COVID-19 cases for South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There have been 198 new cases of COVID-19 and two new deaths recorded since yesterday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 20,056. This does not include at-home tests that may have been positive.

There are now 93.1 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the county.

TOCCATA performance of BRRRoque Masters cancels one performance

The Tahoe Symphony Orchestra & Chorus (TOCCATA) performance of BRRRoque Masters 2022 scheduled for St John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church in Glenbrook has been canceled. The cancelation comes due to due to new COVID mandadtes from the church. The orchestra would not fit into the sanctuary with six-feet distancing.

Nine acts booked so far for the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena in summer 2022

STATELINE, Nev. - Nine acts have committed so far to play at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys Tahoe this summer. Some are a rebooking of missed concerts due to the pandemic, others are on new tours. More concerts are expected to be added to the schedule

Dancing With The Tahoe Stars postponed to October due to current COVID surge

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In light of the current COVID-19 outbreak, Tahoe Arts Project has decided to postpone its popular fundraiser, Dancing with the Tahoe Stars. It has moved from March to October 15, 2022.

"We have made this decision for the health and safety of the community," the non-profit said in a statement.

LTUSD keeping an eye on COVID-related absences of staff and students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is keeping an eye on current cases of COVID-19 in the community, and the number of teachers and students who are out sick. Depending on those numbers, there is a chance the district will shift to virtual learning at all schools.

Alpine County moves to remote school and public meetings due to COVID-19 surge

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Alpine County Health Officer Dr. Richard Johnson has directed all public meetings in the county to move to a virtual format until further notice. He is also encouraging workplaces to conduct meetings remotely as well.

This morning four individuals tested positive for COVID-19 and they performed contact tracing and discovered that 40 percent of students and 48 percent of staff have been exposed at Diamond Valley Elementary School and the District office.

Prescribed fire operations scheduled for Lake Tahoe Basin

Weather and conditions permitting, the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) may conduct prescribed fire operations over the next two weeks at Lake Tahoe. Operations will continue throughout much of the winter season to help land managers reduce hazardous fuels that can feed unwanted wildfires. Smoke will be present.

Ten students make up South Lake Tahoe's community-based First Tech Challenge Robotics team

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The community-based First Tech Challenge Robotics team from South Lake Tahoe has been in Northern Nevada League events and currently rests in fifth in the 15-team league.

They competed in their first Northern Nevada League Meet on November 17 and placed 4th, followed by a fifth-place finish on December 8 at the Innevation Center's K-12 Robotics Center in Reno.

Their next event is coming up in Reno on January 19.

Lake Tahoe weather forecast: Dry and mostly sunny

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - High pressure with inversions and increased air stagnation will remain over the region through at least the middle of the week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. A weak disturbance will be possible late this week, but minimal chances for rain or snow. Temperatures will remain seasonable for the next few days, rising
to slightly above average mid to late week.

Ribbon cutting for new "Angel of Tahoe" building for the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been years in the making, but the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) is preparing to move into a brand new building in South Lake Tahoe. They held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday to celebrate the accomplishment in preparation for the kids being able to start moving in after furniture is in place in February.

Searchers recover body of missing skier Rory Angelotta

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. - Volunteers with the Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue Team and Nevada County Sheriff's Search & Rescue located the body of missing skier Rory Angelotta on Saturday morning at 10:42 a.m.

The sheriff's office said the 43-year-old was found approximately one-half mile from a residential neighborhood at Schaffer Mill Creek, north of Northstar Ski Resort where the Truckee resident went missing on Christmas Day.

TRPA to hold hearing on proposed Tahoe Keys aquatic weeds test

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) will host a public hearing on January 26 to decide on the next steps for the Tahoe Keys aquatic weeds test project.

This project is proposed by the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) will analyze which combination of treatment methods best protect Lake Tahoe by most effectively controlling aquatic weeds in the Tahoe Keys lagoons and halting their spread into the lake.

There have been 242 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths recorded since yesterday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 18,994.

There are now 63.6 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the county.

Guilty Christmas cancels last two shows

After surviving the snow, the power outages and rescheduling, Guilty Christmas has now been hit with the other big problem. One of our cast members has tested positive for COVID. So for the safety of all we are cancelling our last two performances January 7 and 8. Ticket holders will be refunded, but please have patience because Valhalla staff is down to one person. We are so sorry to have to cancel yet again, but we will try again next year.

Changes being discussed for South Lake Tahoe schools

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is considering some changes to operations and will be conducting public meetings in the next two weeks to get feedback from staff and parents.

Senate Bill 328 and newly instilled Education Code 46148 require the school day for the middle and high schools to begin no earlier than 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., respectively, effective no later than July 1, 2022.

Dog missing since Caldor Fire evacuations rescued from snowy South Lake Tahoe mountainside

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Russ is one lucky dog and he has a team of animal lovers and rescue experts in South Lake Tahoe to thank.

In August, Russ was in South Lake Tahoe with his owner who was in town for a temporary job when the three-year-old pit bull mix went missing. A lost dog report was made and given to Animal Control, but the whole town evacuated within two days due to the Caldor Fire and Russ's human had to leave without him. He returned home to Riverside County thinking he'd never see Russ again.

South Lake Tahoe seeing surge in COVID-19 - Testing sites keeping busy

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Cases of COVID-19 are surging across the country due to a spread during the holidays and the emergence of the new variant Omnicron. In the past seven days, El Dorado County has recorded 1,075 new cases of COVID-19, 250 of those in the Lake Tahoe region of the county.

419 Western Nevada College students make fall Dean’s List

Western Nevada College has announced that 419 students have been named to the Fall 2021 Dean’s List. For consideration for WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher. Each member of the Dean’s List will receive a congratulatory letter from Dr. J. Lake Wind Advisory and chance of rain/snow before a sunny weekend in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A quick storm brings a chance for light rain and snow Friday, mainly for northeast California and northwest Nevada, including the Lake Tahoe Basin, with gusty winds for many areas. High pressure returns over the weekend with tranquil weather persisting through at least the middle of next week.

A Lake Wind Advisory is in place for Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected with waves on the lake, 2 to 4 feet.

LTUSD not moving to remote learning at this time - COVID-19 testing for symptomatic staff and students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is experiencing a high volume of COVID-19 cases among staff and students, but schools have been able to operate safely and stay open.

At this time, LTUSD has no plans to shift to remote learning but they are prepared should staff shortages prevent them from operating schools. Currently, that move is not necessary as the current rate of staff shortages and student absences due to COVID-19 is not enough to close schools.

City of South Lake Tahoe snow blowing operation schedule

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe's snowplow drivers have been working 24/7 since the Christmas storm to remove snow from the city's roadways. The City has now shifted from snow plowing to snow blowing operations and they'll be working to reduce berms and widen the roadways as practical.

First baby of the year arrives in South Lake Tahoe at Barton Hospital

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first baby of the year in South Lake Tahoe arrived on Saturday, January 1 at 10:41 p.m. at Barton Memorial Hospital, just in time to start 2022 with parents Drew Norberg and Austin Norton of Incline Village.

The baby, Sloan Augustine Norton, is a second-generation Barton baby. His mother Drew was also born at Barton and his parents grew up in South Lake Tahoe.

Baby Sloan weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces, and measured 20.5 inches long, and joins big brother Winston Norton.

County moves forward on new roundabout at US50 and Pioneer Trail in Meyers

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors approved two items on Tuesday that move forward the continued planning of a new roundabout at the intersection of US-50 and Pioneer Trail in Meyers.

Officially named the Pioneer Trail/ U.S. Highway 50 Intersection Safety Improvement Roundabout Project, the supervisors adopted its California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Mitigated Negative Declaration by a unanimous vote.

Plans abandoned for 2022 Winter Wonderland in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Plans for a Winter Wonderland on the 56-acre area in the middle of South Lake Tahoe have been abandoned after the parties involved couldn't come to an agreement.

California still remains in drought after December storms, though less severe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Following a very wet and rather cold December across California, much drier (as well as warmer) weather is now expected in many parts of the state for the foreseeable future. A persistent ridge that had been anchored for weeks over the Gulf of Alaska shifts eastward toward the West Coast.

The record-breaking snow in the Sierra last week put the current snowpack at 202 percent above average for this time of year, and reservoirs in California surged with Folsom lake seeing almost 50 feet of added water, and 90 feet at Lake Oroville.

South Lake Tahoe homeowners can receive up to $10,000 for renting to locals

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lease to Locals, a new program in South Lake Tahoe, is a pilot incentive program that will connect property owners to locals seeking long-term rentals as the community faces a critical shortage of workforce housing.

Previously, the South Lake Tahoe City Council approved an agreement with Truckee-based Landing Locals to administer the program just as they have done in the town of Truckee. Landing Locals is a start-up company specializing in mountain-community workforce housing.

Power out to over 6200 customers in South Lake Tahoe

Tuesday morning update: There are still 290 South Lake Tahoe area customers without power this morning. The Liberty Utilities website says they expect those outages to be fixed this morning.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities is reporting 6,216 customers are without power Monday night in several different neighborhoods due to trees down and blown transformers. Wind gusts are forecast to be 55 mph tonight. The High Wind Advisory is in place until Tuesday at 7:00 a.m.

Broken water main sends estimated 650k gallons of water down hill, into Lake Tahoe homes

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - A team from Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) spent much of Sunday night pumping water out of homes after a water main broke, sending thousands of gallons of water down the hill from Zephyr Heights.

The main broke on North Martin after opening a six-inch lateral to the main pipe. An estimated 650,000 gallons of water were sent down the hill according to Fire Marshal Eric Guevin. It flowed from North Martin down US50 into Cedar Street and Lincoln Highway in Zephyr Cove.

587 new cases of COVID-19 for South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Cases of COVID-19 continue to surge not only across the country but in California and El Dorado County. There have been 587 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths recorded since Thursday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 18,294.

There are now 28.7 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the county.

Christmas Tree pickup during South Tahoe Refuse collection days

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe Refuse will be collecting Christmas trees during normal garbage collection days.

Christmas trees must be free of ornaments, tinsel, etc.

The trees can be put out for collection on normal service days or taken to the South Tahoe Refuse Resource Recovery Facility at no charge. The facility is located at 2121 Eloise Ave., South Lake Tahoe.

There is no deadline and green waste is collected curbside year-round.
