Smoky skies in Lake Tahoe Basin from Rough Fire
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/01/2015 - 12:32pm
The Rough Fire burning in the mountains east of Fresno, CA has consumed over 77,000 acres as of Wednesday morning, making it the largest active fire in the state of California.
Smoke from this large fire has made it way up to Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley, creating hazy skies along with a faint smell of smoke.
The National Weather Service in Reno says that the latest visible satellite imagery shows areas of smoke and haze from the Rough Fire being transported northward from light southerly flow aloft in place. Conditions should improve in the afternoon as our typical west winds with gusts of 25-30 mph develop and help disperse haze through the day.
The lightning caused fire has been burning since July 31.
The Rough Fire has burned in several jurisdictions: 47,907 acres are in the Sierra National Forest, 29,110 acres in the Sequoia National Forest, 207 acres on Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park and 62 acres of state responsibility.
