With the first snow of the season hitting the Sierra earlier this month, now is as good a time as any to brush up on your winter driving skills. So whether you’re down in the valley or you plan to take a trek over the mountain passes across the Sierra, you need to know what you’re doing or else you could wind up somewhere waiting for the tow truck. While you don’t have to white knuckle drive through ice and snow, it’s a good idea to know what you’re getting into well ahead of the drive.
Consumers may get relief under new Nevada insurance law

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Consumers who have suffered an “extraordinary life event” may now ask their insurance company to provide an exception to the use of their credit information for underwriting and rating purposes, which may otherwise result in an increase in their premium rate.
“This is an important chance for some Nevadans who have suffered an unfortunate event to find relief during these trying economic times,” said Commissioner Scott J. Kipper of the Nevada Division of Insurance.

Each resort has its own claim to fame, and it really comes down to personal preference. If you ski more than a few days a year, the best bargain is to go for a season pass. Even if you are only skiing for a week, a season pass might be cheaper than buying a ticket each day.

CARSON CITY – A regulation eliminating a prohibition on carrying firearms in state parks has been approved by the Legislative Commission. The regulation still prohibits the discharge of a firearm in a state park with some limited exceptions, such as designated target shooting areas.

Another change in the skies over Lake Tahoe is in the forecast this week, the National Weather Service in Reno reports Sunday.
After a weekend of sunny blue skies and warm weather a cold front will move into the area late Monday giving way to cooler temperatures and a chance of snow in the Sierra on Tuesday. Later in the week, a colder and wetter system will move through the Lake Tahoe region, with possible periods of heavy snow, according to the weather service.

Mona Simpson, the sister of Steve Jobs, delivered this beautifully written eulogy about her brother, including his last spoken words, on Oct. 16, 2011 at a memorial service at the Memorial Church of Stanford University. It has been reprinted in Sunday's New York Times. Jobs was the co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Apple Inc. He died on Oct. 5, 2011 of pancreatic cancer.
