Small fires break out near Vikingsholm, Upper Echo Lakes area

Fire crews responded to two fires this afternoon, one near the boat ramp at Vikingsholm and the other in the Upper Echo Lakes area. Both fires were reportedly small and didn't pose immediate hazard.
A Lake Valley Fire Protection District captain said that crews were sent to the Vikingsholm fire at around 3 this afternoon after a power line went down. The status of the fire was it was about a 10 foot by 10 foot fire and was reportedly knocked down.
The fire above Echo Lakes is in the Desolation Wilderness area was reportedly a campfire that got out of hand and was extinguished by a camper with the aid of fire crews, according to the Lake Valley Fire Protection District captain.

Wind gusts in the South Lake Tahoe area have ranged from 24 to 50 mph out of the southwest. The high gust recorded so far is 51 mph, according to weatherunderground.com The Lake Tahoe region and much of the Sierra remains under a red flag wind warning.
