Avalanche danger in Sierra, Lake Tahoe backcountry persists

The snowpack in and around Lake Tahoe is icy and hard right now and still considered dangerous, reports UnofficialNetworks.com. Despite the hard conditions a persistent weak layer continues to exist and the backcountry is still sketchy. The persistent weak layer is DEEP and the slab sliding on it is STRONG. Bad combo. For today, March 9, the avalanche advisory is set for Level 2, Moderate at both above and below treeline on NW-N-NE aspects on slopes 35 degrees and steeper due to ongoing deep slab instability. The possibility of large destructive human triggered avalanches remains in these areas. For all other areas, avalanche danger is LOW.
Go to the advisory page of Tahoe’s most reliable and professional Avalanche Resource, the Sierra Avalanche Center. Book mark their website and program their phone number into your phone and call it every time you head into the backcountry. (530) 587-3558.
