South Lake Tahoe leads the way as city council approves water bottle ban

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In 2016, the City of San Francisco was the first American municipality to ban the sales of water that comes in plastic bottles. At the time it was called a bold move that was building on a global movement to reduce the huge amount of waste from the billion-dollar plastic bottle industry.
South Lake Tahoe was an early adopter of the single-use plastic bag ban, as well as bans of single-use plastic, styrene, and straws.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The rain continues to help firefighters on the Mosquito Fire. It is currently 76,290 acres in size and the containment line is now around 47% of the fire.
Personnel on the fire now numbers 2,437 people. With the increase in containment and current fire conditions, several more evacuation orders were lifted by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office this afternoon. There are still 42 people evacuated. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There have been no burials at the Al Tahoe Pioneer Cemetery for 63 years and the public is invited to an informational session on Thursday, September 22 to learn about what is on the horizon for its restoration and improvement project.
Through collaborative efforts between the City of South Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Historical Society (LTHS), Daughters of the American Revolution South Lake Tahoe Chapter (DAR), Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra, and the Tahoe Conservancy, plans have been created to enhance public access to the cemetery which was created in 1866.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Arts Project (TAP) is celebrating its 36th year of bringing music and the arts to schools on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. To start off the season, they have brought a week of music from Hawaii into schools and will wrap it up with a public concert at Lake Tahoe Community College's Duke Theatre on Friday, September 23 at 6:30 p.m.
The musical group Kulāiwi will be stopping by local schools September 19-23 and wrapping up their week in Lake Tahoe with the community performance.

MEYERS, Calif. - There was a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for the new San Bernardino Avenue Class 1 Bike Path that will connect the North Upper Truckee neighborhood to Tahoe Paradise Park. The project includes a bridge crossing over the Upper Truckee River.

Over an inch of rain fell over the Mosquito Fire on Monday, helping firefighters with their efforts but creating a new problem - flooding and mudslides.
The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Sacramento has issued a Flash Flood Watch for the Mosquito Fire burn scar through midnight Tuesday, September 20. Ash and debris flows caused by heavy rain are possible.

The Mosquito Fire burning in El Dorado and Placer counties is now 39% contained and 76,290 acres in size. Over 3,700 personnel are currently assigned to the fire which has destroyed 78 homes and damaged another 13.

“It was nice for us to come and serve the community in a different way,” shared Cathy Deering and Dana Jasmine as they represented Barton Hospital pharmacy department at a recent Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD). “Rather than just through medicine at the hospital, we were able to help the community by sponsoring a Bread & Broth Monday Meal.”
In addition to Cathy and Dana, fellow pharmacy members Michelle Murphy, Hannah Sackett, and Kim Stoker joined the Bread & Broth (B&B) volunteers to serve a hot meal on Monday, September 9.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An early season storm is bringing much cooler conditions along with chances for rain and high elevation snow through Wednesday. These cooler and wetter conditions will help limit smoke impacts. The Lake Tahoe Basin saw unseasonably high temperatures in the 90s, then a week of 50s and 60s and rain, and once again the region will see dry and warmer conditions returning later in the week through next weekend.

Monday - Showers. High near 58. South wind around 5 mph. The chance of precipitation is 80%.

A large number of evacuees from the Mosquito Fire were allowed back home today. The fire now has a containment line around 38% of the fire, and it is 76,290 acres in size. 3,722 personnel remain assigned to the fire.
Evacuation orders were lifted with the significant increase in containment and tireless work by firefighters and cooperators to ensure that communities would be safe for repopulation. Both the Placer and El Dorado County Sheriff Offices downgraded many of the Evacuation Orders and Warnings in their perspective counties this afternoon.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Superintendent/President Jeff DeFranco gave the annual State of the College address this week where he highlighted the transformational changes on campus.
With the theme of "transformation," the school, staff, and administration are changing how they do business with the goal of remarkable outcomes.
DeFranco likened what the campus is undergoing to that of a butterfly and they are currently in the chrysalis stage. He said transformation isn't always easy but what happens in the next stage is epic.

This new event is an interpretive night tour through the Tallac Historic Site grounds and the Pope House, showing participants a new side of the grounds.

Fire crews made great progress on Saturday and overnight and were able to get a containment line around 34% of the Mosquito Fire. The fire has now burned 74,748 acres.
Colder temperatures, good humidity recovery, and precipitation arrived overnight with the forecasted storm system. Rain showers are expected to continue throughout the day and become heavier this evening and into
Monday. Southwest winds are predicted to become stronger midday with 24-28 mph gusts over the ridges. Higher humidity and temperatures in the 50s are expected for the fire area today.
Free community flu vaccine clinics in El Dorado County

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health Division will begin conducting no-cost community flu vaccination clinics starting on September 29, 2022, with additional clinics offered through October and into November. Seasonal influenza vaccine will be administered primarily in flu shot form, but a limited supply of FluMist® will be available for children and adults.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is highlighting the importance of properly securing children in the appropriate child passenger seat while traveling in a vehicle during Child Passenger Safety Week. They are also using this next week to promote their CHP Child Passenger Safety technicians who provide child safety seat inspections, education, and hands-on training for parents and caregivers. Free child safety seat inspections are available by appointment at any CHP area office, including South Lake Tahoe and Truckee (see here).

The wind on Saturday may have stirred up some smoke over the Mosquito Fire, but officials said it looked worse than it was. When the morning layer of smoke was blown out to the northeast, causing ventilation and the hot areas were fanned. The Mosquito Fire is 73,381 acres and 21% contained.
Even with the winds, crews made good headway with dozer and hand work along the eastern edge of the fire.
"It was an amazing piece of firefighting," said Operations Section Chief Dave Soldavini of the efforts at the southeast end of the fire.

STPUD starts easement project in Washoe State Park

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) is repairing easement roads in Washoe State Park to improve access to critical sewer infrastructure and jointly benefit recreational users. The project will occur on the trail south of Amacker Ranch, between the meadow and the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. Work is planned for September 26 through October 21, 2022.
Use caution around the work zone and seek alternate trails.

Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe on Saturday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Saturday, September 17 from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Expect southwest winds from 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. As a result, waves should be 2 to 4 feet.
Small boats, kayaks, and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
The three-day forecast for South Lake Tahoe:
Saturday - Sunny, with a high near 68. South wind 5 to 10 mph becoming southwest 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.

The Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) has announced a vacancy on its board after there were not enough candidates to file for the November elections.
The community served by the LVFPD is notifying the community they serve pursuant to Government Code §1780. The appointee will represent the community served by the Lake Valley Fire Protection District as a Board Director for a 4-year term beginning December 2022 and ending December 2026.

The Mosquito Fire has burned 69,908 acres and remains at 20% containment. Poor air quality is an issue Friday around Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Reno, and Carson City. Farmer's Market on Ski Run has been canceled, and schools in the Tahoe-Truckee School District are closed due to very unhealthy air.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two fun events in one venue this Saturday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Heavenly Village is the scene for the 2nd annual Fall Alefest and the annual Village Chicken Wing Cook-off.
Gun Barrel Tavern, Fire and Ice, Kalani's, The Loft, and last year's champion, California Burger, will be competing for who has the best wings. Douglas County and El Dorado County sheriff's offices will be competing to see who has the best law enforcement wings as well.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Food thrown away in California is a growing problem and there is nearly six million tons of food scraps or food waste tossed each year. This is about 18 percent of all materials that go into landfills according to CalRecycle.
In order for California to reach its goal of 75 percent source reduction, recycling, and composting, food waste must be addressed. Not only is redirecting organic waste the right, and needed thing to do, there is a law in California requiring local jurisdictions to implement organic waste recycling programs.

To all Douglas County residents. We have an online petition to help us protect you in the future from having Vacation Home Rentals (VHRs) in single-family homes in the middle of your residentially zoned neighborhoods.
In October the Douglas County Board of Commissioners will be meeting to determine the direction Douglas County will take with regards to how VHRs will be addressed within all of our neighborhoods. This is concerning because the board may vote sometime in the future, to expand VHRs into all of the communities in Douglas County, Nevada.

The Mosquito Fire was mapped Thursday morning at 64,159 acres and containment remains at 20% according to the morning fire operation briefing. Overnight, smoke settled back into drainages due to easing winds, with a majority of the fire area seeing good humidity recovery. Firefighters continued working throughout the night, patrolling, mopping up, and securing

2023 trial set for man prosecutors say is responsible for fatal Lake Tahoe crash

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Gardnerville resident Rafael Cortez was killed in a three-vehicle crash on March 7, 2021, and now the man prosecutors say is responsible is heading to trial. The 5:11 p.m. crash occurred on US-50 at Mile Marker 3, the curve between Marla Bay and Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe.

Brooke Laine invites community members and businesses to join her for an evening of fun, festivities, and conversations about her campaign for the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors District V on Thursday, Sept. 29 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The event will include appetizers and drinks on the patio of the Lake Tahoe Golf Course, followed by entertainment in the clubhouse by comedian Kat Simmons. Tickets are $75/per person.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - St. Theresa's Bread & Broth resumed its school year kids' program on Friday, September 9. The Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) weekend food bag program distributes bags of kid-friendly food to children in South Lake Tahoe.
These weekend food bags are distributed every Friday at all five K-8 schools in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUDS): Bijou Community School, Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School, Sierra House Elementary, Tahoe Valley Elementary, and South Tahoe Middle School.

South Lake Tahoe is experiencing good air quality for the second day in a row, while the Reno and Carson City areas are in the 'very unhealthy' range. The Washoe County School District canceled classes in the county in all areas except for Incline Village and Gerlach. Truckee is also experiencing poor air quality.

The Lake Tahoe Presbyterian Church is holding a community pet blessing Sunday, October 9 at 3 p.m. All pets must be leashed.
The free, family-friendly event includes:
• Mini–Trail Parade
• Family/Pet Photo
• Music of the Critters with DJ Chris Cromwell
• Pet-by-Pet Blessing with Pastor Bill
• Cold Drinks and Hot Dogs
