City of South Lake Tahoe takes next steps for "cleanup annexation"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council unanimously passed a motion Tuesday night for an ordination for the prezoning of 90 parcels that are currently in the El Dorado County boundaries. This was one step required of several, with more opportunities for the public to comment on the process in the coming months.

Lake Tahoe ski resort closing dates updated

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - March snowstorms have helped push the Sierra snowpack to just about average, allowing the ski resorts to keep operations open at several Lake Tahoe ski resorts. The 2022/23 season ended with the Central Sierra snowpack at 192 percent of normal, and as of today that total is 99 percent with more snow forecast before the end of the month. April 1 is the date normally used as the highest water content for the Sierra snowpack.
Kirkwood announced they will remain open until April 28, and Heavenly's last date is April 21. Sierra at Tahoe will also close on April 21.

The Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 2 celebrated its Administrators of the Year during a gathering at the Catta Verdera County Club in Lincoln.
This event spotlighted the dedication and achievements of educational leaders from ACSA's Region 2, which encompasses the Northern California counties of Butte, Colusa, El Dorado, Glenn, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sierra, Sutter, and Yuba. A 7-year-old Tahoe City athlete is heading to the USASA Nationals Snowboarding Championships from March 29-April 9, and he is fundraising to help with expenses including airfare, entry fees, hotel, rental car, and food.
"Leland the Falcon" Vogt is the son of Chuck Vogt, the founder of nonprofit fundraising events Skake The Lake, Boarding for Breast Cancer, and owner of Tahoe Longboards.

As spring returns to Lake Tahoe, a story of resilience and resurgence is also unfolding. It’s the migration of the Sandhill Cranes – magnificent birds that once upon a time had all but vanished from the Tahoe region.
“March is a big month for Sandhill Crane migration over and through the Tahoe Region, as thousands of nocturnally migrating cranes will pass overhead,” says Tahoe Institute of Natural Sciences (TINS) co-founder and executive director Will Richardson. “but more and more, these cranes are stopping to spend the summer here.”

Thanks to our generous community who donated to our event, sponsored the skiers & riders and bought countless raffle tickets, we hit our fundraising goal. After a fun day on the slopes with over 40 participants (a record in itself), we continued our holiday celebration back at the temple to be entertained with a wonderful Barbie-themed Purim Shpiel (a play that tells the story of Purim) written & directed by our temple member and theatre master, Pam Taylor. The actors were our religious school students who put on a magnificent performance.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Lake Tahoe from 2 p.m. Wednesday to 11 a.m. Thursday for areas above 7,000 feet.
Lake level is not included in this advisory.
Snow is forecast for the Tahoe Basin above 7000 feet with accumulations of 6 to 10 inches, locally up to 16 inches along the Sierra crest. Winds gusting as high as 90 mph along ridgelines.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Literacy at a young age is important, and studies show that children exposed to reading before preschool tend to develop larger vocabularies and are more likely to succeed during their formal education. If a child is not proficient in reading by 3rd grade, they are at a higher risk of not graduating from high school.
It is due to these studies that today's news can be a game changer for the 8,000 children living in El Dorado County.
Family of men attacked by mountain lion release updates on what happened, fundraising

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The family of the two young men involved in Saturday's mountain lion attack near Georgetown have released updated information. Taylen Robert Claude Brooks, 21, was killed, and his brother Wyatt Jay Charles Brooks, 18, was severely injured.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Other than a slight chance of showers over the Sierra and western Basin this afternoon, the first half of the week will feature dry conditions and gradual warming, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. The next storm arrives on Wednesday with periods of unsettled weather lasting through Easter weekend.
Liberty power outage in South Lake Tahoe

10PM Update: Over 500 customers of Liberty were without power for several hours Monday, with a handful still out at this hour. Liberty estimates all will be restored by 1:30 a.m.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A power outage was reported for a section of the South Shore Monday morning, just before 10 a.m. At this time, Liberty is reporting 3814 customers without electricity. It is affecting people from Elks Club to the Y in Meyers/South Lake Tahoe.
The cause of the unplanned outage is unknown at this time.
According to the Liberty outage map, the estimated restoral is by 2:30 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, and new student registration is now open for the 2024-2025 school year.
The first step is to complete the online pre-enrollment at https://laketahoe.asp.aeries.net/air, and on ltusd.org under the “Schools” tab, visit https://www.ltusd.org/schools/kindergarten_tk_registration_24_25 and see the list of what to do next. Please bring in the described paperwork to your zoned elementary school site to complete the registration process.

Tahoe Elite Cheer Team is now accepting sign-ups for the next cheerleading season. This is their second season, following up on their very successful inaugural competitions. Ages 4-18 are welcome and no experience is necessary.

There will be a cheer clinic on May 22 and 23 at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. followed by cheer camp May 29-30, also at the Recreation Center from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

On Thursday, March 14, 2024, Tom Millham was presented with the DAR Medal of Honor at the California State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) 116th Annual State Conference in San Ramon, Calif. During the formal opening night session, the California State Regent Sharon Maas presented Tom with the DAR Medal of Honor and Certificate in front of over 350 members of the California State Society, including National and State Officers of DAR.

Remembering Carol Mac Adam

Carol was born in Eugene (Lane County), Oregon, to Wayne Mac Adam and Mary (Sissler) Mac Adam on March 5, 1937. Carol’s identical twin sister, Eleanor Proctor, predeceased Carol in July, 2007, as did Jeanette Mac Adam, an older sister, who passed in 2019. Carol has one cousin, Phillip Sissler of Fossil, Oregon, with whom she remained close over the years.
Mountain lion kills man in El Dorado County, injures his brother

SUNDAY UPDATE: Per a spokesman for the family, the 18-year-old victim has undergone multiple surgeries for his injuries and is expected to make a full recovery. The family is grateful for the prayers and condolences from the community however wishes for privacy to process this tragic event.
Additionally, there have been multiple “Go Fund Me” accounts allegedly set up in support of the family. These accounts are not associated with the family or authorized by the family, according to EDSO.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County School Board (DCSB) held a special meeting on Thursday to correct their actions the previous week when there was a violation of the Open Meeting Law (OML).
During their March 13 meeting, new board member Yvonne Wagstaff made a motion Tuesday to select Jeanne Dwyer as superintendent, and the motion passed 5-0 with current Board President David Burns and Past President Susan Jansen abstaining.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With potential layoffs pending for eight teachers and two high school administrators in Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD), speculation has been circulating that the District is too "top heavy."
For a comparison, we have looked at the budgets for the 2017-18, 2020-21, and 2023-24 school years. For the same years, we also looked at the number of staff at the District level and school enrollment.

The greater Lake Tahoe area is an object lesson in what happens when excessive bureaucracy creates problems that they cannot solve alone. The barriers to affordable housing and a diverse economy are a choice made for us by local and state politicians, unelected bureaucrats at TRPA, and lawyers and activists behind nonprofits that repeatedly assure us we are but one tax, one regulation, one study, or one lawsuit away from an eco-nirvana. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The Club will be open for summer from June 24 to August 16 though they will be closed July 4-5 for the holiday. Lake Tahoe has protectors just about everywhere in this great nation. Last week, TRPA representatives joined a coalition of Lake Tahoe supporters in Washington D.C. to urge the extension of a key piece of legislation that has been pivotal in Lake Tahoe’s preservation. The Lake Tahoe Restoration Act is set to expire in September of this year, putting a major source of federal funding at risk.

City of South Lake Tahoe launches community survey

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe has initiated a resident survey to get input on government services and measure the quality of life in the community. The City plans to use the data in future strategic planning and priority setting. The survey allows more people to participate in shaping the future of South Lake Tahoe.
“We are excited to receive more input from the community on priorities. The survey will help us get a baseline understanding of our services and allow us to measure our impact going forward,” said City Manager Joe Irvin.
Spring weather is coming, and with it some very hungry bears - Keep Tahoe bears wild!

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – The snow will melt soon in the Lake Tahoe region and winter will give way to a busy spring for area wildlife. Bears that have been wintering in their dens will emerge soon and they will be hungry!
Letter: More South Lake Tahoe residents seek jobs elsewhere while staying here

Mr. Messina (in his Letter to the Editor on 3/19/24) believes that he has discovered "the cause of the current increase in complaints about housing availability" in South Lake Tahoe. What he has discovered is, that, lacking well-paying jobs in California, more and more South Lake Tahoe residents have sought work elsewhere while maintaining their residence here.
