UPDATED: Sad news to report today. KTVN-TV in Reno confirms that Channel 2 News Sports Director JK Metzker died this afternoon from injuries he suffered after being struck by a vehicle. The accident happened on North Virginia Street near 17th Street at 11:50pm last night following the University of Nevada Wolf Pack football game.

Heavenly Mountain Resort has announced that its new multi-million-dollar Tamarack Lodge received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. Tamarack Lodge is the first LEED-certified, on-mountain building at Lake Tahoe. It will serve as the blueprint for the construction of Northstar California's new on-mountain lodge and as a guide for future Vail Resorts development.

A number of companies who help clear the forest to prevent wild fires, have not gotten paid for the work they did this fire season, reports MyNews4.com and KRNV Channel 4 in Reno. A prescribed forest burn in the Angora fire area caused quite a stir earlier this month after wind gusts of up to 50 mph carried some of the burn slash piles and brush further than what was comfortable for nearby homeowners.
The U.S. Forest Service, however, says that at no point did the prescribed fire, which consisted mostly of slash piles and dead trees, get out of hand and the agency remains both cautious about its undertaking and empathetic to nearby neighbors who rebuilt their homes following the June 2007 Angora fire.

Voters on Tuesday approved Measure R and two new South Tahoe Public Utility directors. Measure R won approval by 70 percent. It expands the South Lake Tahoe Recreational Facilities Joint Powers Authority's use of Measure S funds to include the renovation of bike trails and makes improvements to ball fields. U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews are scheduled to resume prescribed fire operations on Kingsbury Grade near South Shore and on the West Shore near the Tahoe Heights area today, Wednesday, Nov. 9, weather permitting. Both project areas are small, approximately two acres. Operations may continue through the week.
Residents and visitors can expect to see smoke from these prescribed fire project areas. Smoke may be visible on Highway 207 on Kingsbury Grade and on Highway 89 on the West Shore.

Nevada casino winnings declined nearly 6 percent in September over 2010 figures, with South Shore Lake Tahoe down 14 percent, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reports. Carson Valley casinos, which include Carson City, saw a slight decline at 2.54 percent.
Statewide Nevada casinos report a 5.8 percent decrease compared to September 2010.

California is expected to see a boost in its local mountain economies as a result of a new legislation that now permits year-long recreation opportunities on U.S. Forest Service ski areas. The Ski Area Recreational Opportunity Enhancement Act of 2011, which was signed by President Barack Obama on Nov. 7, is estimated to create and annually sustain up to 600 extra jobs nationwide.
