Stings and sweeps by the Contractors State License Board results in 142 legal actions, including South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/04/2022 - 10:54amA series of statewide stings and sweeps conducted by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) identified unlicensed activity in the California construction industry, putting consumers at risk.
During the three undercover sting and sweep operations in South Lake Tahoe, Salinas, and Redding, 142 legal actions were taken, primarily for unlicensed and uninsured practices.
From June 6 to 24, 2022, CSLB partnered with local law enforcement in those operations to target unlicensed contractors, with investigators contacting the suspects through their advertisements.

The Town of Truckee has just joined this group as the final partner for this year’s efforts led by Clean Up The Lake on Donner Lake.
Alpine County experiencing debris flows, road closures due to heavy rain in area
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/03/2022 - 5:07pmAugust 4 UPDATE: Due to large-scale rain events in Eastern Alpine County, the Alpine County Unified Command was notified by the California Department of Transportation that Highway 89 will be closed to all traffic from Turtle Rock Park to Markleeville until further notice. Access to Markleeville will be through Monitor Pass for residents. At this time, the County is asking all visitors to avoid the area.
Alpine County Unified Command is prepositioning public safety assets in Markleeville in anticipation of additional rain events and potential flooding.

Heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding of low-lying areas and debris flows in and near recent burn scars, mainly the Caldor, Numbers, Tamarack, Mountain View, Slink, and Boot fire areas. Also at risk are areas of steep terrain and poor drainage south of US-50.
Wildfire mitigation efforts bring helicopter operations to Fallen Leaf Lake area

Helicopter operations will be conducted between the Taylor Creek Snopark and the Fallen Leaf Lake Marina area, requiring the closure of Fallen Leaf Road between Tahoe Mountain Road and Lily Lake for periods between 7 a.m. and 12 p.m.
Please avoid the area during this time.

In that letter, Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), and Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) also raised concerns about recruiting and retaining senior leadership at the Forest Service for Lake Tahoe, the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU).

Over the past 12 years, many local individuals, families, organizations, and businesses have taken the opportunity to financially support a Monday dinner and send AAD crew volunteers to help the B&B volunteers with the meal’s setup, serving, and cleanup. EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services (OES) is holding a series of public presentations regarding the 2022 updates for the El Dorado County Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
A general overview of the plan will be presented and the public will have the opportunity to provide feedback at the Lake Tahoe Airport on Thursday, August 4 at 7 p.m. The airport is located at 1901 Lisa Maloff Way, South Lake Tahoe.
Fires break out in Douglas County as thunderstorm cell passes through
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/02/2022 - 4:08pm9 p.m. updates: Forward progress on the Lebo Fire was stopped this evening at 6:45 p.m. Units from East Fork Fire returned from the fire as water tenders stayed on the scene to assist units from BLM and USFS with mop-up. The final size is estimated to be 27.5 acres.
Down at the fire near Holbrook Junction, crews were able to knock it down quickly and it never grew much beyond .25 acres. Some crews are staying on the scene for mop-up.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For 20 years, between 1856 and 1876, the legendary Snowshoe Thompson delivered mail between Placerville and Genoa (and for a time, Virginia City). He did it by the Norweigan version of snowshoes, looking like very long cross-country skis. It took him three days on this eastward journey, two days back to Placerville, carrying on his back a 60-100 pound package of mail.
The U.S. Forest Service Taylor Creek Visitor's Center will host an evening with John "Snowshoe" Thompson on Friday, August 5 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in their Lake of the Sky amphitheater.

Local man spends hours treading water in Lake Tahoe before being rescued

At 8:17 p.m. on Friday, July 29, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue was called by the manager of Timber Cove Marina to assist with a water rescue on the lake. Tahoe Douglas Fire boat crews were also called to assist along with the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.
Herman Marty ~ 1943 - 2022

He was born on May 13, 1943, in the tiny mountain village of Alpthal, Switzerland. He emigrated to the United States in 1970 and found his life-long home in South Lake Tahoe until his passing.
As a carpenter, he built many homes in Lake Tahoe, including the one he lived in with his wife and two daughters. He also built homes in Carson City, San Francisco, and Oregon. Those who knew him will always remember his Swiss style of craftsmanship — everything had to be exact. He was the ultimate perfectionist.

Oak Fire at 67% containment, new McKinney Fire over 51,000 acres

There was no growth on the fire today. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity are expected to continue. There is a chance of rain and thunderstorms overnight. Damage inspections are nearly complete.
It now measures 19,244 acres and is 67 percent contained.

Stateline casinos "win" down 28.75% in June, Nevada up 8%
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/30/2022 - 9:30pmNevada’s non-restricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,277,068,155 for the month of June 2022, a gain of 8.06 percent over the same period in 2021. The South Shore Lake Tahoe casinos didn't fare as well as their "win" was down 28.75 percent over the same period with their gaming revenue of $22,218,554, according to the State's monthly gaming revenue report.
Last month's report showed over $17.5M in gaming revenue on the South Shore and $1.3B for the state of Nevada. The South Shore was down 13.69 percent when compared to the previous year in May.

The exhibit shows shallow habitat, deep water habitat, and living aquatic organisms that you might find in those underwater environments.
“This has been such an inspiring three-plus weeks of painting at the UC Davis Tahoe Science Center. I am so inspired to continue painting water. It has become an important topic in the West,” says Alexander.

NDOT stopping Lake Tahoe road projects during Hot August Nights

Beginning August 8, drivers can expect three work zones, and up to 30-minute delay times. Traffic control supervisors will be monitoring flow and delay times.
All work is weather and temperature permitting, and subject to change.

The report informs nonscientists about important factors affecting the health of Lake Tahoe and provides the scientific underpinnings for restoration and management decisions within the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The report summarizes data collected during 2021 in the context of the long-term record of research at Lake Tahoe. UC Davis researchers have continuously monitored the lake since 1968.
Closure Extended on Carson Road within US-50 Camino Safety Project
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/28/2022 - 9:15pmCAMINO – Caltrans District 3 and the El Dorado County Department of Transportation are notifying the traveling public that the closure of Carson Road within the ongoing US-50 Camino Safety Project is being extended due to a utility conflict.
Carson Road between Robindale Drive and Carson Court was scheduled to be closed from July 18 to July 29 but now is expected to remain closed for an additional seven days or longer after the discovery of a Comcast cable that was not relocated deep enough. The Comcast cable will need to be lowered as much as 3 feet.

Lisa was special.

In this hands-on restoration event, we will restoring recreational trails impacted by the Caldor Fire. This allows for safer enjoyment of Lake Tahoe’s outdoors, and prevents damage to wildlife habitat caused by people blazing their own paths. The more that we are inspired by the Lake Tahoe Basin, the more that we want to care for it. Space is limited, RSVP here today.

American Legion Post 795 in South Lake Tahoe accepting resumes for bartender/event manager

John “Skip” Steve, who has been the Legion’s manager and bartender for more than 14 years, has made the difficult decision to move in a different direction. The members of Post 795 are sad to see Skip leave, but wish him the best in his future, said Post Commander Tom Millham.
Nevada State Lands acquires over 10 acres in Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/27/2022 - 10:33pmLAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Nevada Division of State Lands (NDSL) has acquired 10.6 acres of land located in the upper Kingsbury area to ensure the long-term management and protection of natural habitat for native plant and wildlife species in Lake Tahoe, and to help reduce wildfire risks. This new conservation area was funded by Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) mitigation funds.

Wylder Hotel Hope Valley continues its Eastern Sierra history series, with an entertaining presentation, Tales Along El Camino Sierra, on Saturday, July 30. Using rare and seldom seen photographs, local historian and author David Woodruff recounts the impressive and fascinating efforts promoted by boosters in Eastern California and Western Nevada, to get a modern roadway (Highway 395) built in their region. From record-setting flights over Mt. Whitney to partnering with two World Fairs, the ballyhoo created by the Inyo Good Road Club was amusing, improbable, and effective.

Oak Fire at 18,824 acres and 36% contained

To date, 18,824 acres have burned and firefighters have been able to put a containment line around 36 percent of the time. Most of this line is on the southwestern end of the fire where most of the populated areas are located.
Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care announces Wildlife Wednesday events in August

LTWC team members will host a 1-hour presentation and Q&A at Lake Tahoe Wildlife's Tahoe Fund Outdoor Learning Center on Al Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe. This all-ages event is free, and donations are appreciated (suggested donation: $10 for an individual or $25 for a family).
18th annual Day in Paradise features duck races, live music, car show, food trucks

The South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club is holding the 18th annual Day in Paradise on Saturday, August 6 from noon to 7 p.m. at Tahoe Paradise Park.
Admission is free and there will be free kids' games, a car show, food trucks, live music, a beer garden, a silent auction, and the famous Duck Races.
Purchase duck race tickets at the event - one for $5, or a "six quack" for $20. First place is $300, second $200, and third $100. Businesses can get a business duck for a $100 donation.
