Pavement grinding project on Highway 50 over Echo Summit

A grinding and paving project on more than nine miles of U.S. Highway 50 in the Sierra started today, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced.

The pavement rehabilitation project, designed to extend the life of the roadway and improve ride quality, is from Strawberry over Echo Summit to just west of Johnson Pass Road. Grinding and paving will take place around the clock Monday through 7 p.m. Thursday of this week and again Monday through Thursday of next week under one-way traffic control. Motorists should plan ahead and allow for additional travel time.
Other work to be performed after the grinding and paving includes adding rumble strips and striping. Telfer Pavement Technologies was awarded the contract with a bid of $2.6 million.

Weather or unexpected events may delay or prolong the work. Caltrans advises motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert.” The department will issue traffic updates on Twitter @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3. For real-time traffic, click on Caltrans QuickMap at: http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/
