D.L. Bliss State Park to remain closed through Summer 2024

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - California State Parks announced Monday that D.L. Bliss State Park in the Lake Tahoe Basin will remain temporarily closed through the summer of 2024. Contract work to replace aging waterlines at the park is ongoing and expected to be completed next year. The popular park has been closed since Fall 2022 and work will resume after the snow melts in the spring. It is anticipated to continue through summer 2024.

Gang member arrested Monday in South Lake Tahoe during "Operation Bear Trap"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – A known Sureno gang member, Jose Medina, was arrested on Chris Avenue in South Lake Tahoe Monday morning after a lengthy investigation into gang activity in the Lake Tahoe Basin, Northern Nevada, and Northern California.

The multi-year investigation called "Operation Bear Trap" was completed by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO), El Dorado DA’s Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Douglas County Sheriff’s and the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, and others. It has resulted in 76 arrests to date.

Free parking at Heavenly Village for Halloween event

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All kids are invited to the Heavenly Village on Halloween for a fun trick-or-treating event with 50 candy stops, a bounce house and slide, and a $1,000 costume contest on October 31 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Shops at Heavenly Village has partnered with the South Tahoe Chamber to provide the free event. South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue with their fire truck and South Lake Tahoe Police Department will also be there to hand out candy and stickers.

The City of South Lake Tahoe will be offering free parking in the Bellamy Parking Garage from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Widespread prescribed fires to continue at Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) is scheduled to continue fall-prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks at Lake Tahoe, conditions and weather permitting. California State Parks is scheduled to continue understory burning at Burton Creek and Sugar Pine Point state parks. California Tahoe Conservancy with assistance from Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District is scheduled to continue burning piles near Crystal Bay. North Tahoe Fire Protection District is scheduled to burn piles near Carnelian Bay.

George Whittell Chautauqua at Minden Mill Distilling

MINDEN, Nev. - The Accidental Conservationists will be at Minden Mill Distilling on Saturday, November 4 at 1 p.m. They are hosting a free one-hour Chautauqua performance of Lake Tahoe’s eccentric couple, George And Elia Whittell, the “Accidental Conservationists.” Local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff re-enact the characters of one of the wealthiest couples on the West Coast during the 1920s through 1950s.

The weather roller coaster continues at Lake Tahoe and the region

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Unseasonably cold conditions will stick around through Monday morning with breezy east winds over the Sierra crest tapering off Sunday evening. Lows in the teens are gone for now. A gradual warming trend will take hold over the region this week as high pressure builds back into the western US. Late in the week, we may see increasing breezes and shower potential that could linger into the weekend.

There are chances for some upper-elevation snow on Saturday according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is holding its annual Giant 3D Flake Making Class on November 13 and 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.

The class size is limited and reservations are required. The cost is $15 for Members and $20 for non-members. Additional patterns are available for $7 each.

Each participant will make one snowflake for themselves and one for the museum. Bring your favorite sharp scissors, and they provide the rest!

North Lake Tahoe project update for SR28

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of continued traffic-interfering work on State Route 28 (SR-28) between Kings Beach and Tahoe City along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.

Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, will continue to work on a gas line replacement project on Highway 28 between Tahoe City and Kings Beach.

Southwest Gas has received a grading exemption from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency for Q&D to continue earth-disturbing work beyond October 15. Work will continue as long as the weather allows.

Serial arson suspect arrested in El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) arrested a 27-year-old man this week on suspicion of starting multiple fires in both El Dorado and Amador counties.

On October 23, 2023, EDSO arrested Steven Saunders for a CAL FIRE-related warrant in El Dorado County for three fires that occurred in Pollock Pines in mid-September. Since the individual was taken into custody, he has been charged with two additional fires, totaling five fires between El Dorado and Amador counties.

Column: Spot Signs of Concussion

As school spins up and student-athletes are in the midst of fall sports, it’s important to be aware of signs and symptoms of a concussion/ mTBI (mild Traumatic Brain Injury).

A concussion is a type of TBI caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions can also occur from a blow to the body that causes the head to move rapidly back and forth, as in whiplash. Even what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious if it causes a concussion.

Latest mural in South Lake Tahoe completed at Hotel Azure

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another mural has been painted on a South Lake Tahoe building - this time on the side of Hotel Azure at the corner of Lake Tahoe and Rufus Allen boulevards.

Winterizing tips from South Tahoe Public Utility District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As temperatures drop below freezing, protecting your home plumbing from the damage and expense caused by frozen pipes is essential. South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) reminds homeowners to prepare for the chilly temps.

Before freezing temperatures set in:

• Turn off and drain irrigation systems.

• Disconnect and drain all outdoor hoses.

• Insulate exposed pipes or faucets.

• Seal holes and cracks in exterior walls, foundation, and around pipes.

National Runaway and Homeless Youth Prevention Month

November is National Runaway and Homeless Youth Prevention Month- a public awareness campaign designed to “shine a light” on the experiences of youth who have run away from home or are experiencing homelessness. Tahoe Youth & Family Services (TYFS) is proud to spearhead this campaign and offer resources to support vulnerable youth and their families in our community. National studies indicate that more than 4.2 million young people between the ages of 13 and 25 experience some form of homelessness in the United States each year.

Tahoe Fund matching donations to bring access to all in Tahoe Meadows near Mt. Rose

In Tahoe Meadows, off Mt. Rose Highway, there's a beautiful boardwalk trail that can only be reached by two sets of stairs.

That means those with physical disabilities, families with strollers, or anyone who has difficulty navigating stairs are unable to access the boardwalks and experience the wonders of these meadows.

The Tahoe Fund has partnered with the Tahoe Meadows Access Ramp Committee to raise $150,000 to build an accessibility ramp to the boardwalks, but we need your help.

NDOT close to finishing two-year project on SR28 and SR431

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and Q&D Construction have substantially completed a multi-year project to resurface and enhance sections of State Routes 28 and 431 to preserve pavement and protect Lake Tahoe.

Over the past two construction seasons, crews used approximately 41,500 tons of asphalt to repave and enhance approximately 14 miles of State Routes 28 and 431, centered around Incline Village.

NV Energy remains on a public safety outage management watch for the South Carson, Genoa and Glenbrook areas, based on weather conditions. A proactive outage may affect approximately 1,650 NV Energy customers beginning at approximately 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 25, lasting until approximately 9 a.m. on Thursday, October 26.

During a proactive outage – also known as a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) event – NV Energy will proactively de-energize power for customers in high-risk zones to help protect the community and environment from wildfires.

South Tahoe Middle School 7th grade girls basketball team ends season at 10-0

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Middle School (STMS) Girls’ 7th-grade basketball team, coached by Dave Finnegan and Tyler Pakes, went undefeated this season with a 10-0 record.

During the single elimination TAV-NEVA 7th grade Girl’s tournament, they also went undefeated with a 3-0 score competing against Whittell in the championship game.

LTUSD homeless and foster team holding drive for kids' winter supplies

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Homeless and Foster team is holding an Advocacy Winter Drive for their clients.

Winter is fast approaching and they are seeking all items related to keeping local kids warm and able to play in the snow. They do not need jackets at this time since they are already graciously provided by the local Kiwanis club and are offered to all students.

Turkey Trot Fun Run in South Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe Christmas tree permit sales begin November 6

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's that time of year again, the annual Christmas tree permit sale by the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU).

This year, tree permits begin being sold on Monday, Nov. 6, 2023. Permits will be sold in person only at the Forest Supervisor’s office in South Lake Tahoe at 35 College Drive. Permits cost $10 each (please bring cash only), with a limit of one permit per family or household.

85th annual Nevada Day Parade and celebration on Saturday

The Day of Days, the largest celebration of Nevada within the Silver State, returns for its 85th consecutive year on October 28, 2023, in Carson City.

This year, the theme is “Home Means Nevada,” courtesy of the beloved state song.

The fun begins at 8 a.m. on parade day with the ReMax Balloon Launch which will take place all the way from Fairview to downtown Carson Street.
