The Borges Family came by Sierra House Elementary School on Tuesday, May 29 to give our 3rd-5th graders a taste of Lake Tahoe History. We had an amazing presentation of Emerson (played by Kim Harris 775-220-0605 kim@westernhistoryalive.com ) as she taught us about the Pony Express; why it came to be, what it was like and why it only in operation for 18 months. We had Sarah Winnemucca (played by Evie Bouette ) teach us a Washoe Indian dance and some of their traditions. We were up and moving and learning! We also had a chance to visit with Jack, a beautiful Belgian Draft horse whose trainer Dale Penney helped us learn about horses and we actually were able to pet Jack!. Finally we were able to ride in a carriage behind Duke as Dwight Borges drove us around the school for a taste of what it was like to travel by horse and carriage.
The day was amazing!
Our Kindergarteners through 2nd graders had a “sleigh” ride around our school in December and they had a wonderful experience as well! Thank you to Dwight, Dianna, Kim Harris, Evie Bouette and Dale Penney for sharing some of our amazing local history with our students in a very REAL way! We had a great day! Thank you to our Sierra House PTA for helping provide this opportunity for us!
