Major damage prevented after bird nest catches fire on roof

A South Lake Tahoe home suffered minor damage Thursday night after a bird nest on a roof vent caught on fire.
At 6:34 p.m. a call was made to 911 about a fire in the 1100 block of Tata Lane. Two nearby residents spotted a fire on the eaves of the home, broke ,down a back door and were able to get much of the fire out with a fire extinguisher according to Battalion Chief Tim Spencer of the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department.
A property manager stopped by the house Thursday to turn on a gas fireplace, heating up the home for tenants checking in Friday. When this happened the bird nest built on the appliance's roof vent caught on fire.
According to Spencer some siding and eaves were damaged, along with a broken window and glass door. One the fire was doused and the area deemed safe, the home was boarded up.
No birds were found in the nest, said Spencer.
