Dangerous signs placed around South Lake Tahoe that encourage feeding bears

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A dangerous message was distributed through South Lake Tahoe on January 3, giving the wrong message about bear safety and spreading the narrative that bears need to be fed through garbage and composting.

Local urbanized black bear expert Toogee Sielsch was informed of the flyers and spent two hours Wednesday morning removing them from the poles along US50 from Lodi Avenue to Wildwood Avenue.

For third meeting, South Lake Tahoe City Council to tackle cannabis ordinance changes

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council has a full agenda for its first meeting of 2024 on January 9, with part of it dedicated to proposed changes to the South Lake Tahoe cannabis ordinance.

At their meeting on August 8, 2023, current Mayor Pro Tem John Friedrich
requested that the issue of on-site consumption be brought back to the council for discussion. After the Planning Commission recommended the Council adopt the changes, the November 21 and December 12 City Council meetings both had an agenda item to discuss the changes.

New plans for historic Camp Richardson include $12 million in renovations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The historic Camp Richardson is about to enter a new era under a new concessionaire. For over 100 years, guests have been welcomed to the resort, and now ExplorUS will be assuming operations starting January 6.

With the recent closure of the popular lakefront Beacon restaurant at the resort, many wondered what would happen to the building. The restaurant will reopen in early 2024 with a full renovation planned for the building in the coming years.

Icy roads lead to car pileups and road closures on South Shore

On Wednesday, icy roads around Heavenly Valley Ski Resort caught drivers off guard, leading to one pileup on Tramway Drive off of Kingsbury Grade and crashes on Needle Peak and Keller roads in South Lake Tahoe.

There was a total of 16 cars involved in the Tramway Drive incident near Bonnie Dr. where vehicles coming down the hill all lost control and slid into the cars already stuck at the bottom. One of those vehicles involved was a Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) deputy. There were no injuries reported.

Athena Magdalene Roundy first baby born in 2024 at Barton Health

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first baby of the year born at Barton Health in South Lake Tahoe came at 4:30 p.m. on January 1. Athena Magdalene Roundy, a baby girl weighing 6 pounds, 12 ounces, and measuring 19 inches long, was born to Mackenzie Wagstaff and Kyle Roundy of Minden, Nev.

Dr. Clare Rudolph, board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist (OB/GYN) and Medical Director of Barton OB/GYN, oversaw the delivery at Barton Memorial Hospital’s Family Birthing Center.

Dive survey shows no stretch of Lake Tahoe's lakebed is free from plastic

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Plastic litter is a growing problem around the world, and new research shows that the bottom of Lake Tahoe is no exception. In one of the first studies to utilize scuba divers to collect litter from a lakebed, 673 plastic items were counted from just a small fraction of the lake.

In the study, published in the November issue of the journal Applied Spectroscopy, researchers from Desert Research Institute (DRI) and the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) teamed up with the nonprofit Clean Up the Lake to take a close look at the litter.

Winter Storm Warning for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada

UPDATE 11PM Thursday: Well, that didn't last long. NWS Reno has changed the situation to Winter Storm Warning. The warning is in effect from 7 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday. Expect heavy snow with accumulations of 5 to 10 inches for Lake Tahoe communities such as Truckee and South Lake Tahoe with 10 to 20 inches above 7000 feet, highest west of Highway 89. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph in lower elevations and 80 to 100 mph over Sierra Ridges. Wave heights on Lake Tahoe are expected to be 2 to 4 feet. 3-7" of snow during the day on Saturday, and another 3-7" during the night.

Strange smell around South Lake Tahoe this evening brings out fire, police, public works

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For over three hours Thursday evening, calls were going into the dispatch center from residents and businesses in South Lake Tahoe about the smell of gas.

South Lake Tahoe Fire was joined by South Lake Tahoe Police, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, South Lake Tahoe Public Works, Heavenly, and others to find the source of the gas smell.

So far, no source has been found.

Battalion Chief Al Martinez said the smell isn't like natural gas or propane, but smells more like burning oil.

Woman arrested for DUI after two collisions close down US50 west of Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - A 26-year-old woman from West Sacramento was arrested Thursday after allegedly causing two collisions while intoxicated on US50 near the 34 mile-marker in Kyburz.

At 10:25 a.m. on January 4, the report of a hit-and-run was made after a westbound 2004 Toyota Corolla sideswiped a Dodge Ram truck and left the scene. About three miles later, the Corolla was involved in a head-on collision with an eastbound Subaru.

The driver of the Corolla, Jennie Gomez, fled the scene and was caught a short distance away.

Heavenly Gondola closed indefinitely due to mechanical issue

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Heavenly Gondola is closed indefinitely due to a mechanical issue. Operations were shut down after the gondola maintenance team worked with the lift manufacturer and project engineer to diagnose the problem, which is related to one of the bearings in the high-speed shaft.

Letter; Heavenly needs to start charging sales tax on lift tickets

To the community: What would it take to get an initiative on the ballot asking the question: Shall there be a recreational tax on Heavenly lift tickets and Gondola tickets?"

Volunteers needed for Point-In-Time count of homeless in South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 2024 Point In Time (PIT) Count in El Dorado County is scheduled for Thursday, January 25. The count will take place on the Western Slope from 6:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m., and in the South Lake Tahoe Basin from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Volunteers are being recruited in both South Lake Tahoe and on the West Slope in the undertaking of counting those experiencing homelessness in the community.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care hires new executive director

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) Board of Directors has named Cathrine Mendez as the non-profit's new executive director.

Mendez joins LTWC with a background in wild animal-focused organizations, combined with a deep passion for creating working relationships with local organizations and promoting community-based educational programs. She will help to further advance the mission of the organization which celebrated its 45th anniversary last year.

Few issues with well-behaved New Year's Eve crowds at Stateline

Overall, the New Year's crowds on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe were well behaved and there were no major issues for law enforcement on either side of the state line with a total of 24 arrests by those agencies over the weekend.

Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley said the crowd at Stateline was bigger this year than in the past two years. He attributed that to the new Tahoe Blue Event Center show as well as the nice weather.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) Lt. Scott Crivelli said that even with a large number of people in town, the crowds were well-behaved.

Free pet vaccinations and microchipping at South Lake Tahoe office of Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe

The elusive mountain lion not always easy to catch on camera around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Toogee Sielsch of South Lake Tahoe normally spends his free time with the urbanized bears around the south shore, but his cameras placed in the wild often catch other native animals.

A photo found on one of those cameras this week showed something he hadn't been able to capture before, a mountain lion. These big cats live in the Lake Tahoe Basin, but their elusive behavior sometimes makes them seem non-existent.

Temporary restraining order to halt alleged ongoing fraud on consumers and banks

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The United States has successfully obtained a temporary restraining order against an alleged fraud network that steals money from consumers and uses deceptive tactics to conceal illicit activity from financial institutions, thereby allowing that illicit activity to continue, the U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.

The charges involve a South Lake Tahoe man.

Snowpack survey west of Lake Tahoe at 30% of average with 7.5" of snow; Statewide is 25%

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As anyone paying attention to the snow in the Sierra Nevada already knows, the snowpack is well below average. There has been a slow start to winter. In its first monthly snow course measurement of the year at Phillips Station on Tuesday, the Department of Water Resources (DWR) measured the snowpack at 30 percent of average with a snow depth of 7.5 inches. There is a snow-water equivalent of 3 inches.

Winter Weather Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Greater Lake Tahoe area starting Tuesday at 10 p.m. and lasting until 1 a.m. Thursday.

This system will be followed by another one this weekend.

Neither of the systems looks to be particularly strong, according to NWS Reno, but they are capable of producing travel impacts. The weekend storm is colder and appears to be the stronger of the two at this time.

Record crowd at New Year's Eve celebration at Heavenly Village

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Village's New Year's Eve celebration was big, with organizers estimating several thousand people took in the music and fireworks as they welcomed in 2024 to South Lake Tahoe.

The event featured an array of performances by bands Decades from Chico and from NBC’s The Voice, Kristen Brown.

As the clock hit 9 p.m. (midnight in New York), the fireworks display with the gondola coming down the mountain thrilled those watching.

Wandering bear dies after being clipped by vehicle on I-580 freeway in Carson City

CARSON CITY, Nev. - A bear that wandered onto the I-580 freeway near Fairview Drive in Carson City was struck and killed by a vehicle Sunday night.

The driver and passenger, a mother with her young son aboard, were not injured.

The collision was reported to dispatch at 8:47 p.m., December 31. Airbags were deployed. According to a Carson City Fire Department battalion chief, the vehicle clipped the bear on the passenger's side.

Two storms forecast for the first week of 2024 at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be dry conditions along with light winds to kick off 2024, but the week ahead could be very different. This upcoming week the pattern remains progressive with two storms projected to move through the Sierra and western Nevada. Be sure to monitor road conditions midweek as well as next weekend with snow in the forecast.

New California laws for 2024

Governor Gavin Newsom this year signed landmark legislation to support the reproductive rights of Californians, increase affordable housing, hold Big Oil accountable, and protect the safety, health, and well-being of all Californians.

“California is more than just a state of dreamers, we’re a state of doers," said Newsom. "Thanks to the Legislature’s strong partnership in 2023, the state is leading by example to create opportunity, and advance and protect the rights of all Californians.”

Local woman part of the USFS float in the Rose Parade

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When you turn on the television on New Year's Day to watch the 135th annual Rose Parade, you might just see a familiar face. Leona Allen will be walking with the U.S. Forest Service float celebrating Smokey Bear's 80th birthday.

Leona is a former Lake Tahoe Fire Academy instructor, current Lake Valley Fire Protection District Board Secretary, and is now on the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) fire patrol, when needed. One of her LTBMU supervisors put her name in for being a float participant, and she was selected.

Ringing in the new year on Lake Tahoe South Shore

US50 reopens after being closed for investigation

1:15PM Update: US50 has reopened. Earlier today there was a suspicious package left at the electronic sign at Twin Bridges and law enforcement closed the highway for an investigation. While the investigation continues, no explosive was found and the road is now open, free of controls.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - US 50 is currently closed from Meyers to Pollock Pines (Sly Park Road) due to a "police investigation." According to Caltrans, all cars must exit.

All agencies are involved, according to CHP Dispatch.

At this time it is unknown when the road will reopen.

January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Did you know human trafficking is often a crime that is hidden in plain sight and is only visible to those who know the signs and indicators? There are also many myths regarding trafficking, which is why educating ourselves is critical. Many believe traffickers are usually strangers to the victim when, in fact, that’s the most uncommon situation.

Current statistics show that around 42 percent of trafficking victims were brought into trafficking by a member of their own families, and 39 percent were recruited via an intimate partner or a marriage proposition.

Child Advocates of El Dorado County appoints new executive director

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) El Dorado County has announced the hiring of Natalie Moore as their new executive director after a rigorous search over the last three months.

Natalie joins CASA El Dorado with extensive experience in child welfare advocacy. With a law degree from Pacific Coast University, her background includes serving as court-appointed counsel for youth and families for the past five years.

CASA dedicates services to support, empower, and provide a voice for El Dorado County abused, neglected at-risk youth.

Clean Up The Lake removes 70,000 pounds of litter from Sierra Nevada lakes

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Clean Up The Lake (CUTL) has announced the successful completion of its 2023 Lake Tahoe-based projects. In just three and a half years, CUTL has achieved a monumental milestone by removing more than 70,000 pounds of litter from lakes in the Sierra Nevada, including over 35,000 pounds directly from Lake Tahoe.

Washoe County animal cruelty investigation leads to an arrest and seizure of 31 animals

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - An investigation into animal welfare concerns that began on October 16 has led to the arrest of a Reno woman on two felony counts of willful/malicious torture, maiming or killing an animal, and two misdemeanor counts of failing to provide food/water/air for a confined animal.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for the Sierra Nevada from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Saturday, though at this time it does not look like a big storm for those at lake level. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches above lake level, with up to 12 inches possible above the 7,500-foot level.
