SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Health will be holding another drive-through vaccination clinic at Heavenly Mountain Resort on Friday, May 21. Those who received their first vaccination at the April 30 clinic should already have their appointments scheduled. Individuals in need of their first or second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine may receive it at this clinic. The clinic is held in partnership with the State of California and Vail Resorts.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is working to expand Social Emotional and Mental Health instruction this year and in future years, including adopting curriculum and resources.

Sexual health and healthy relationships is an important piece of the California Department of Education Health Education Framework. This year, LTUSD is looking at the adoption of curriculum for South Tahoe Middle School and South Tahoe High School to be implemented during the 2021-2022 school year.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Day of the Young Child will still be held this year but in a fun, drive-through format. On Saturday, May 22, the annual event will be held at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Every child from toddler age through school-age will receive an activity bag from Catalyst Community as they drive through the event with fun activities for school-age children. The following groups will have a set up along a special route for the kids to enjoy while they stay in their vehicles:

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to some logistical issues, the City of South Lake Tahoe is relocating its May 17 vaccine clinic. Originally scheduled for Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort, the clinic will now take place at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation center which was the scene of the previous fire department's clinic.

UPDATE 5.6.21: The City Council regularly scheduled meeting for Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at 5:30 p.m. has been canceled. A Special City Council meeting has been called for Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. The first item on the Agenda will be Closed Session which will last approximately one hour.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Mental Health Awareness Month is dedicated to building awareness, breaking down stigma, and providing resources for individuals and families. During the month of May, South Lake Tahoe government agencies, schools, and organizations will shed light on this issue, highlighting available pathways for support and encouraging involvement from community members and groups.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy has begun its annual seasonal dog closure at the Upper Truckee Marsh. From May 1 through July 31, dogs may not access the sensitive habitat at the Marsh to protect birds and other wildlife during their breeding season.

The Conservancy-owned Cove East property, west of the Upper Truckee River, remains open for year-round leashed dog access. Beginning August 1, leashed dogs may again enter the Upper Truckee Marsh.

Conservancy staff and California Highway Patrol officers monitor these areas for compliance.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After months of being closed, the pool at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center has reopened with a variety of pool programs available with more planned for the near future.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, Clean Tahoe is holding the first of two $5 Dump Days this year on Saturday, June 12 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The cost of $5 per vehicle load is for California residents. For Nevada residents, the cost is $10 per vehicle. U-Hauls and oversized trucks will be extra and priced by size.

All mattresses, box springs, televisions, computers, and is free. Refrigerators are $20.

The on-side document shredding is from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and provided by the Eagle Project. The limit is 3 boxes per household.

Snapshot Day is a citizen science water quality monitoring event that takes place every May with the goal of connecting the community with its watershed.

On the morning of Saturday, May 15, volunteers will fan out across the Truckee River Watershed to take water samples from creeks, streams, and smaller lakes, as well as Lake Tahoe itself, to get a snapshot of water quality in the Tahoe-Truckee watershed at a single moment in time.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - High pressure will build over the west coast with warming temperatures through mid-week. Pacific low pressure will bring increased winds Thursday and Friday along with cooler temperatures into next weekend, but precipitation chances are relatively slim, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Many Nevada schoolchildren will take part in organized events that promote walking or bicycling to school on Nevada Moves Week May 3-7. Nevada families and schoolchildren are encouraged to take part in safe walk or bicycle activities.

In its twelfth year, Nevada Moves promotes safe walking and biking to school, as well as other physical activity. Walking and other physical activities are planned for Carson City, Lyon, Douglas, and other school districts across the state.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After missing a year of shows due to the pandemic, Valhalla Tahoe is once again hosting a summer of entertainment on the Grand Lawn and in the Boathouse Theater. This year is the 25th anniversary of the old boathouse being preserved and recreated as a lakefront theater. Tickets are already on sale for this special summer treat.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board has unanimously approved a new transportation plan and policies that will do more to reduce reliance on the automobile and get projects on the ground than any previous plan. The plan has received broad support from Lake Tahoe transportation organizations, and more than 8.500 people participated throughout the process of its adoption.

May is both National Bike Month and National Bicycle Safety Month. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is encouraging drivers to slow down when passing bicyclists, and asking bicyclists to be visible, predictable, and safe on the road.

SLTPD will be conducting special traffic enforcement details throughout the month of May targeting vehicle and bicycle interactions in an effort to reduce collisions and injuries.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Join Scott Fitzgerrell and UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center Director Geoff Schladow as they lead a kayak expedition around Lake Tahoe in support of the Citizen Science Tahoe app June 21-27, 2021.

Paddlers will travel counterclockwise in 6-10 mile segments to circumnavigate the lake over seven days. ​You are welcome to join for as many days as you are able. Paddleboards and canoes are also welcome.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tamara Wallace announced today that she has submitted paperwork to the Secretary of State and El Dorado County Elections Department concerning her forming a committee to run for the County District 5 Supervisor seat. The second term of current Supervisor Sue Novasel runs until November 2022, the same date as Wallace's current term on the City Council expires.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif., - The Stella Van Dyke Johnson American Legion Post 795 in South Lake Tahoe has re-opened for business. Members and their guests are welcome once again and community events, including the annual Farmer’s Market, will resume this season. Post 795 has proudly served the Lake Tahoe community for 75 years but has struggled to survive during the COVID-19 pandemic as so many other small businesses have, and they are looking for help from the Lake Tahoe Community.
