Letter: Tahoe Douglas Neighborhood Group seeks signatures on petition to eliminate VHRs

We are a group of neighbors who want to ELIMINATE Douglas County VHRs. The name of our group is Tahoe Douglas Neighborhood Group. Our goal is to eliminate Douglas County VHRs in our residential zoned neighborhoods. We are gathering names on a petition titled “OPPOSITION TO VHRS IN RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS We the undersigned residents of Douglas Township want to eliminate vacation home rentals (VHRs) in residential neighborhoods. We find this commercial use of residential homes incompatible with the residential zoning and character of our neighborhoods.”

Living History with "George Whittell, Jr." at Valhalla

Registration open for Tahoe Grizzlies 8 and under team

City Council to tackle $136M budget during Tuesday's meeting

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Most of Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting will be a budget workshop, but first there is discussion and vote in their role as South Tahoe Redevelopment Successor Agency on a letter of intent to sell two surplus lots, 3900 and 3908 Lake Tahoe Boulevard. Between 7-11 and the National 9 Motel, these lots were part of the Loop Road route plans from the current highway to behind Raley's.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The lineup for this fall's Dancing With The Tahoe Stars has been released, and it is once again full of high-energy locals ready to raise funds for the Tahoe Arts Project. DCSO investigating third-party report that there would be a shooting at Douglas High Monday

Monday morning update: Douglas High School is opening today and there will be extra DCSO patrols around campus.

In a message to parents, DCSD Superintendent Keith Lewis said said the school's resource officers and DCSO Sheriff Dan Coverly are investigating a third-party report that an individual was told not to attend the first day of school due to a planned school shooting.

If students choose not to attend school due to this situation, their attendance will be excused.

"Highly likely" the body pulled from a submerged car is that of missing 16-year-old Kiely Rodni

MONDAY Update: During a joint press conference in Truckee Monday, law enforcement said it is likely the body found in Prosser Creek Reservoir is that of missing 16-year-old Kiely Rodni. An autopsy is being conducted on Tuesday.

The non-profit dive recovery team, Adventures With Purpose, said they found Rodni's submerged vehicle in 14 feet of water on Sunday, April 21.

Nevada County Sheriff Shannon Moon said they believe the body is that of Kiely, but they will wait for the autopsy to confirm identity.

Sunny, dry and warm week ahead for Lake Tahoe region

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Bright sunshine and hot afternoon temperatures are in the South Lake Tahoe forecast all week. Records aren't expected to be broken, but highs will be close. Typical afternoon breezes are expected through the week with mild overnight temperatures, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. The monsoonal moisture that was in the region over the past two weeks should stay to the east as high pressure moves in that direction.

Letter: Vote (somebody) for CalPERS Board

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) is the nation’s largest public employee pension fund. CalPERS is also the second largest purchaser of healthcare in the country. Only Medicare is larger. The fund manages nearly $500 billion in assets. It serves more than 2 million members and families.

From late August through late September, more than 650,000 retired CalPERS members will have the vitally important chance to vote for the one seat that they can directly elect to the Board.

Sales tax receipts in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County up for first quarter

The first quarter of the 2022 gross receipt tax report has been compiled for both South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County. For the City, gross receipts from January through March were 14 percent above the first sales period in 2021, mainly due to an increase in causal dining receipts. For the unincorporated area of El Dorado County, gross receipts during the same time period were 19 percent above the same three-month period in 2021.

Some dispersed camping sites along Blue Lakes Road to close during meadow restoration project

American Rivers, in partnership with the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Carson Ranger District, will start the first phase of the Faith Valley Meadow Restoration Project in mid-August. The project is in Alpine County near the junction of State Route 88 and 89 and adjacent to Blue Lakes Road. During this work, some popular dispersed camping sites along Blue Lakes Road will be closed as they will be used as staging areas for storage and equipment.

Ballot fills up for November election, 11 candidates running for South Lake Tahoe City Council

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The filing period is over for November's General Election, and not all open seats have candidates for them. The El Dorado County Election's Office will be sending out a notice to all districts without the minimum number of candidates running for office in the next week or so, giving those districts time to submit the names of those they want to fill the spot. Road Beat: 2023 Honda HR-V Review - An elevated compact experience

What is it?

Honda's HR-V is a compact crossover SUV from the Japanese manufacturer. The first-generation HR-V has sold tremendously well in the United States, being a top choice for those wanting to spend under $30,000 on an economical vehicle, but want to sit a little higher. In fact, HR-V literally means 'high-rider revolutionary vehicle.' While not quite a revolution in all sense of the word, the evolution that has occurred here elevates the HR-V to among the cream of the crop for small crossovers. It also buries Toyota's new Corolla Cross into oblivion.

City of South Lake Tahoe hires new airport manager

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The City of South Lake Tahoe has announced the appointment of John Dickinson to the position of Airport Manager, effective
August 1. Dickinson will be responsible for overseeing airport operations, administering the airport work plan, managing the fiscal operations of the airport, and providing recommendations for sustainable airport land use.

SR-89 in Alpine County expected to reopen by 6 p.m. Thursday

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Good news for the residents of Markleeville was announced during a special meeting Thursday - SR-89 should reopen by 6 p.m. on August 18. There will be one-way controlled traffic with a red light for the immediate future. It will be the same control light situation as what was in place prior to the mudflow and heavy rains on August 3.

Crews have placed native backfill material under the road, and the final structural finishes are happening Thursday morning which include two feet of an aggregate base with an 11-inch top of hot-mix asphalt.

Washoe Tribe partnering with Tahoe Forest Products to build lumber mill just east of Lake Tahoe

During the Lake Tahoe Summit on Tuesday, there was much discussion on tree thinning projects around the Lake Tahoe Basin that have, and will, protect the communities and lake from wildfire. Removal of trees is necessary to create a healthier forest, and besides creating burn piles, the other way to get them out of the Basin is by truck to a sawmill.

After minimal lumber operations in the Sierra for decades, mills started to close near the Lake Tahoe area, not making it economical to move cut Tahoe trees far distances. But that is about to change.

Dr. Charles Goldman honored with Dianne Feinstein Lake Tahoe Award

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The "Godfather of Limnology" Dr. Charles Goldman was honored with the Diane Feinstein Lake Tahoe Award on Tuesday during the 26th annual Lake Tahoe Summit.

The award honors “exemplary leaders with a proven track record of several decades of work to improve Lake Tahoe’s clarity, natural beauty, and overall environmental health.” Feinstein was the first to be awarded it during the 2021 Summit due to her dedication to the preservation of Lake Tahoe for decades.

Generation Green and Tahoe Care ambassadors recognized during Lake Tahoe Summit

SAND HARBOR, Nev. - Senator Jacky Rosen of Nevada, the host of Tuesday's Lake Tahoe Summit at Sand Harbor, recognized two Lake Tahoe youth-based service programs during the event.

Senator Rosen recognized the stewards of Lake Tahoe, Generation Green, and the Tahoe Fund Ambassadors, calling them up onto the stage to give them certificates of appreciation for their service.

"We want to recognize the leaders of the next generation, the leaders of tomorrow," said Senator Rosen.

Caltrans launches new push notification for QuickMap app - know about nearby road information

SACRAMENTO — Caltrans has launched a new push notification feature on its QuickMap app that allows drivers to automatically receive real-time notifications about nearby road closures, emergencies, and other traffic updates.

“With this new QuickMap upgrade, Californians now can receive instant traffic notifications based on their location,” said Caltrans Director Tony Tavares. “Drivers can use this information to adjust their plans when needed, compare route options, save time and travel safely to their destinations.”

Roseville resident dies in SR-89 crash north of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A collision on SR-89 north of D.L. Bliss State Park is under investigation after one person died from injuries suffered in the crash.

Helicopters working on new chairlifts at Heavenly and Northstar

As the ski season gets closer, progress is being made on chairlift upgrades on the Comstock lift at Northstar, and on the North Bowl chair at Heavenly.

Aerial work by helicopters recently occurred at both of the Vail Resorts.

Now that parts are in place, Heavenly crews have begun building the detachable four-person high-speed North Bowl chairlift. Concrete is expected to be poured via helicopter at the end of the month on the lift.

DCSO asks for public's help in identifying pair suspected of tool theft

STATELINE, Nev. – After exhausting all leads, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is asking for the public’s assistance to identify individuals involved in tool thefts in the Stateline casino area.

On July 27, 2022, at approximately 9:22 a.m., an unknown male and female stole a black backpack full of tools from a maintenance area of Harvey’s Casino.

The male was wearing a light grey t-shirt with grey shorts. The female was wearing a tan dress with a blue overshirt.

After the theft, the pair quickly left the area and walked into South Lake Tahoe.

Douglas County VHR Advisory Board meeting postponed

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Vacation Home Rental (VHR) Advisory Board meeting that was scheduled for August 17, 2022, at the Kahle Community Center has been postponed.

All items scheduled for that agenda will be moved to the next agenda for a meeting that has not yet been scheduled.

On the agenda was one item, to go over possible changes to the VHR ordinance including noise, fines, clustering, and how to handle parking, especially in condo/multi-family units.

Animal adoption crunch hits Lake Tahoe and Truckee: Humane Society holding special adoption day

Animal adoptions are on the decline just as the number of animals being turned into shelters is on the rise. According to Shelter Animals Count, a national database, there are six-percent more animals entering shelters than leaving. That’s a startling and scary number for thousands of homeless animals in need of help. The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has seen a downtick in foot traffic and community members coming in to adopt.

Spring Valley woman dies while swimming in Emerald Bay

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 46-year-old woman from Spring Valley, Calif. died on Sunday after swimming in Lake Tahoe's Emerald Bay.

First responders were called to the area at 4:57 p.m. on August 14. Two deputies with the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) assisted a woman who had gone into distress while swimming near Fannette Island. She was brought onboard the boat she'd been swimming from and CPR was started immediately by bystanders.
