Area fishing report through November 16

Here is this week's fishing report through Nov. 16 for lakes, rivers and streams in Nevada, Northern California, the Sierra and southern Oregon.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:

Surface temps at 55 degrees with clarity about 8.5 ft. With surface temps dropping fast, fish will be moving a little slower; also water clarity has been reduced. Time for attractors like dodgers and flashers.
If trolling is not your thing, then bait fishing on anchor is a good thing too and all the usual places will be holding fish. Brown Trout spawn has started and there will be a lot of eggs floating around the bottom, and that's where the fish are going to be.

CARSON RIVER, CALIF:
East Carson River: The fishing season for the East Carson River closes on November 15, upstream from Hangman’s Bridge.
West Carson River: The fishing season for the West Carson River closes on November 15.

CHETCO RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Boat and bank anglers are continuing to pick up some nice Chinook in the estuary. The Chinook run is just getting started and anglers will have more opportunity to catch Chinook when the river opens Nov. 5. 
Flows in the Chetco are low and anglers may want to keep an eye on the flow before heading to the river to float.  
Temporary regulations in effect beginning Aug. 1, 2011:
Mainstem Chetco River upstream of BPA Powerline crossing at river mile 2.2 is closed to all angling including trout through Nov. 4, 2011. Tributaries to the Chetco River remain open for trout through Oct. 31, 2011 as per Southwest Zone Regulations.

COMINS LAKE, WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
A few bass have been showing up, but no trout due to the pike infestation.
Pike fishing has also been poor.
There are few if any trout left in the lake also due to the pike infestation.

CONVICT LAKE, CALIF:
Jen Heintzelman of Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260) (www.convictlakeresort.com) reports:
Catch of the Week: Teri Demello and Tammy Lurcook from San Diego, CA brought in a 1 lb. 6 oz. tagged Alper's Trout worth $50 over Morrison's Bonus Derby Weekend.  Fish was caught near the inlet on Salmon Peach Power Bait.

Derby News:  There are 187 entrants in the Ambush at the Lake fishing derby and 30 fish 14" or longer registered into the drawing for $6,000 in resort prizes.  
Weather:
The weather is turning a bit cooler with a few flurries but we have a sold out resort this weekend and next to finish up the fishing season...people are out there fishing!  This next week is looking like mostly sunny and in the mid to high 50's through the week with the weekend looking a bit cooler.  Here is a local site that is usually quite accurate www.mammothweather.com.

Tactics/Bait:  Fish are being caught all around the lake on Night Crawlers and Salmon Peach Power Bait. People are limiting out on 1.5 to 2lb. fish and the big fish are really going deep. 
Trolling very deep with Needlefish or Thomas Bouyants at 6 or 7 colors...big fish are really deep. 
Locations to try are the Inlet, Outlet, North Shore, South Shore, Creek, Jetty, Handicap Pier and Hangman's Tree.  
Here is a list of other baits/lures that can be productive:
TroutKrilla, Trout Teasers, Midges, Panther Martin, Needlefish, Thomas Bouyants, Green Woolly Bugger, White Mini Jig and Power Bait. 

Stocking: DFG has stocked again this week.  

Sunrise - Sunset: Sunrise this week 7:24 am - 6:31 am and Sunset 5:55 pm - 4:49 pm.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions: Fair to Good. The algae is pretty much a non-issue.
Lake continues to drop and is down about 6 feet from high water point.
Cold nights are killing weeds quickly but still more weeds this time of year than I have ever seen.
Fishing Conditions: Good. Big fish are spread out so it is shopping for a spot by trial and error.
Small fish are everywhere including the 280,000 fingerlings just dumped in at the Fish Camp. With some more bigger Rainbows and Cutthroats scheduled before the end of the season the grand total will be over 500,000. 'Back to the good ol' days!
Leighton, Sandy and the west side of McGee are the prime target areas. Add just off the stream channel in 11 ft of water with some big ones in the mix. Stripping is working particularly well all over McGee. Mostly small guys but every once in awhile . . . Bam!
Six Bays is also starting to produce.
The fishing season for Crowley Lake closes on November 15.

FALL RIVER, CALIF:

Fall River has been fishing great! Cooler weather has triggered better hatches of Baetis and Caddis!
The weather forecast this week calls for some cloudy/rainy weather that could produce some epic hatches of BWOs and Mahoganies.
Fall River will close for the season on the 15th of this month, so go get it while it's hot.
Olive or black leech patterns will work if nothing else!

FREMONT LAKE, CALIF:
The fishing season for Fremont Lake closes on November 15.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Wiggin’s Trading Post at Chilcoot (530-993-4683) reports:
Snow is in the air and on the ground. Most of the high elevation lakes are snowed in now. Frenchman’s Lake is still accessible, there may be some ice on parts of the road where the sun doesn’t hit it, but for the most part you can still get around the lake.
Justin Kovanis of Stockton, California, Kelly Dack of Reno, Nevada, and Charles Blakeney of Chilcoot, caught their limits of rainbow trout trolling near the dam, using nightcrawlers/Ford Fenders.
Totaling about 15 pounds altogether.
Shore fishing has been good near Frenchman’s boat landing, Big Cove, and near the dam (on the east side of the dam).
Fishermen have been using nightcrawlers with marshmallows. Several have had good luck with rainbow Power Bait. Remember to be very careful driving up to the lake and dress appropriately for the cold weather. Share the road, people will be going in search of Christmas trees, so be cautious.
Fishing License for 2012 will be available on November 15.
The streams will be closed on the 15th of November.

FT. CHURCHILL COOLING PONDS, LYON COUNTY, NEV:

HAT CREEK, CALIF:

The fishing on Hat has been good! At this time of year, insect hatches are comprised of small green Mayflies (Baetis) and Midges with a few October Caddis.
Bottom line: Fishing # 16-18 Hogan's S&Ms, Zack's Olive Pseudo Mays, Mercer's Gidget and Olive Micro Mayflies in # 16-18 for rainbows, and in general small dries like Norman's Loop-Wing PMD or BWO.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:

Water Conditions: Great. Flows at 31 CFS as of 11/3.
Fishing Conditions: Good. Lot's of spawning fish up towards the ranch, but they're not eating much. Other fish that aren't spawning are hanging around for scraps.
Bold colors on these fish too. Still sticking to small Midges and Caddis. With the "wintry" weather coming our way this week, try some BWO patterns. Make your life easier and fish at the near bank. No reason to cast to the far bank when they're right at your feet!

JENKINSON LAKE, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF:
Grant – Gull – June – Silver Lakes and Rush Creek: The fishing season closes on November 15.

KIRMAN LAKE, CALIF:

KLAMATH RIVER, CALIF:

The Klamath is fishing great!
Expect to find numbers of 1/2 pounders and a few adult steelhead. Also be aware of all the juvenile salmon/steelhead smolt in the river below Iron Gate. Those little fish are aggressive and charge just about any fly pattern and can be a nuisance! 
November is the beginning of the steelhead season on this legendary river.

Fishing conditions: Great. Water is getting colder, and the fish are more active in the middle of the day especially now with the days getting shorter. Stripping streamers working best with a nymph trailer.

MARLETTE LAKE, CARSON CITY & WASHOE COUNTIES, NEV:

OREGON PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Recreational crabbing is closed in the ocean from Oct. 16 – Nov 30.
Fishing for bottomfish is open at all depths.
Anglers are reporting that bottomfishing has been spotty.
Anglers fishing from boats may no longer retain Cabezon because the quota of 15.8 metric tons will have been met.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:
Water Conditions: Good. As of 11/3 flows are stable at 74 CFS above Hot Creek confluence.
Fishing Conditions: Fair. Fishing might be a little tough with some windy days ahead of us.
Some fish are already pairing and nesting, so extreme caution should be taken not to disturb the spawners. Spawning trout have no interest in eating, as they are busy with other things, like producing more wild trout.  Please leave the spawners alone, and be careful where you wade.
There are plenty of resident trout and large non-spawners that follow the fish up to take advantage of the feast that the spawn brings on.  As the spawners make their beds, lots of bugs are displaced and feeding trout will stack below them in the deeper bend pools.
Owens River Gorge Water conditions: Great. Flow: 45 CFS. This is a permanent flow required to be maintained by LADWP. Water is clear and cold.
Fishing Conditions: Excellent.
Lower Owens River Water Conditions: Poor. Flows still raging at 596 cfs as of 11/3.
Fishing Conditions: Fair. Don't expect the flows to drop anytime soon. But when they do, the fishing should be excellent!
Fishing is challenging at best...Try to fish slower water on the inside of bends, high sticking whenever possible..

PINE VALLEY COMPLEX, HUMBOLDT COUNTY, NEV:

PIT RIVER, CALIF:

Pick this river if you are looking for solitude and good to great fishing.
Insect hatches at this time of year are comprised of small dark or tan Caddis, a few October Caddis and Mayflies that are # 16-18 and olive in color (that would be Baetis). Nymphing is always the dominant technique on the Pit; however, an orange Stimulator suspending a # 16-18 Pheasant Tail Nymph should break up the lively fishing with some different flavor!

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF:

This is the time of year when the king fishing on the Sac tapers off.
Down low, from Vierra’s to Sacramento, there will be sporadic squirts of bright fish over the next couple weeks, but it’s very much a hit or miss deal. Up around Colusa and through Hamilton City, guys fishing Kwikfish are starting to see some nice fresh Late Fall Kings, which are typically gorgeous chrome and cane top 40 pounds.
Higher up, the fish are pretty dang dark…

SACRAMENTO RIVER (LOWER), CALIF:

River flows are holding at 7,000 CFS. The Lower Sac is fishing great!
King Salmon are still populating select locations along the river, spawning, and laying eggs.
Hatches of Baetis and small # 18 Caddis are keeping the fishing predictable.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (UPPER), CALIF:

The Upper Sacramento River is fishing good! 
Anglers are finding rainbows eating October Caddis near sunset.
Late afternoons offer scattered hatches of Caddis (# 18 dark and # 18 tan).
Best chances for hook-ups through the day come to the anglers throwing dry-dropper rigs, or Caddis pupae Nymphs and various Mayfly Nymphs under indicators and/or employing the high-stick technique.

SILVER CREEK, CALIF:
The fishing season for Silver Creek closes on November 15.

SMITH RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
The Smith is open to striped bass year-round, two fish per 24 hours, 24-inch minimum size.
The Smith is now closed for trout fishing.
However, fall Chinook are starting to arrive and should provide some good fishing opportunity.
Adipose fin clipped Coho can be harvested in the Smith.

LAKE TAHOE:
Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbons Charters (530-544-6552) (www.blueribbonfishing.com) reports:
Mackinaw trout fishing has been very good, especially early mornings.
Trolling with Dodgers and minnows at the north end of the lake.
The Macks are running up to the 10-pound class.

TOPAZ LAKE:

TRINITY RIVER, CALIF:

River flows are 300 CFS.
Steelhead are moving through and there are reports of quite a few catches.
The hot flies are Red or Black Copper Johns, various egg patterns, # 6-10 TB Solitude Stones, # 12-16 Pheasant Tail Nymphs, Mercer's Psycho Prince in yellow, dirty pink or purple.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:

East Walker River Water Conditions: Good. Flows down to 43 CFS for last three days as of 11/3.
Fishing Conditions: Good. Flows are down almost as low as they're legally allowed to drop them. Good news, fishing is much easier when the flows are down this low, bad news is that it attracts lots of people. Still fishing mostly small midges and Baetis. Streamer bite should still be on in the mornings.
