitted by admin on Fri, 05/05/2017 - 3:00pmAbove average temperatures combined with an above average, and still deep, snowpack in the Sierra has led to the flooding of the Upper Truckee River, Trout Creek and Cold Creek in South Lake Tahoe. The extra water in the river has also led to slight flooding on Colorado Avenue in the Tahoe Keys.
New format for Master Gardeners plant sale in South Lake Tahoe

Natives and other perennials need more time to grow out of their overwintering slumber so the sale will be held in two segments. Vegetable plants will be sold at the Ski Run Farmers Market on friday, June 9 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (or until all plants have been sold) and the Natives and Perennials will be sold on Saturday, September 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Sierra House Elementary School.

Since then, a call to prayer has continued from President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” in 1863 to an annual national day of prayer signed by a joint resolution by Congress in 1952 that was signed by President Truman.
Now, the National Day of Prayer is held on the first Thursday in May.

Prepare for increase in mosquitoes this spring and summer
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/04/2017 - 11:54amWith increased water in the area from recent winter and spring storms that brought record-breaking precipitation into the area, Douglas County Emergency Management and Mosquito Abatement General Improvement District is expecting more mosquitos in Douglas County this season.
Typically mosquito breeding sites in Douglas County are monitored starting April 1. The long winter has not allowed for this process. Standing water creates opportunities for mosquitoes to develop and bites from mosquitoes can transmit diseases to people and animals.

Day in and day out our local Humane Society answers the needs of people who have lost their cat or dog or those who have been forced to move to a place where their pets are not allowed. They host spay and neutering clinics to help with over population and other pet inoculation issues. This past Christmas I saw them giving out pet food to those who were too poor to feed their pets.

Azul Latin Kitchen in the Heavenly Village will be having a Cinco de Mayo party on Friday to raise funds for Tahoe Youth & Family Services. From drink specials to a dunking booth, the fun will be a unique way to celebrate the holiday South Lake Tahoe style.
From 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on May 5, the public can enjoy drink specials, a frozen t-shirt contest (see the video in this story), dunking booth, a silent auction and fun and surprises.
All funds raised go to support the agency which has provided counseling, mentoring and support programs to the community since 1971.

Changes ahead in South Lake Tahoe forecast
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/04/2017 - 5:58amThe warm weather has been a welcome relief from a long, wet winter, but the dry and sunny days are gone from the from the forecast for at least a week. The National Weather Service says to expect showers, thunderstorms and even snow (sorry) as unsettled weather passes through the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Here is their forecast:
Today - Isolated showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 78. Light south wind becoming southwest 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Tonight - Partly cloudy, with a low around 44. Southwest wind around 10 mph.
Lake Tahoe Humane Society regrouping after director fired

They are now facing challenges after their Executive Director Niki Congero was fired when allegations of embezzlement arose when their bank called them about irregular activity on the agency's debit card.
Tahoe Roads launches new brand and improved website

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has now included information on roads around the lake, including information from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT).
The goals of the website are to:
- Educate the public on the benefits of the construction happening around the lake
- Keep the public and partners updated on project details and roadwork schedules
185,000 guests used Airbnb this winter in Sierra; Hosts earned $32 million

More than 185,000 visitors booked rooms or homes from Airbnb hosts during the 2016-17 winter, up 48 percent from last winter. Also on the rise were earnings by hosts, revealing the surge of short-term rentals that have put neighbors against neighbors, and had community leaders grappling with their impact on neighborhoods.
Some USFS campgrounds in Lake Tahoe opening May 12
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/03/2017 - 2:10pmSnow is preventing some Lake Tahoe West Shore campgrounds from opening, but others are ready to go beginning May 12, 2017.
The West Shore campgrounds still have a large amount of snow at lake level which is causing the delay in their opening. Meeks Bay Campground will open on May 19, and Kaspian and William Kent campgrounds will open on June 2.
Fallen Leaf Campground will open May 12, but some sites will be closed due to wet conditions.

Squaw Valley attempting to keep one lift open all summer long

USFS announces West Shore fuels reduction project

The West Shore Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Fuels Reduction and Forest Health Project will treat approximately 4,875 acres extending from Emerald Bay to Burton Creek State Park.
Voters may see 1/2 cent sales tax increase measure on November ballot

A half-cent sales tax increase in the city limits would bring in enough funds to start a preventative maintenance program as well as fixing current problems, something Assistant Public Works Director Jim Marino said they've wanted for over ten years.

Upper Truckee Marsh closed to dogs through July 31
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/02/2017 - 2:33pmDogs are currently banned from the Upper Truckee Marsh area due to protection of a critical breeding habitat for special, threatened and endangered species such as the Willow Flycatcher and Yellow Warbler.
The California Tahoe Conservancy announced today its annual seasonal dog closure which will be in place July 31.
Beginning August 1, dogs will again be permitted access to the Upper Truckee Marsh, if they are on leash. The Conservancy-owned Cove East property, west of the river, remains open for year-round, leashed dog access.
Linkin Park with Machine Gun Kelly to play at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Concert series

They will hit the stage with special guest Machine Gun Kelly.
In an effort to put tickets into the hands of real fans, first access to tickets for the One More Light World Tour will be reserved exclusively for fans – not scalpers or bots, just as Eric Church has done with his tour (he follows Linkin Park on September 2 and 3).
Last day of school for South Lake Tahoe students announced

The California Department of Education (CDE) granted five of the seven days applied for, making the last day of school Tuesday, June 20, 2017.

Plumber's torch sets off fire at Alder Inn in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/02/2017 - 6:06amDamage was kept to a minimum after a quick response by firefighters from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue on Monday afternoon at the Alder Inn on Ski Run Boulevard.
The fire started on the first floor where a plumber was working with a torch. It went into the second floor through plumbing chases.
"A quick and aggressive fire attack minimized damage to the structure," SLTFR said on their Facebook page.
The call came in at 1:30 p.m. May 1.
Sierra House Elementary raising funds for Charlie Cart Project

SLT Police stepping up responses to complaints of homeless and transients
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/01/2017 - 10:18pmDuring the spring and summer of 2016, the City of South Lake Tahoe received many complaints for homeless people causing safety and health problems in parks and public places, mainly Lakeview Commons, Campground by the Lake, Heavenly Village and the transit centers at both ends of town.
This spring the number of calls have increased, and officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police have responded. The main five locations the problems occurred at in 2016 remain the same so far in 2017.
South Lake Tahoe teachers show support for free and quality education for all students

South Lake Tahoe teachers joined in and greeted parents and students as they arrived for school Monday, displaying posters and letting students know they all had a right to quality and free public education, and asking all to take the pledge (as seen below).
Roadwork to cause delays on Kingsbury Grade for next two months
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/01/2017 - 5:41pmDirt and debris will be removed from the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade from May 1 to June 30, and the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is cautioning drivers that they may face delays from 5-minutes to 30-minutes.
NDOT contractor Q&D will be removing debris from eroded roadside slopes and drainages Mondays through Fridays, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Most travel delays are expected to average under five minutes.
The loose dirt and debris will be removed from 15 roadside slopes along the grade.
Final measurement of snow in Sierra shows water-rich snowpack at 190% of normal
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/01/2017 - 5:23pmMonday was the final manual snow survey at Phillips Station in the Sierra Nevada, and the snowpack is still measured at a healthy 190 percent of the May 1 long-term average of Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) which is 14.6 inches. Today's measurement was 27.8 inches.
The survey was conducted by the Department of Water Resources (DWR).
New CFO now on the job for Douglas County

“I look forward to continuing to build strong working relationships with the Department Heads, Elected Officials and other County Staff as we strive to develop and implement the strategic goals of the County,” said Moore.
Eric Church heads to the South Shore for two shows at outdoor arena
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/01/2017 - 4:33pmCountry music singer/songwriter Eric Church has announced the second half of his 2017 "Holdin' My Own" tour, and it begins on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe which he makes a stop at the Outdoor Concert Arena at Harveys on September 2 and 3.
Each show begins at 7:00 p.m.
Church's 62 stop tour has been thrilling audiences with three-hours of top music. It is unknown at this time what opening act(s), if any, will be with Church when he starts the final eight shows of 2017 in Lake Tahoe.
Ticketmaster will be selling tickets to the public on May 19.

California Boater Card soon to be required for Lake Tahoe and other waterways
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/01/2017 - 8:26amTo increase safety on not only Lake Tahoe, but on waterways across the state, operators of motorized vessels will soon be required to possess a California Boater Card. The first group to fall into this category, those 20 years of age or younger, must have a card by January 1, 2018 with other age groups added annually.
Those renting boats will not be required to get a card, nor will those in the state less than 60 days or holding a commercial fishing license.
Grading season begins in Lake Tahoe, but only if soil is ready

There is a slight chance of rain and thundershowers starting Thursday night to Saturday night.
Monday - Sunny, with a high near 66. Northeast wind around 5 mph.
Monday Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 32. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.
Tuesday - Sunny, with a high near 67. Northeast wind around 5 mph.
Tuesday Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 34. East wind around 5 mph.
South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue looks to City Council for new boat
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/30/2017 - 10:27pmWithout a boat since 2015, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) will ask City Council for $75,000 on Tuesday for the purchase of a used SAFE boat.
The former fire rescue boat, Marine 17, was taken off the lake (decommissioned) in 2015 after 15 years of service. Needed repairs amounted to more than the value of the boat. Since the SLTFR has borrowed Marine 2 which belongs to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).
