SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you thought gas prices on the California side of Lake Tahoe were already high, they are about to go up again on July 1. Tax will now rise from 41.7 cents to 47.3 cents per gallon and is the second in a wave of gas tax increases.
The July 1 increase is part of the new annual adjustment to California's gas taxes.
In 2016, the state's tax on gas was 28 cents. It rose 12 cents per gallon in 2017 after the Legislature passed a 10-year tax and fee increase.
It is estimated that California roads and bridges need $130B to be brought up to good repair. The first tax increase of 2017 will raise $52B during the first 10 years it is in effect, leaving a shortfall of almost $78B. Funds raised will also go towards mass transit.
In 2018, California voters had a chance to repeal the gas tax increase but that effort failed.
