Submitted by admin on Wed, 06/08/2016 - 1:33pmThe South Lake Tahoe community pulled together behind Ryan Wallace in 2014 when he needed to buy a new prosthetic leg, which even at a discounted $25,000 was out of reach for the native man.
At the age of 19, Ryan had to have his leg amputated due to a rare form of bone cancer. The leg he received was wearing out after ten years, and the community helped Wallace buy the new one so he could walk and get back to coaching wrestling to the youth of the town.

Area seniors get free farmer's market check booklets

The El Dorado County Area Agency on Aging has a limited supply of Senior Farmers’ Market check booklets available for qualified El Dorado County seniors. Each eligible senior will receive one booklet that includes five checks redeemable for $4 each to be used at Certified Farmers’ Markets for the purchase of fresh, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, cut herbs and raw unprocessed honey.

50,477, or 46.11 percent of the voters, voted in the June 7, 2016 election.
Measures needed to pass by a majority:
Measure A passed by a 2,600 vote margin with 53.02 percent of the vote. The preamble of the County Charter will be changed to new wording.

Flea from chipmunk at Fallen Leaf Lake tests positive for plague

The flea was sampled from one of three rodents trapped in the Fallen Leaf Campground area during routine plague surveillance May 18, 2016.
Cub killed for forays into Sand Harbor
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/07/2016 - 6:18pmNevada Department of Wildlife officials killed a two-year-old bear after it made repeated forays into the Sand Harbor area of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park.
According to department spokesman Chris Healy the bear displayed troubling behavior that prompted officials to capture and euthanize it.
“It is a tough situation,” Healy said. “Outwardly it looked healthy but the behavior was troubling.”
According to NDOW, the bear entered the parking area at Sand Harbor late Thursday morning. It raided a cooler that was in the back of an open-top Jeep.
Sisters recognized for perfect attendance at South Lake Tahoe schools

Ryann, and eighth grader at South Tahoe Middle School, has missed just one day of school in her life, and that was one day in kindergarten so she has eight consecutive years of perfect attendance. Her sister, Morgan, a fifth grader at Tahoe Valley Elementary has had perfect attendance throughout her six-year (to-date) school career, including a year of transitional kindergarten.
Bill Cottrill promoted to General Manager of Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel

Cottrill, who has been with the property for 18 years, was promoted to general manager effective June 1 by the hotel’s ownership group Premier Hotel Collection.
Cottrill’s long tenure is not unusual for the hotel that enjoys a continuously low turnover rate year after year.

Bad air quality comes from numerous sources, such as car emissions, uncontained fires, and contributors to toxic runoff into the forest; these sources of pollution must be stopped.

The Action Adventure Expo will be partnering once again with the Hike for the Humane Society. Not only will there be guided hikes through Van Sickle Bi-State Park, but there will once again be a $5 vaccination clinic, and lots of vendor celebrating Lake Tahoe.

With the death of musical artist Prince of an opioid overdose, the stigma of the addiction to strong prescription pain pills has been erased. It isn't a poor person's problem, it isn't an unemployed person's problem, it isn't a metropolitan problem. It is a problem in South Lake Tahoe, Reno, the west and the whole country.

Two Reno teens die in single vehicle crash near Northstar
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/06/2016 - 1:51pmThe California Highway Patrol is continuing their investigation of a crash near Lake Tahoe on Friday night that has killed two teens from Reno. Two more are still hospitalized with major injuries.
According the the CHP, at about 8:30 p.m. June 3, a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 15-year-old Gregorio Martinez-Reyes made an unsafe turn and left State Route 267 near Northstar Drive, flipped an unknown number of times and came to rest in a field.
Opinion: Invasive clams should not be forgotten

Not only are the termites annoying, but they’re hard to get rid of and are slowly but surely destroying your home. Similarly, Asian clams and their expanding population are ruining a place that is home to many. Asian clams were not reacted to fast enough, resulting in some serious issues for Lake Tahoe, and old plans to eradicate them have not proven fully effective, so, new plans must be thought of and considered seriously to save the clarity of the lake and the economy of Tahoe.

After almost 40 years of supplying wine, cheese, gifts and deli options to an adoring public, owners Jim and Kim Warlow have decided to retire. They were originally planning to close last Fall, but when potential buyers started to look into purchasing the store on Al Tahoe Blvd., the Warlows decided to hold off closure.
Escrow is expected to close around July 1 Jim said. After that, he's looking forward to enjoying Lake Tahoe's year round recreation from the slopes to the bike trails.

Joining forces, the City of South Lake Tahoe and Lake Tahoe Historical Society have placed permanent posts in nine locations through the neighborhood, all in spots where history took place.
"History Lives Here!" was rolled out in the summer of 2015 as part of the City's 50th anniversary celebration. Now with the posters placed on permanent posts, the historical spots are not only fun to find, but easy to see.

Barton gets an "A" for patient safety

Forest thinning project resumes near Fallen Leaf Lake
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/03/2016 - 4:14pmThe South Shore Hazardous Fuels Reduction and Healthy Forest Restoration project on 10,000 acres near Fallen Leaf Lake has resumed.
Crews with the U.S. Forest Service will be mechanically removing whole trees off Fallen Leaf Road near the campground over the next several months and the area will be closed for public safety.
The goal of the project is to reduce the risk of severe wildfire and create healthier forests.
Attorney known for plethora of ADA lawsuits making rounds in South Lake Tahoe

Between 2009-11, Carmichael attorney Scott Johnson inundated small businesses with letters requesting they bring buildings in line with access laws for the disabled. He followed up the letters with several lawsuits in South Lake Tahoe.
STMS students rise to the Bike Week challenge

At South Tahoe Middle School, students rose to the occasion and came out in big numbers on their bikes each day.
Each participant received a raffle ticket for each day they rode to school. 15 students were drawn daily for a plethora of prizes including Amgen Tour of California shirts and hates, bike reflectors, bells and lights, gift bags and more.

Two arrested in nationwide casino credit scam

The defendants were arrested today at their residences in Georgia and Nevada.

This is our fourth year, and we've expanded," said Dreu Murin of Dreu Murin Productions.. "We searched all top bands in the area, Bay Area, Las Vegas and Sacramento. This is going to be exciting!"
Heavenly Village has added staging and lighting in order to create a more effective stage for the acts. If the crowds at the opening weekend are any measure, the move was a successful one.
260 teams coming through Tahoe as they run 178 miles in two day race

The event this year is 178 miles long, has 260 teams which split up 36 legs of the race, and they don't stop as the sun drops, they run all night long.

Three rescued from Lake Tahoe near Nevada Beach
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/02/2016 - 7:37pmThree men were plucked from Lake Tahoe on Monday afternoon after they crashed their jet ski near Nevada Beach. The teen and men, ages 13-31, were in the water for about 25 minutes and were all nearly hypothermic when rescued.
At 1:30 p.m., the crew of the newly launched Marine 7 of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office was on routine patrol when they noticed a jet ski stopped about 1/8 of a mile off shore. They heard a shout for help as the approached the jet ski.
After crashing the jet ski, the riders lost its key.

The department has looked at several options at this location and has identified a roundabout as the preferred alternative to address safety concerns and improve traffic flow.
